Wouldn't be surprised one bit.

I think studios do this as a marketing ploy to reassure customers and sponsors that seeing this movie or promoting this movie will not be a waste of time/money. 'We have confidence in this film, and so should you'. They can pull the plug later if need be and no one who matters will call them on it.

The movie could be good for all I know, it's just that studios are pretty trigger-happy announcing sequels these days despite being terrible at predicting their success.

So now the Star Trek 4th movie basically is just a "pitch" from Abrams that's floating out there... not a movie that's been green-lit or in any form of pre-production, as the media was led to believe and latch onto.

Not surprised at all. Die without honor.

I think they need to completely rethink what they want to do for Star Trek 14. I think they know they need to completely rethink what they want to do for Star Trek 14.

It might actually be one of those things where everybody can be happy. What do I mean? Imagine like a big Q movie, with Q trying to teach some final lesson to Picard, throwing him and the Enterprise E back to various times and places throughout Trek lore (hey, maybe dragging Captain Sisko along for the cause), finally to meet the Kelvin in the hours before the arrival of the Narada. Together Picard and George Kirk are able to repel the Narada. Timeline restored, Picard and crew all return to their future, finding it all better... and we get a more proper "goodbye" this time. Or we see the launch of the Enterprise-F with a new crew, maybe this one launched with a Temporal Drive so that Starfleet can be prepared for the next Nero much better.

It'd probably be better than what Abrams has in mind, but I'd prefer this to go the way of, say, the 2005 Catwoman movie. Omerta. We pretend it never happened, we never discuss it, and we go back to Real Star Trek. On the small screen.

The only part that would remotely make me sad about that is that it would leave Spock "Prime"'s fate kind of ignorable. As is, he at least had some sort of... uhm... new adventure.

I would have killed to get that "Star Trek Avengers" idea with Picard assembling Worf, Odo, Seven, the EMH Doctor, and a couple of other 24th century crew for one last blow-out adventure...

If they do go through with the idea of Kirk meeting his dad, I hope that it's not through time travel, but through a parallel universe; That Kirk meets a version of his dad who survived to the "present" in another reality.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. Star Trek can't compete with Star Wars on the big screen, and it shouldn't try to, either.

Looks like this is still on. I thought the box office performance of Beyond killed this movie.

So there will be both Tarantino and Abhrams from the look of that article. I was wondering if they would do one or the other, or make the current crew into an R rated Tarantino movie.

I remember when they were planning the 4th movie. They were gonna have Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as Kirk's Father.

More interested in the sequel with S.J. Clarkson at the helm than I am with the one Tarantino is penning.

We've seen what these movies look like when they're all glib and shiny, and those weren't great.

That never made it farther than a conversation. It was FAKE news to get people to go and see "Beyond" (it didn't work).

They have to make at least 6 movies with the new Trek cast.
