If anything, technology makes it easier for them to operate. It's totally feasible that these guys can make money over the internet and build stuff. They can watch youtube tutorials, all this wealth of knowledge at their finger tips.

As long as they do the franchise justice is all that matters. The 90s movie is untouchable and also a product of it's time.

The 2 newest movies sucked so bad. Not only were they bad TMNT movies, but they are some of the worst movies I have ever seen. (I couldn't even watch the second one all he way through) Utter trash.

It can be made to work but it's definitely more difficult and requires a different level of suspension of disbelief. Sure it would still have been impossible in the 80s/90s but it's easier to take in.

It's also why a show like X-Files can't work as well today as it did when it began or why Batman works better if we believe there isn't that much tecnology, BTAS while retconned into "modern" times had a sort of "timeless" feel because of the cars and clothing and whatnot that it felt it took place many decades before the 90s.

TMNT in the 80s vs modern times is not something I'll lose any sleep over, I'm just saying it's not because of "nostalgia", it's just a bit easier to get into.

Tech can cause pros and cons (easier to get caught) but they don't need to make too much of a thing out of that. It wouldn't bother me if it was 80s/90s but I don't need it to be, happy with new.

Arguably the more technology increases, the more this actually helps ninja sneak around NYC. Unless you believe ninjas would refuse to use anything other than feudal Japanese weapons and tools.

I think it'd be kind of neat to see ninja deploy little micro-EMP bursts that fry all nearby phones, stuff like that.

It's an interesting debate. I can see points for both sides.

If technology has anything to do with it, I'd also like to see the turtle's make their way out of the Sewer. I think it makes sense for them to start out there, but I think they'd try and figure something else out pretty quickly. I wonder what other location/home could be suitable, yet still iconic in some way.

Not sure it's a "old vs new" debate, but it could be.

Well in sci-fi heavy shows the more modern setting actually works better since the tech is more plausible.

TMNT being heavy sci-fi at times it works for it, the stuff donnie invents in the OT is far more crazy than when say 2k3 donnie did so in those cases it helps to have a more modern setting.

I voted for 80s/90s but I prefer to get a TMNT show set in modern times just to see how they adapt to it and change things.

There is just something very special about the 80s setting in turtles which makes it work. Its one of the reason why tmnt (1990) worked so well, it took full advantage of its setting.
The big problem I have there is that the filmmakers would be tempted like a lot of 80s set TV shows and movies to go overboard on the period references. This self-referentialism is both heavy handed and distracting. Setting it in present day means it can still be TMNT but without the endless references to today.

I think that's an issue that stems from the writers/directors/producers rather than the time period. You could have modern pop-culture references that get tiresome as well.

You can refer to popular culture of any time (as long as it has happened when it takes place).

Yes but 80s movies back then did keep putting blatant nostalgic references to the 80s in their movies. Most of those films weren't sold on nostalgia of the 70s for example. Self-referentialism is something from modern movie making and the problem is restraint. Selling a TV show or film on it's period setting feels somewhat shallow I feel.

Next Film As A Period Piece

CBR brought up the idea of the Ninja Turtles film being set during the time of TMNT's greatest heights. It would cash in on nostalgia and be able to take both elements of the '87 cartoon and Mirage's first volume just as the 1990 movie did and it will not have to force itself to adapt to whatever present instead take place in 1984. Would you like to see this and more importantly would it work?

Only thing is I kind of feel like doing that might be a bit too much like trying to redo the 1990 film in a way. Definitely one of those classics that should not be remade, be it intentional or not.

That aside... A period piece makes sense if it's touching on their earlier years, constructed in a way that clearly points out that we're purposely looking at the past, rather than trying to live there, so to speak. I wouldn't mind too much if it was like that. But as for just setting it in the 80s because that's when they started and when a the first generation fell in love with them, and just doing the whole thing over again... eh. Still tired of just rehashing, rebooting, and/or remaking it by twisting it all out of shape just to be "different."

I wouldn't mind looking at the past if it's also going to move forward to look toward their present and future. Lets say, a film that is part period piece that progresses to the modern day and weaves their past into their older present and how the past influences and affects who they are today?

There is so much freedom and space to work with to explore in their adult years that's just sitting there untouched because everyone just wants to play it "safe" and rehash the origin (because nostalgia and crash [edit: cash] grab)...but then screw that up too because they still want to do something different. If you want to do different, then be different and show us presently unknown events from a period of time in their 20s (or 30s, around their real world age)...then work up from there.

Zero benefit to making it a period piece. Only cons.

I don't think anyone would care. Adaptations of Frankenstein, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Don Quixote, Narnia, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and many others tend to be set in the time period the books were written. A new Casino Royale set in 1953 or a new TMNT in 1984 wouldn't be that strange.

Ask Vernon who did so in the 2014 film.

It would be interesting to see hits from 1984 thrown in and see how it would weave into a script be it Ghostbusters, Sunglasses At Night,When Doves Cry, Time After Time, Missing You, etc. Geraldine Ferraro references, the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev too.

The Turtles could have been raised on the film craze of the early to mid 70s' martial arts craze which would reference their '87 cartoon interest. Not to mention a lot of underground fight clubs that the Foot could recruit from and the punk thug movement of the late 70s' to early 90s' would fit too. Picasso was at the end of his life when the turtles were little in the early 70s' and could legitimize Splinter's interest in art. The more I think about it this needs to fleshed out more and it can work if done right. It would be different, but not different for the sake of it, but a possible benefit.
