While GG is all new tooling, this wave seems to have quite a lot of reuse potential; Warrior Metalhead Mike is already a reuse; Robo Bebop parts can make Robo Rocksteady in the next wave; Triceraton for Shogun Triceraton; GG can be repurposed for Seargent Bananas. Punk/Rock n' Roll Don can share some parts with Punk/Rock n' Roll Leo and so forth.

We should be arguing about the complete disrespect to Rat King, not about some gorilla.

But I also think it’s Sgt. Bananas. Dub edition.

They started out in the same place, like Ray from the cartoon and Ray Fillet/Man-Ray from Archie, but ended up as two different characters.

During the heyday of the toyline, everyone at Mirage was encouraged to come up with crazy mutants. A mutant gorilla was a concept that went as far back as the beginning when Laird sketched out a biker gorilla in the late 80s.

Steve Lavigne pitched a mutant military gorilla - Nelson Mandrella in the late 80s too.

Quote:
He was a mandrill monkey and Playmates thought the character was too agressive looking. Steve modified Nelson and changed it to Sgt Bananas. Eventually, the final character was a bit different than this sketch.
Meanwhile, Mirage was trying to pump out as much TMNT merch as they could - so Stephen Murphy and Steve Lavigne took their Guerrilla Gorilla concept and threw him into a random issue of TMNT Magazine.

Characters got renamed all the time for one reason or another with TMNT. Groundchuck would have been "Bullseye" but they couldn't clear the trademark.

I don’t mind Super7 doing characters that weren’t in the original toy line and I mostly hope they do more so we can have some Archie Characters that fit in with the Playmates characters. The only thing that I would say is while Guerilla Gorilla looks pretty awesome, I think his face and general smooth design makes him stand out among the other Ultimates. Like he doesn’t match necessarily. He still looks awesome I just don’t know how well he gels. The weapons all look amazing. The open mouth face could probably work better. the group shot should have used it.

I just realized that they've stopped including dupe unpainted accessories on weapons racks

That’s a shame. Even though I never use them I thought they got pretty creative in wave 5 and 6.

Yeah, it was a nice nod to the original product. I actually would have been fine if they'd retained the rack and left out the dupe weapons, too.

Maybe it's a cost-cutting measure and they felt it was the most superfluous thing they could cut.

That Metalhead is incredibly underwhelming. I mean, for a collector what's the point? TMNT fandom was in a rapid downward spiral when that figure came out. I had it, and I thought it was cool at the time, but it was for most people an afterthought now I don't quite understand what the appeal would be for most people.

Punker Don looks great. I'll definitely collect the music TMNT, which are my all-time favorite figures, but the rest of this wave doesn't hold much appeal.

I mean you guys go ahead and measure bananas all day over whether this gorilla in a helmet and camo and banana weapons is the same as that gorilla in a helmet and camo with banana weapons.

Fact of the matter is, it's meant to fill the same spot in the lineup and your girlfriend won't know the difference. Mine anyway, not sure if you have one.

*tongue in cheek post*

PS - I'm not all in on this line, in fact I only have 1 so far (and 2 others) on preorder... but I do think I want that metalhead mike. If it's as shiny as the originals, or shinier, it will be pretty cool to ogle I think. (And then I might just stop ogling your girlfriend...we both win)

Punker Don is my first purchase from Super 7, woohoo! Well, my shorty treated me, really. I want Muckman a lot, too, but Punker Don is probably my all time favorite TMNT toy. That's a must have, they killed it!

Really surprised about the Guerilla Gorilla deep cut, super curious what made them go with the original interpretation over the Playmates release Sgt. Bananas. Very cool, though. Obscure is always good in my book.

Well, this is definitely the wave that nobody even came close to predicting

Positives first, as toys these all look fantastic. And that Triceraton is incredible and an instant pre-order for me.

That said, this is a weak wave. I know the vintage line was variant heavy, but 3 in a wave feels too much to me, even allowing for the extra fifth figure slot. I don’t want to complain as it saves me money but it is certainly an interesting choice on Super 7’s part.

And speaking of interesting choices, Guerrilla Gorilla came out of no where! I’ve been eagerly anticipating the first new figure, but I can safely say this is not what I had in mind! The missing frogs and mutanimals? Definitely. Ninjara? Sure. Karai? Absolutely. Savanti Romero? Yes, Choate/Shoate needs Savanti! But Guerrilla Gorilla? I totally respect the deep cut (and again, as a toy he looks great), but how many lifelong fans have even heard of him without googling? A character this obscure and carrying a higher price tag, I really hope they don’t use him to gauge the demand for new characters in vintage style.

This is a brave wave, and it should certainly show them how deep fans are prepared to go I just hope going this obscure/variant heavy it doesn’t backfire on them.

I'm skeptical of the name Guerrilla Gorilla being necessitated because of a rights issue, as KidRobot released a Sergeant Bananas figure in 2017.

This was the most odd wave so far. Not really hyped for any of these figures. Triceraton looks awesome, and Guerilla Gorilla is cool I suppose, but the rest are kind of disappointing choices for me. Why go for Robotic Bebop when you've still got the likes of Rat King, Chrome Dome or even Traag to choose from? Metalhead Mikey feels like such a cheap shot, he's simply a re-paint of the Metalhead mold. He's cool of course, but he comes way too soon. Happy for all the Punker Don fans but I would much rather have them complete the Disguised Turtles series before going for the Rocker Turtles.

I've been waiting for an excuse to grab one of the S7 figures... and in the Triceraton I finally have that. Admittedly I also dig the Metalhead Mikey, if only because I passed on the S7 Metalhead in favor of the NECA Metalhead but could justify the overlap with this new deco. Punker Don kinda appeals, too, but I think it's an "admire from afar" sort of thing.

I do not understand the choice of Guerrilla Gorilla at all, but I'm glad dreams come true for everyone excited for him.

Hmm. I agree with most of your points but I don’t think it is a weak wave. Quite frankly, going by the group shot, this is probably the most visually appealing wave. The rock and roll turtles were the cream of the crop in terms of variants (only a samurai or cyber samurai wave can top it). Metal Mike looks way better than vanilla Metal Head. Robo B&R, as vintage figures, were some great latter additions to the line. And, there’s no shortage of praise for the vintage Triceraton (and similar to Slash, this upscaled rendition). I think the main issue is that these characters cut in line over say, Rat King, Genghis or Traag. Folks have limited budget, want to get the core cast, and call it a day.
