Just quickly browsing the thread, is Mushu in this or not? Looked liked he was then might not be.
Anyway, preview looks ok. |

I got chills watching the teaser trailer.
Also, it’s understandable why Mushu, Li Shang and other things won’t be in this remake. https://twitter.com/imwonwoo1796/sta...394914304?s=21 Quote:

Disney had a knack for 'dressing up' the animated movies than what was described in the original versions of the very stories & legends that... had other variations told as well.
Some of the original stories were rather dark. Supposedly Ariel from The Little Mermaid committed suicide. Each of the stepsisters in Cinderella, had their foot bones broken and toes severed, just so they could wear the glass slipper. If there are people that would prefer the original tales, that's great. But slamming a movie for a talking dragon, a love interest, and for the defeat of a Hun invasion, is rather silly. |

Ooh! I really like this trailer. Interest tentatively renewed. Based on what is shown I think that this new Mulan movie is going for the more poem accurate depiction of Mulan being good at martial arts before she even goes to take her father's place in the army and is already proficient in that area. In the original poem Mulan was proficient in both traditional womanly arts as well as martial arts and liked them both. She didn't have disdain for either, and fought in the war because she saw it as her duty to her country and her family. So I am a little worried that she seems upset that she is going to get married. But I love how when the match maker is talking about the qualities that make a good wife: quite, composed, graceful, disciplined, are juxtaposed that those qualities are what makes a good warrior. That's how you show off theme in a trailer. I hope that there is some exquisite martial arts in this that rival Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon movie. Depending on how they handle this I might be able to overlook the exclusion of Shang (even though I still irked by it).

Mushu I can live without, but no Shang? Aw, come on.
I mean, they don't have to end up together ; maybe just make him a supporting character. (Though Mulan was always that awesome rare one where she wins the guy, instead of visa versa. That was always kinda nice.) Out of all these live action remakes though that haven't really been catching my interest all that much (heck not even Lion King...), Mulan is probably the one I've been a bit curious about. Maybe its story is just more suited to impress in live action, and perhaps has the potential to be a more down to earth "Wonder Woman," to so speak; a movie with an ass kicking girl. |

I like this as a template for the live action Disney stuff. Scrap out the song and dance stuff, scrap out the goofier elements, and try and make it "realistic" while still more or less hitting the same story beats as the animated version. That kind of justifies the live action versions better to me.

I wonder if the naked bathing at the river scene is still in the movie.

I'm glad that Disney is faithfully following the source material. They need to be as culturally accurate as possible, and they need to avoid offending/upsetting it's intended audience. ( In other words, it should pay tribute/respect to the culture/history of China. )
May this film be a lesson to future studios; I hope it is successful in its endeavors. .... and, it looks like I may have spoken too soon .... Last edited by Papenbrook; 07-12-2019 at 08:43 PM. |

So this is less a remake of the Disney film and more based on the actual legend?

Yes, but I think less because they actually wanted to do that and more that because doing Mulan the way the animated movie did now might invite a whole lot of cultural backlash from SJWs. Still, I'm interested in what they come up with.
