Warner Brothers pushing all 2021 movies to HBO Max and Theaters Same day in 2021

Huge news out of Warner Bros. today. Following the announcement that the highly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 will be released on HBO Max on Christmas Day for a limited one-month engagement on the streaming service (in addition to a concurrent theatrical release where theaters are open), the studio announced today that all of its 2021 films will follow this same release model.

Yes indeed, movies like Dune, Matrix 4, and Godzilla vs. Kong will be released theatrically worldwide, but concurrent with the domestic theatrical release the movies will also be streaming exclusively on HBO Max for one month. After that one month period is over, the film will depart HBO Max and continue to be available in theaters worldwide, at which time it will follow all customary distribution windows applying to the title – which means after it leaves HBO Max, it will later still have a full Digital HD and Blu-ray/DVD release before eventually returning to the streamer.

The 2021 Warner Bros. films that are expected to be released next year – and that are expected to follow this “on HBO Max and in theaters at the same time” model – include:

Those Who Wish Me Dead
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

All films will be available in 4K Ultra HD and HDR on HBO Max.

This hybrid model was created as a strategic response to the impact of the ongoing global pandemic.

It's an aggressive move that Disney is doing pretty much the same thing since they don't want to support a dying model and get covid attendance dollars if instead they can push streaming and compete with Netflix which is a HUGE company, not sure some of you realize how much the company is worth. These aggressive pushes are being done because they're already late to the party and want to make sure they stay in the game in the long term.

I'd say that people would still need to leave the house to ever successfully have sex or even just attract a woman, but f*ck, look at the group of people I'm talking to. The closest they'd ever get to attracting a mate would be "roofie-ing the Door Dash lady" so of course they've got no interest in a social life.

Every now and then my wife reads something over my shoulder, rolls her eyes and says something to the effect of, "You really need to quit with these (slur against the intellectually-challenged which is no longer socially acceptable)." Literally today, in fact.

Then I remind her that she's a grown-ass woman who willingly engages in conversation with people on fan pages for people like Marilyn Manson and therefore can't really say much about it. And that usually puts the issue to bed at least for a little while.

She's 100% right on principle, though. I just can't stand being told what to do.

The universe is getting rebooted anyway. It's more or less confirmed with Flashpoint. Synder's Justice League mini-series is just the send off to it, not that the actor are going to continue on. Gal Gadot may get a third film but that's it.

The fact that we already have a new Batman movie series coming out says enough in itself.

I am fortunate enough to live in Texas where theaters are open, so I can go see these on the big screen if I want to. However, this really isn't much of a win-win situation. While it is true that theaters will be playing these movies, they will now have to compete with HBO Max to attract audiences into watching Warner Bros. films. Movie theater stocks took quite a plunge today following this news.
