Well the could have at least eased us into some more interesting concepts. This movie seemed to be more about the importance of individuality and identity, whereas the original was almost the opposite. There have been more than enough movies about individuality.

I hate how people are saying that the whitewashing is what made this movie bomb, people are so self-entitled and full of themselves. It failed because people weren't interested, haven't seen it and likely won't for a while but I think I'll enjoy it.

What could've made it be a success is if it had been a rated R movie. Here it is just another superhero movie without the characters people love. If they had marketed it as this R rated japanese adaptation that inspired The Matrix or whatever they could've drawn an older crowd who would've seen it just because it was cool.

Yeah, that's pretty moronic. It would also be funny to take those people into a time machine, go back in time, make the studio cast a full Japanese cast, then time travel back to the present to see how vastly worse it would have bombed.

Precisely. Like I said, this could have easily been the next Matrix... now it'll just be remembered (if it'll even be remembered at all) as some random, kiddified anime adaptation. Or something.

I don't see why it couldn't have been both.
Or why the former played into the latter.

I mean, it did for me.
I love ScarJo, and action movies, but the white-washing kept me out of the theater.

Maybe I'll catch it when it streams for free.
In the meantime: Atomic Blonde!
Now that's a movie I can't wait to see.

I'd say it's top ten live action anime films, but then again, it isn't like there are a strong contenders save for just a small few.

Like I was severely disappointed in Lupin the Third live action.

How many live action anime films have legitimately been good? They can be good/decent films but performed badly financially like this one.

the three films I legitimately enjoyed were: Death Note, Ruroni Kenshin, Gants. I'm going to try Kaiji later, I hear it's good.

Guyver 2 was pretty decent, but that mainly goes into "taking a ****** first, and making it better" category and not really dealing with what is presented in the series.

I also want to watch Ousama Game, only because I enjoyed the manga, but I hear it's crap.

I'm watching the live drama "Liar's game"

YeahvI'd say Death Note was among the few good ones I know of. Hope this is too but have not yet had a chance to see it.

The whole thing was miscalculated from the ground up. If they were counting on anime fans, or people familiar with the original putting them in the black after spending $110 mil, I think they overestimated the size of that audience, and then they alienated the purists straight away.

They advertised it as an arty, quirky, high-concept sci-fi, which is a category of movie that rarely makes money, at least in the short term. Then they changed tack and implied that it was sci-fi action and it wasn't.

I don't think this movie would be better with an R rating either; it would just be an R rated failure rather than a PG-13 failure. I do agree that an adaptation of Ghost in the Shell would be better if it were more adult oriented, but this one was a lost cause on a conceptual level.

I loved it. Every time there was a scene that looked like it was ripped right out of the anime, I geeked out. I mean it wasn't perfect but this is possibly the best anime live action movie made in America ever and Scarjo flat out looks like The Major. I mean damn... the fight in that huge puddle of water, the spider tank scene, all the visuals, just damn.

This really didn't need an R rating. I mean the only thing I could recall in the original anime was some dude getting his head blown up but that's hardly R material.

Of course it does. From the trailers alone you can see bunches of people getting shot. Quick-cut frenetically, with no trace of blood. That isn't the way that should work.

And just looking at some clips of the anime on Youtube I see dudes getting shot in the face, brains and blood flying around.

You're right, it isn't. But it's how PG-13 works unfortunately. This is why I was so happy to actually see blood coming out whenever Wolverine killed someone in Logan.

Maybe we'll see a director's/extended cut?

Unless it's something they've already done the VFX for, probably not at this rate. Whenever low-grossing films get the extended cut treatment, it's not like the studio is paying to put back in expensive scenes.

Watched it last night with the new gf. I rather enjoyed it, but then, I knew the original manga and anime. Couple of missed opportunities plot wise, that could have been expanded on (what happens to Batou after a certain point for example) but it was damn good to see Beat Takeshi on screen again

Well, a new anime from the creators of SAC and a new anthology manga are being produced. So there's that.
