35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. 3

The upcoming Monday marks the 35th anniversary of one of the most iconic video games ever: Super Mario Bros. 3.

It was first released for the Nintendo Famicom (NES) in Japan on 23 October 1988, in North America on 12 February 1990 and in the PAL Region on 29 August 1991. The game has 8 levels, and introduces the Koopalings, who use their airships.

I got it for Christmas 1991, and have memories of still playing it a lot during February evenings in 1992. It wasn't until April 1992 we managed to beat it (together, as a group of friends).

The game appears in the 1989 movie The Wizard. While released in pre-digital days, Western video gamers knew everything about it even before it was first released in North America and the PAL Region.

The game is a masterpiece but it is way too long to finish in one sitting. It should have had a save battery.

This is my favorite 2D Mario game. I remember playing it since I was three. I never got bored of playing this game or watching the cartoon based off topped. Anyone remember the McDonald's toys based off Mario 3?

Can't wait for Wonder but I'd be shocked if that game can surpass this for me. Even Mario World couldn't.

When Super Mario 2 was released, finding a copy was pretty hard to do for a while. Super Mario 3 was even harder - the game was like a cultural awareness event for the moment....

I remember everyone at school pouring over the Nintendo Power shots and for some reason the Mario powers were a "big deal". The "Tanooki Suit" was legendary.

Super Mario 3 felt like an important part of life in those moments.

I love Mario 3 so much. I usually play through it about once per year. I have the gameboy advance version of it. I had 2 of those McDonalds Mario toys. I kinda wish that I still had them. Has anybody else ever typed in old McDonalds toys into ebay just to browse through the results and have memories flood back into your head? I used to really love the transforming food toys. Like one would start off as a hamburger and then turn into a hamburger robot.

My second favorite Mario title, next to SMB2. Played it constantly back in the day and loved it -- still do. Saw the cartoon, had the McDonald's toys, even kept the Happy Meal boxes for a time. It's such a great game. I played the original on the NES, the polished one on the SNES, and the release on the GBA. Tight controls, pleasant music and graphics, and it was a great way to fill the time on a rainy day.

When I first played it, my cousin owned it, I was madly in love with it. I was so sad when I had to go home. Then one day after getting home from school my dad surprised me by buying me my own Mario 3 cartridge. But he only gave it to me on one condition: I was scared of dogs at the time, he made me hold my family pet dog, I agreed to do it because of how much I loved this game. I got over my fear of dogs because of it.

Does anyone remember the movie Return to Green Acres? I think it was also for the 25th anniversary of the show. Super Mario Bros. 3 is mentioned in the movie.
