Opinion on a possible Sega making a comeback

We all know that this won't happen anytime soon but do any of you see Sega getting back into the console business again even if it takes a long time and if so, why or why not?

I don't think Sega would do well even if they did go back to consoles. Microsoft and Sony are pretty much ruling the console market at the moment, so Sega wouldn't sell many consoles anyway.

Even Nintendo are not selling as much as Sony or Microsoft. Sega wouldn't even sell half as much as Nintendo. Sega should just stick to the games department and not the console department.

Sega cannot even afford producing another console. You do realize the entire Japanese gaming industry, Sega, Square, Konami, Capcom, etc. all suffered massive losses this last generation right?

No, it's far to expensive to make a console. Each time a company make a new console they nearly bankrupt themselves because making a console unit is more costly then the retail price is. The money comes from strong game sales.

Sega is doing fine as a game developer and I don't think they can or want to make a new console.

No. Getting into the crowded console space right now is suicide. It's far too expensive to compete in. It will never happen.

The only company who could stand a chance is probably Apple.

No. Not now or in the future.

The market can't even support 3 consoles at the same time, or more than one handheld.

There's a reason the Gamecube, Wii-U and Vita did not sell well. And if Nintendo didn't strike a fad with Wii's motion controls in 2006, the Wii would have never sold as well as it did

Nintendo considers themselves more of a toy maker, and not a video game maker. They've been positioning themselves as such with every console after the SNES. They're a non-issue in terms of Sony vs. Microsoft because they're not going after the same pie.

Could SEGA come out of left field now with a console that might blow PS4 and X-Box One out of the water? Possibly. But the risk vs. reward would really, really make their investors nervous. Better they just make and license games.

It seems like the market can only support two consoles that are almost exactly the same with poor exclusive content and nothing more.

If Nintendo can't stand their ground with the best exclusives on the market and by making some of the best games they've made in a decade, then Sega, who has a total of one console franchise with any signs of life, can't do it. Although, maybe they'd do OK if they offered the exact same third-party games as MS/Sony with a couple average exclusives in the mix for die-hards to argue over.
