Börje Salming has passed away

Swedish former ice hockey player Börje Salming passed away yesterday, suffering from ALS. He was born on 17 April 1951, and was a defence player. He originally played for Kiruna AIF, before signing for Brynäs IF in 1970. He won the Swedish Ice Hockey Championship in 1971 and 1971, while playing for Brynäs IF.

During the IIHF World Championship in Moscow, Soviet Union in April 1973 he scored a famous goal when Team Sweden defeated Team Finland, 2–1, and won the silver medals.

In October 1973, Börje Salming began to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL. In 1989, he signed for the Detroit Red Wings where he played for one season. In 1990, he returned to Sweden to play three seasons for AIK Solna in the Swedish Elite League before retiring from ice hockey.

In November 1996, he was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame and in 1998, he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame. His brother, Stig Salming, also played ice hockey, as a defence player for Brynäs IF and, in national team competitions, also for Team Sweden.
