Like the 2016 movie this movie is a failure! Without me it cant be good. These Utrosm are more powerful than the others but only i can kill the turtles! Now wait for the next series and movies where will fight and kill them!

I quite enjoyed the movie, the animation was amazing and I liked the tone shift of the later half, some of the scenes reminded me a lot of Akira and Evangelion at times,

Well, the real answer is that there are numerous factors to this but they all lead to when and where the reviews came from, not to mention the way the Tomato meter works.

The 1990 movie has 54 review many of which stretch all the way back to 1990, with many of the critics being general movie critics like Gene Siskel. Some of these older reviews tend to... Really play up the Domino's Pizza product placement as if that is all the movie exists for. More recent reviews tend to be more positive.

The Rise Movie only has 9 reviews so far, some of which are from sites like IGN. So despite having a lower rating, it's still worth noting that the 1990 still has nearly three times as many positive reviews on RT than the Rise movie. This may change as more reviews for the Rise movie come in.

Then of course there is the fact that a 5.5/10 and a 10/10 review both just count as positive on RT. Likewise, there is also no difference between a 4.5/10 and a 0/10 on RT either.

None of this actually means that if you asked anyone of these critics they would agree or disagree with the RT ranking, I'm just trying to point out that review aggregate sites are inherently flawed.

It was great!

-Introduces (The) Krang & a proper Casey Jones
-Surprisingly violent, blood & all, character deaths, body horror
-Leonardo & Casey have a close relationship, which we've never seen before
-Retains its sense of humor while upping the stakes & taking on a notably more serious tone
-Animation is gorgeous as ever, better, even, given the higher budget
-Leonardo finally comes into his own & becomes the leader we know him to be otherwise
-Potential Image run (Vol.3) easter eggs in the form of Casey having a chainsaw & Leonardo losing an arm
-Glimpse of the future timeline is as grim & dystopian as in 4kids, Mirage, etc
-Feels like it properly closes this chapter in TMNT history

If I have any criticism it would only be that the plot is one we've seen before, quite recently, even. The 2012 show already did the whole Krang invasion/terraforming/mutating thing, more than once. There have been shades of it in IDW, too. I'd rather they have done something more original, and/or expand on the origin of The Krang, to make them feel more distinct. Set up how they established the Yokai city, etc. But that's fine, no biggie, I assume Andy & the gang wanted to put their own spin on a story from turtles past that they like, considering many of the staff did work on the past show as well.

Bit of a bittersweet experience overall, knowing this will likely be the end, but it's a good & fitting one. Just would've hit a little harder if it had come after a few more seasons of show, to allow for the growth & development that they sort of had to force into the finale & film to come about organically.

I'm happy it's getting a lot of love, though I won't watch it until Season 2 is on Netflix.

I still don't understand why they didn't release the movie before, it was announced I think at the same time as season 2, it was announced to already be in production in February 2019. I still believe the movie was finished and they just didn't know when to release it but could've easily been released as soon as Season 2 finished. Almost as if they didn't know what strategy to take after cutting the episode order of season 2 so instead of sending it out to die they just didn't move the project along at any real speed to see if they thought of something up and only because the project was basically done it was eventually released. I don't buy the whole 3+ years of development for a movie of a show that didn't even get to finish its second season.

But that wouldn't have happened regardless I think. If Rise had been at least moderate successful enough to keep it chugging along for say 4 seasons.. I think this movie would've likely come out after a full run of season 2 or some time during season 3 at the latest so it still wouldn't have been a finale to the series.

I also wonder how much the cancellation of Rise changed this movie, clearly they had enough time to at least plan some sort of "finale" for season 2. I'm guessing that was not the original plan at all. I also think this movie was likely changed a bit knowing it was the last thing it'd be produced but I would also guess that most of the skeleton of the original pitch of the movie had already been done pre-cancellation so it's not like they could've just changed everything.

Hopefully we learn these answers in a couple of years once enough time has passed and the people in the show start talking about what went on behind the scenes. I'm guessing right now they'd be relatively quiet just in case the project was (however unlikely) revived.

The movie was pretty good for what it was, the animation was really, really good. I also liked how the movie really did balance the silly stuff with more serious plots as it went on, I really was surprised how much the movie focused on Leonardo's love for his brothers, all the moments between Casey and the Turtles, and Leo/Raph's interactions. Each Turtle also got a time to shine, like Don using the escape pods and melding with the computer, Michelangelo opening the portal to save Leonardo at the end, etc. Also surprisingly touching and dark by the end, I really thought Krang was going to kill him.

The show finally covered the Krang, we saw the end of the Foot Clan, and surprised the Hippo mutant and Warren Stone just kinda disappeared after the beginning of the movie, but oh well. I also liked they confirmed Cassandra is Casey's mother rather than them being similar for no reason.

If nothing else, the Season 2 3-part finale and this movie is what Rise should of been like from the beginning. If it was like this, the show probably would have been more successfull. They made way too many silly/uninteresting episodes in the first season and it's what turned people off, but if they kept it like the tail-end of Season 2 and this movie it would have been fine.

This is probably the end of Rise of the TMNT, so I'm glad they were able to get this movie out to wrap it up.

No, Slash was never in the show and the only new characters introduced are Casey (different character from Cassandra) and three Krang (one of who I believe is meant to be Ch'rell). We also get a cameo of who I believe is Bishop.

Yeah and the only TMNT villain in the show outside of Shredder was Baxter but as a little boy. We never got Leatherhead, Rat King, or even Bebop/Rocksteady surprisingly.

The show mostly had an all-new cast of mutants till the tail-end.

I mean, variation is good but to me the series felt more like Power Rangers than TMNT, and it didn’t stray a little from the source material; it strayed a whole freaking mile from the source material. Raph being the oldest brother and the leader instead of Leo? Mystical weapons instead of the regular ninja ones? Splinter being a stereotypical Asian bum? Yeeeeah, no thank you.

Just saying…

They totally copied the portal scene at the end from “Guardians Of The Galaxy”.

Good analysis.

I'm more than happy we got the movie to sign the show off, BUT I have to say I think I actually prefer the short one shot episodes more. The movie took a slightly different direction and tone. Not sure if this was due to the overly negative feedback on the show, or if it was the plan all along to go down that route. But yeah, great movie but the series was fantastic (for me...). Agree on the Yokai thing as well, that was a cool spin/idea on the franchise.

Always makes me laugh when people get mad at the show for not following the exact TMNT methods and principles. "Leo wasn't the leader...he MUST be the leader" for example. Pretty autistic thinking. It was proven that everything that happened or put in place was there for a reason and were seeds to allow greater things to grow.

Others also moaning about the individual episodes not being part of a larger arc.

I grew up in an era where kids TV shows were mostly one shot episodes. As the only time you got to watch anything was after school or on a Saturday morning. If you missed an episode there was no way of "catching up". This whole "every episode in the series MUST follow an arc" BS is garnered from 2000's shows onwards.

I'm happy with individual, fun episodes. That's just me.

Anyway, I'm not here to provoke (honestly!) - the Rise fans got what they wanted - a fitting send off. And the non-fans got what they wanted - an end to the insanity. A (kinda) win-win for all. I guess it's now back to the forumulaic TMNT vibe from now on after this little "experiment".

Totally agree, man. I much preferred the lighter tone of the series, & missed its sense of humor being at the forefront, here. Still good, though.

Just a shame to learn about how much meddling got in the way of this, which I'll probably make another thread about.

Watched it 3 times already.

Love the 3rd act, legit thought they’re gonna kill Leo off (perhaps similar to 2k3’s Same As It Never Was). When Leo smiled and Krang just screamed “WIPE THAT GRIN OFF YOUR FACE”, **** just got serious.

And I like that the turtles and Casey cried, surprisingly A LOT in the film; I don’t think they ever did in the other series. There’s no shame for boys to cry - it makes it more emotional, their struggle felt real and the stakes that much higher.

I love the color and art style in the series and the movie certainly brings it to another whole level.

Shame it’s stuck only on Netflix, wish it’d at least release digitally on iTunes and physically.

I much prefer the tone here than most of the series. As I said if the show was like this mostly action oriented with some small humor here and there the show might have been better received. Even the designs here I was so used to I didn't even think of them when watching the movie.

The first season especially had way too many silly eps that just didn't feel like Ninja Turtles. It was like the Turtles just doing random things. It got better as it went on but the Season 2 final eps and this movie is what Rise should of been from the start.

I guess it's sad in a way the writers hit their stride too late. It is what it is, I guess. Oh and I still don't like black April, or Black O'Neil as I call her, but she was a little less annoying here than some of the episodes. I just don't like when black women act all loud and proud and talk over everyone, but she was toned down a bit here.

OT - I only properly watched Season 1 so not sure if it has any crying scenes. The tone of the later seasons doesn’t feel like it’d have any sad scenes so pretty sure it’s unlikely.

2003 - I think there’s a scene where Raph was in tears, maybe in the episode Leo got beaten almost to death.

2012 - None comes to mind. They’ll look sad but I don’t think I ever see them cry.

The movies I think only the first one where Splinter spoke to them spiritually at the campfire.
