The knock-off Movie Star turtles don’t all use the same Movie Star Leonardo mold. Not to mention, you get Movie Star Splinter and Movie Star Foot Soldier with the knock-off set. “Movie Star” Super Shredder is the best figure of the Movie Star boxset, but “Movie Star” Super Shredder does not come on the 1991 cardback. As far as I’m concerned, the box [that all six figures come in] is the selling point for the whole Target exclusive Movie Star boxset.

A part of me thinks it is interesting that Movie Star Leo’s torso, arms, and legs were used for the other turtles. That’s a first and it makes them stand out from the originals. I still feel disappointed that Playmates did not release replicas of the original Movie Star turtles, Movie Star Splinter, and Super Shredder. I’ll let the “Movie Star Super Shredder” title go, because the other Super Shredder re-releases from the mid 90s and 1999 have that name. I would have skipped the basic Splinter as “Movie Star Splinter” and added the Movie Star Foot Soldier. This set was a big letdown as far as I’m concerned. Instead of retooling figures, Playmates needs to produce new figures for a MOTU Origins-type toyline. Last edited by mikey0; 03-01-2021 at 11:43 AM. |

I've heard the playmates lost the molds many times as excuses but we've seen they do despite it. Movie leo didn't have his belt in the previous generations rerelease and now he does. perhaps some are just easier to get to?

Did these sell out, or are they not live yet?

I believe the Movie Star boxset went up on Target’s website early yesterday morning. So yes, they’re sold out.

How many copies of these "new" retro sets do you think they produce for each set? 5000? 10000? Much more?

So...all the weird choices in these sets is actually what makes them interesting to me.
I mean, if you want the original duplicated precisely...uhhh, just get the original. Yeah they are phoning this in but that's giving us more unique pieces to collect. |

Playmates could have, at least, flocked the basic Splinter and given him yellow sclera and orange weapons. These are supposed to remind us of the original versions of the Movie Star turtles and basic wave movie characters.

They could have. But I already have that figure. Don't you? If not what's stopping you? Instead I am glad to add another unique variant.

I wanted this just for the turtles. Yes, they look bad but I'm not paying over 500 for a set off Ebay and at least here I would have cheap imitations to "complete" the Secret of Ooze wave. I have Splinter, Foot Solider, Tokka, Razhar and Super Shredder.
Honestly I didnt think this would sell out right away since the Walmart Comic Book set didnt sell out until like 2 days ago after being online for weeks. |

I refuse to support this company when they can't even put in more effort than ACTUAL bootleggers.

I'm torn. These were some of my favorite Turtle figures as a kid, and I'd love to share them with my youngest (Older brother doesn't seem to like the "Ni-na" Turtles as much) but these are a very poor showing.

If you’re tempted, just by one of those coolers and stuff your unopened figures inside.

How did these sell out so fast yesterday on a Sunday morning when there was no heads up they were even going up on Target? Scalpers have inside information or something. Nonsense.

There are multiple enormous groups of TMNT collectors on Facebook who pass word on.

Why those colors for Movie Star Raph, Movie Star Mike, Movie Star Leo, and “Movie Star Splinter”? Are those colors for the Movie Star turtles (excluding Don) based on the 2k12 turtles? What are the 2k12 colors doing on repros of vintage figures?

The Target website is notorious for stocking small quantities of items so don't look to the set selling out as being some huge indicator of popularity. Though I will say, these have been reproduced fewer times than the 88 Turtle figures which probably impacts their demand.
Also, the set is priced very well. You are getting them for 7.50 each which is a steal no matter how you slice it. It makes me suspect Playmates is not necessarily releasing these to make money. They are probably making a very small return on this set. It could be a licensing thing. Often times, when a company holds a license, they must release product or they could have the license taken away. Since Playmates is not doing any new figures right now for TMNT (a huge mistake on their part considering how well Super7 and NECA are doing with their adult-centric lines which Playmates could emulate if they desired), the only thing they can really put out are reprints. So they shovel out reprints (low effort) which barely make any money, and sit back and rake in easy money from sub-licensing TMNT to other companies such as Super7 and NECA. They really don't have to do much of anything in this scenario. Just a theory. I had the movie star figures as a kid and no longer do. It briefly considered getting this set but did not. Maybe if Splinter were the real movie star splinter I would have considered it more. Also the vastly inferior accessory selection compared to the originals is really disappointing. Playmates doesn't understand how to appeal to their retro fanbase. No half measures. You don't throw a reproduction of the figure in with a repack of the wrong accessories. I think the leadership at Playmates is to blame, they allow poor quality and badly planned ideas to go forward, they probably have lots of talented and good people working there and just aren't given the right guidance. One final thought... given how well NECA is doing these days, I wonder if they might be a contender to take the license away from Playmates at some point. Playmates is floundering while NECA is flourishing, it's only a matter of time before some bigger dog comes along and outbids them on the license. Have you seen Playmates new Godzilla/Kong toys? Totally hideous... I don't know how they are staying afloat. Last edited by Zulithe; 03-02-2021 at 02:09 AM. |
