Man, they really insist on reinventing Scooby Doo so much. Like I enjoy a new version of SD but they really love to come out with some weird and unnecessary iterations. And an adult themed Scooby Doo spin off? That's just...taking liberties a bit too far. Weirder that they're choosing Velma as opposed to Daphne since she was always "the attractive one" and the most obvious choice.

Thinking about it now, I wonder if the Harley Quinn TV show's success has led to this ludicrous thought process.

I think Velma lends herself more to the "independent woman lead" stereotype, trope, and narrative that a lot of entertainment is leaning into these days.

Velma's seen as the gay one, and several writers, from James Gunn to those behind the Mystery Inc series, intended for her to come out. So that fits current year

I was intrigued enough to watch the Daphne & Velma live-action movie that came out a few years ago, and while I thought it had some charm, I am not interested in a "Scooby Universe" that doesn't feature Scooby-Doo prominently.

The writers from the 80s era. The chemistry and build-up was right there over the course of three seasons. Those last few Scrappy era shows were legit some of the best Scooby-Doo I've ever watched, only surpassed two decades later by Mystery Inc.

The 'Shaphne' fanbase has been steadily building for a while, and WB have noticed. There's even nods to this pairing in Mystery Inc and Be Cool Scooby-Doo.

Too bad there's no real hints to it in the finale movie for 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, which was the last show to really push it forward. Shaggy and Daph basically end the original franchise with a full family...they live and travel together, have two dogs, an adopted kid. The whole works. It was legit game over by that point.

I'm surprised they haven't done an Adult Shaggy one where Scooby is a normal dog, he barely knows the gang and lusts for either Velma or Daphne and then when he gets high as a kite, all the Mystery Inc adventures happen in his mind.
