So if the Rogen TMNT movie fails, then what?
![]() So if the movie comes out next year and it's another big flop or even just barely breaks even, what happens then and what will Viacom/Nickelodeon do with the TMNT property?

Like any franchise, put it on hold again until the next variation.

Given the fact that it's animated and cheap to make it would have to spectacularly under-perform for them lose money and since it's animated the public perception of what animated movies should make is substantially lower. The much lauded Into The Spider-Verse wasn't exactly a huge earner but was touted as a huge success. TMNT 2007 grossed just shy of $100 million and that was enough for it to deemed a success and a sequel green lit (even if it didn't materalise). I imagine with Viacom's marketing campaign when it kicks will be better than WB's so I could see Mutant Mayhem will performing better.
Still I suppose it's possible for it to completely tank. Even without a promo campaign I would expect more online conversation about this but there is zero buzz about this. All of the big outlets that cover comic book movie and pop culture related news aren't covering the latest updates on it. If not for Rogen's name being attached to it I imagine there would be zero coverage of it. The only people I see interested in this are the ten or so fans who love anything TMNT. If it does flop I'd bet the ongoing series is cancelled or hastily reworked. While they are unconnected to the movie I imagine the Paramount+ villain movies don't happen. The status of the live action movie goes from 'it may happen at some point possibly maybe' to 'no way in hell'. The TMNT franchise is just the IDW book and 80s inspired merchandise..until some exec at Paramount pitches the 'genius' idea of going back to the roots of the franchise and pulls out a presentation of the turtles fighting Bebop and Rocksteady in Dimension-X. |

Technically, I guess I voted what they SHOULD do... rather than what they probably will, which is probably fail to learn a damn thing, but at this point it just feels like jinxing it to even choose that.

Nothing will change. They never learn. And Rogen will call the critics and audience “white supremacists” and other vile things ‘cause he’s a manchild

He'll probably just be silent. He's well insulated from this. If it fails, on paper he was only one producer amongst others and nothing else so he hardly goes down with the ship. If it's a big success, then he can say his hands were all over it (and again what a big TMNT fan he's always been) and reap the kudos.

Which as I pointed out was seen as financially successful enough to green light a sequel. The only reason we didn't get one if because Mirage and Imagi couldn't agree on a direction and eventually the former passed in favour of a new live action movie.

I think in their minds that would like another full on Fred Wolf revival but there is no way they will ever commit the kind of money to that right out of the gate. Instead I imagine that while still Fred Wolf inspired they may be eyeing smaller scale (and budgeted) movies with lesser known villains. Think of what they did with Bumblebee or what the first two MCU Spider-Man. So yeah if this flops we may be spared the turtles fighting cajun Leatherhead in a swamp. Quote:

I'd love Nickelodeon/Viacom to lose the rights, but I'm guessing the budgets gonna be too small to be a failure, since they're mainly casting teenagers.

If this movie fails, we'll presumably still get one season of that show it's just a glorified pilot for, as I'm assuming that is already in the works. What I believe will happen in the case of failure is something like this:

If it fails, they will probably wait for 4-5 years and try again. And if they believe hard enough, it's gonna be 1989 all over again.

Knowing Paramount/Viacom, they'll likely repeat the same mistakes over and over. Andrew, let me ask, what do you think would happen? And the off chance that Nick does sell the rights, who would you think would be a good fit to buy the IP? Because even I struggle with this idea and I made a thread about DC or Marvel buying the rights, long ago. |

Honestly I'd just like to see TMNT's rights owned by like an independent studio, or an individual that sees the potential. We need the human heart back at the center, not mega corporations with their focus groups and agendas.

There won't be any change.
I've seen posts on Twitter that it's one of the anticipated animated movies coming out this year (along with Spiderverse and Mario movies) but we haven't got a trailer yet, so I don't know how people think that yet. Isn't it supposed to have tv series after this movie. As well as this solo villains movies. Also wasn't there Live action movie coming out too?

TMNT is too big of a name for a small studio or a person to be able to buy it. Unless, you know, Elon Musk turns out to be a huge TMNT fan.
