You probably don't want to go by a set "number" given that most collections have a variety of thickness to every item in the box - comics themselves can be thicker or thinner, the backer boards, etc.

If you don't want to cram boxes then just fill them until you are comfortable sorting through them and put some foam blocks in the front of each box to keep every book upright when you aren't sorting.
