01/19/10 Update
Since there has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the Ooze Canisters and because I have received multiple requests to do a second run Im going to start an interest list for Run II.
I wont be doing anything with the second run until the first run is completed, but the list open for those interested.
Hopefully we can get enough interest to move forward with Run II.

Today is the day Im placing the order with the Machine Shop so Im locking the run list.

12/10/09 Update

Ok Dudes, I’ve got the final cost for these Canisters.

First, a recap of what you're getting.

These Canisters will have 2 Machined Aluminum End Caps. The machine shop will start off with getting the outside diameter of the solid stock down to the correct size, then hallow out the inside to the dimension of the acrylic tube. The Caps are then going to have the 6 slots machined into them.

The main body of the Canister will be made of a Clear Acrylic tube, cut to the proper length, minus the thickness of the end cap so the overall completed length will be 14 inches long.

Then the part that has caused the most grief- the Rolled Aluminum Spacer plates.
Each Canister will have 2 rolled Aluminum plates that fit perfectly between the two end caps. They will be glued onto opposites sides of the acrylic tube.
When I say rolled plate, it means that the shop will take flat stock aluminum and roll it so it matches the diameter of the acrylic tube perfectly.
Here is a quote from the machine shop explaining why it is a difficult part to manufacture:

On the rolled part, that is right at the minimum for our roller so it gets to be a little tricky.
we will need to roll the part much longer than it needs to be and then we will have to cut it down to size so that make it a little expensive to do.

And Finally, The TGRI logo decals.
Pretty straight forward, black vinyl decals.
I traced TGRI letters from multiple screen shots of the film to get the “font” just right, and the size/spacing perfect.
Also, I've had a few requests for Comic style TCRI decals on their canisters, so that’s an available option if you prefer the comic version of the company name.

Ok, now the purchase details.

The lead time for the shop is roughly 6 weeks, add a week assembly time, and we’re looking at about a 50 day turnaround time.

This will be a pre-order run.

Also, I was hoping to have a prototype to show, but since Im trying to keep the cost as low as possible, I was unable to do so.
Again, a message from the shop:

Charles, to make two of these [end caps]would take us the better part of a day, the
cost to set up each operation would have to be divided into two parts, I
don't think you would be willing to pay what it would cost. This is why you
are seeing such a nice reduction from one quantity to another.

Just know that I have used this shop before and they do great work, and I’m not going to accept anything then perfection from any of my vendors on this project.

Not that I want to burst your bubble man, but historically, the only canisters the fanbase has shown interest in are the actual props from the film.

Thanks for your input, but to my knowledge no one has built/done a run of screen accurate replicas of the canisters.

there have been some on ebay over the years, which didn't sell.

But who knows! Maybe everyone on the board will want one of yours. I'm just saying that it hasn't ended well in the past, and I would hate for you to end up making a bunch of expensive props you can't sell. Just my 2 cents.
