Recognizable by look and name only, sure.

But if we're talking about origin and what Aquaman's personality and character are like, then no, the general public has no clue.

Most people here are talking about when saying Aquaman is well known

I agree with CyberCubed on this one. Most people do not know who Aqua-man is. They probably recognize the name, but place him with a bunch of other random super heroes and most people probably couldn't point him out imo.
He is probably similar to Ant-man or Ironman before they had main stream success.

You do realize that those millions of people might be aware of Aquaman the way how many people are aware about Superman or Batman: through the second hand experience with some, word of mouth, some old comic books and TV shows, which they have watched when they were kids?

I haven't watched anything related to Batman up until 1996, but I was aware of his existence years before, due to the word of mouth, some fragments of old shows and movies.

Batman/Superman are cultural phenomenons. Even people who don't read comics, don't watch cartoons or movies, at least know who they are. It's the same thing as Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny.

Aquaman is nowhere as recognizable. As I said, Wonder Woman and Robin (Dick Grayson) are the two next most recognizable DC characters after Batman/Superman.

Okay literally no one here said Aquaman is as recognizable as Batman/Superman but he is far from being known as an "Unknown Hero"

I still don't believe your average Joe Blow on the street would know who Aquaman is. Or a 45 year old soccer mom named Aunt Judith.

Mainstream is someone mentioning Mickey Mouse and everyone in the world instantly knowing who that is. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Robin, Spiderman and maybe the X-men (the latter is probably pushing it though, I should just say Wolverine), are the most well known superheroes.

Joe Blow, Aunt Judith, and Little Timmy may have heard the name, but they barely know who it is.

If she's a MOM then she's not called AUNT JUDITH.

Geez, man.

You are wrong. People do know about Aquaman, probably in passing, but they do.
You won't convince anyone otherwise.
The end.

They may be familiar with the name, but that's not the same as knowing who it is. Bring up "King of Atlantis" and they're probably more familiar with Ariel's father "King Triton" from The Little Mermaid.

Okay. As long as you knew that and weren't making a really weird mental mistake. Because it read like that.

Pretty sure anyone who watched Super Friends as a kid knows who Aquaman is.

So that coveted 70 year old demographic.

But seriously, in 2018 we can't be like nobody knows who he is. People know who he is. Even if BvS wasn't critically popular it made a ton of money... which means people saw him in that lame scene. And Justice League... almost the same story.
