Motoko looks white as all hell.... the only thing Asian about her is the name. I'm more concerned about the general setting of the movie. Is it still going to take place in Japan or will they screw it up even further and make it take place in the US instead?

There are tons of examples of whitewashing in Hollywood that are far more insulting like the recent Dr. Strange one. To Hollywood's defense they only do it because sadly no one wants to see Asian actors.

It's been over ten years since I saw GitS but are asian actors really required? Is it that big of a deal to change Motoko's name? That doesn't even sound like a real name either and googling the name seems to confirm that. She's an android and I don't expect that to necessarily be asian looking. What things make this necessarily be set in Japan? Is the movie taking place in Tokio that important? It's more about what makes a human a human than anything else If I recall correctly. The concept of GitS can be done in any setting.

When I watch an anime I don't particularly think of the character as Japanese unless the setting is explicitly in Japan. With that said I wouldl've liked a japanese major and I think Johansson will make a terrible major and I'm unsure if Hollywood will be able to recreate what made GitS so awesome in the 90s but I do have higher hopes than this japanese produced version since their live action adaptations are usually DTV trash.

Edit: I just saw a set pic and if they're going for a Japanese look to the character or the setting is still Tokio then yeah it's going to be pretty embarrasing.

The producers realized that with a name like Motoko Kusangi, the character would be easily identified as Japanese, so Producer Steven Paul told Buzzfeed that Johansson’s character wouldn’t be referred to by Motoko Kusanagi, they decided to just call her by her rank, the Major.

I don't mind a character being referred to simply by their rank, but that's pretty damn insulting. If it's such a big deal, simply rename the character.

I had no idea Edge of Tomorrow (or Live, Die, Repeat) was originally a manga or whatever it was before the movie.
