"The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles must face a terrifying new threat... high school!" Wacky montages ensues. Mikey doing slapstick stuff and clowning around, Donatello leading some kind of science club or something awful like that.

I think TMNT has always had "coming of age" elements, like learning to live apart from your father, managing emotion, or just getting into trouble.
It's just that when I hear them talk about "focusing on the teenage element" of the characters, it makes it sound like they want to get away from the other elements. I mean, even Rogen has clarified that he doesn't want to drop the "Mutant Ninja Turtle" aspect. Rather, that he just wants to use the "teenage" bit as the jumping on point. But I guess I find that hard to believe. I actually hesitate to expect any elements focusing on ninja or their history in Japan. More importantly, I'm not expecting those bits to have any teeth, even if they do appear. And that's really my main concern, as it typically is - that this is going to be primarily aimed at kids. When the creators say they are going to treat these characters as true teenagers, what I am actually hearing is that they are going to treat them as tweens, in a movie made for tweens. I'd love to be wrong. I mean, it's not like Seth Rogen doesn't have the pedigree tell a story with realistic teens, or to tell a comic-accurate story. The ingredients are actually there. |

TMNT should not be just for 5-10 year olds. It wasn't created for them, even though that's who latched onto it the hardest.
BUT, since it IS just for 5-10 year olds now and forever thanks to Nickelodeon, then yeah, I for sure have outgrown the brand. It's a shame, it had so much potential that was never fully explored, and now it never will be. Too bad.

In the history of this brand, there has only recently been this push for surface-level awkward teenager TMNT by higher-ups, at least since 2016 with OotS. Fans haven't "outgrown" the characters, the characters are being infantilized. The fact that they're continuing on this trajectory despite it flopping every time they've tried it compared to their pre-2016 efforts is puzzling.
Could the reaction to this one sentence from Seth Rogen be considered a little cynical? Maybe, but you can forgive the skepticism given Viacom TMNT's recent history.

TMNT as a "brand" is something I've never had any interest in. So I'd have had to have been on board with it to begin with for me to be able to outgrow it. I'm the guy 50 meters away from it pointing at it and laughing, shaking my head.

I'm super grateful we have that film, and if we never get another great tmnt movie, I have to shrug my shoulders, because most properties don't get a movie adaption that great, and I still enjoy it to this day. It's not perfect, but very few adaptions are. Good lord, please bless us with the "Director's Cut" someday, because if it takes away all the goofy music and adds a little "teeth" to the action, I'm about ready to call it 99% perfect. But that's just the movies. There are plenty of great TMNT comics (and plenty of stinkers, sure). I'd mention City at War as a highlight, because it really does fulfill the potential of the "brand' to me. It asks all the right questions of the characters and feels like a great ending in many ways. I guess my point is that I don't view the franchise in that tragic of a light, but I do agree that it's being mismanaged and there is massive unfulfilled potential. Viacom/Nickelodeon should the hint eventually, but probably won't. Their abominations are failing and they are at least allowing good, actually successful products to be made in the more niche markets. Not holding my breath, but it'd be nice. |

Oh gosh, I can already hear the “ You wouldn’t hit a guy with glasses” joke from Donnie while fighting.
Will they have a villain in this at all? Or… |
