Most of those GTA games in my experience were rather short, story-wise.
But I guess that makes sense. I've read plenty of polls where it illustrated how plenty of people have literally sunk hundreds of hours into playing any GTA game, but also, only about 1% of people who play any GTA games have ever come close to finishing one. The VAST majority of people who play GTA abandon the story and missions after a couple of hours and then just go around blowing sh*t up with the rocket launcher. I do love how you have the freedom to do either/or, and in fact the ability to play it however you want is what I've always liked most about those games. But at the same time, if I end up not finishing a game I kinda feel like I wasted my time, a little bit. I love just screwing around or driving around listening to the radio, but I also make it a point to finish them.

The thing is I mostly just screw around while on the main story missions, but shooting pedestrians and running over them gets old quickly these days. I do it for about 5 minutes and then say, "Meh, I'm wasting my time I should be doing something else" and move on.
After the main story there's not much to do unless you want to go after 100+ collectibles or take over the entire hood which is just endless waves of enemies. There's the side missions for the taxi driving, police car, ambulance, but I only do it till I lose the first time. PS2 games are a lot smaller than I remember them being, the map in these old games is like a toybox compared to the modern games. |

GTA3, never beat it. GTVC, only played a few missions, GTASA, got pretty far into it and stopped (presently replaying, up to the HORRIFIC mission where you have to pilot a remote controlled plane and shoot a bunch of people around the map), GTA4 beat it, played ONE of the DLC campaigns, the one with the biker gang, but didn't go very far with it. GTA5, beat it. And yes, I bought GTA1 and GTA2 for PS1, also that London spinoff one... fairly unplayable.

GTA 4 was a lot bigger than the PS2 ones, but even then I felt like it was shorter than it could've been. I never got around to the spin-off ones or GTA V yet. Partly because my wife was busy with them and I'm "not allowed" to play "her" games until she's done with them. Because if I do better than her or beat it before she gets to, she gets pissy and figures there's no point going back to them. So I always end up getting distracted by other games in the meantime and forgetting to go back and play GTA V or Red Dead or whatever.
I'unno, I like the side missions and stuff. Makes the world feel more "alive". By the time I was done with Vice City I was collecting money from everyone in town and running sh*t like a boss, multiple giant garages full of sports cars, the works. The story was over with but there was still fun to be had, for me. Pretty sure the plane mission you're referring to is where my wife also quit San Andreas, Andrew. I think that mission was a rage-quit moment for a lot of people. I can't remember if I got past it or not, I try to beat every game I play but I know I did not finish SA. That always bothered me though. Sounds like it's still a pain in the ass.

If it's the toy plane missions those ones are optional, you don't really have to complete them to progress the main story. They'll stay on your map though.

Something is seriously wrong with those toy airplane controls. Worst controls I've ever experienced.

Very wrong. It'd be fine if it was fluid controls... but even if you're pinching the sticks with hair precision, one little nudge and the plane nose-dives or starts spinning uncontrollably.

Correction! The song I was thinking of from GTSA that I remembered was this:
And yes, it's still in the game. Also, I've encountered sort of a game breaking glitch in the mission where you have to park a car with a bomb inside a drug lab building, detonate the bomb, run out, get in a different car and drive up a ramp really fast and escape. Should you fail at all and have to restart from a checkpoint, the mission isn't winnable because when you drive inside, your car will suddenly start running into invisible barriers and you can't advance. The only solution is to completely exit the game and resume it. If you fail again, you'll have to do it again. Also, I'm missing a particular line. In the original GTASA, I remember CJ saying something like, "I'll TAKE those ducats!!" or "Those ducats are MINE!" when you pick up money from a dead body. I haven't heard that even once in this version.

Plane mission in Vice City was the one, where I've decided not to do 100% completion. It controls ****ed me so hard, it was probably one of the worst experiences I had in any game ever. Which is surprising considering how fluid, responsive and "arcade" everything else in the game. Its like Rockstar wanted to emulate real plane controls. |

If it helps, I changed the controls during all the flight missions to "classic" in the options menu. Something is seriously wrong with flying all planes in these GTA games, but I find setting the controls to classic from the default every time I fly a plane makes it more bearable.
It's the only way I completed the toy plane mission and passed the flight school. Seriously makes flying and steering around much more bearable. |

So if I never do the Zero missions including and after the plane one... what am I missing out on? What does completing his missions unlock beyond completion %?

Zero has 3 missions but if I remember right they don't block doing later missions. There's the heist missions in the casino with Woozie and you should see a green $ sign by his casino when they're available. I know Zero appears in those missions but I don't think you have to finish his toy plane missions for them to appear.
I nearly forgot to do the heist mission for Woozie because when I saw that green $ sign on the map I wrongly assumed they were just to buy something and not missions...but there's 5 missions there. |

The entire heist mission is basically 5 consecutive missions with Woozie with the green $ symbol that appears over his casino on the top right of the map.
It's easily missed because I didn't know those were missions and I just thought that meant something was available for purchase. |

Boy I'd love a remaster of Scarface: The World is Yours. That would be amazing.

Playing the games makes you realize how far gaming has come even from the early 2000's. The missions in the games are actually really short and simple, basically having you go to one area or drive to a certain destination. The enemies basically stand around like statues until you get close to them (and sometimes they don't even react when you shoot them), and they just come running toward you otherwise not even looking to hide behind cover or flank you. And now that the draw distance is better you can literally see further into warehouses/buildings you're in and see the enemies just standing there most of the time besides the few on patrol.
And then every other mission is just a race, using an item at a certain time, flying to a certain area, etc. It really makes you realize how far gaming has come compared to the missions in GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2. |

It's the AI that gets me. Way better AI for all NPCs and cars and stuff.
