So things have changed, what else is new?
Nowadays those jobs for kids and people who don't want to or can't find anything else. As I said two statements are not mutually exclusive.

Also, anyone expecting to have a cushy life by working in a McDonalds is an idiot by default or have not life experience.

Good. Work harder. Or find roommates or rent a room somewhere you can be miserable in for a while until you can crawl out of it into something better. It's a pretty good incentive. That's what I did. I even rented a room in a motel for like a year and it was killing me.
