What legal issues with the soundtrack?

Apparently Sega will owe a ton in royalties if they continue to use the music Michael Jackson made for Sonic 3. I don't think this was officially stated by Sega, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles has been absent from a lot of Sega/Sonic compilations lately and this collection will be the first time they're included again. Either they sorted things out with the music or they're gonna change some of the tracks up.

I swore that once upon a time I read that the Michael Jackson thing was only a rumor, or that like it ended up sounding like music he'd make so they threw him a cherry or something but it wasn't actually his music. Something like that.

I confess I never followed the story all that closely, though. But I could've sworn the whole "MJ did the music for that game" was a playground rumor later debunked. Weird.

I can't think of any collection that had Sonic 1 and 2 but not 3/Knuckles, unless you mean maybe those re-released Genesis with pre-built games.

I think one of the devs has confirmed it since. It's still not an "official" confirmation from Sega or anything, but I think it's been pretty much accepted that he did make music for Sonic 3.

They had the Sega Ages re-releases on Switch which stopped at Sonic 2. There was the Sega Genesis Collection game that excluded Sonic 3 and Knuckles as well as the Sega Genesis Mini console.

Even if he did do the music, I'm sure Jimmy Hart could whip up a soundalike knock-off which circumvents all legal liabilities in less than an afternoon.

It's like I have to think of everything for these people. They get paid a lot more than I do so I shouldn't have to do all the work for 'em.

I think the last collection that had Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles on it was the Mega Collection for Gamecube/Xbox/PS2.

You know, some levels in Sonic 3 on different systems had the music changed. I always wondered why that was since they were, ironically, the levels that it was alleged that MJ worked on. The rumor was that he was onboard early on, but didn't like the sound on the Mega Drive/Genesis and left the project. It has been known that when it came to his art (music or dance) he was a bit of a perfectionist. It's plausible that he left the project due to being dissatisfied with it because it couldn't get the sound that he had in mind.

To be fair, though, the Genesis in general isn't really all that known for its sound quality. It had decent hardware, but some of the games had so-so audio. One game that comes to mind is The Lion King. Even though the Sega version has a lot going for it, especially the wider screen to see when enemies or obstacles are coming easier (Can't Wait to Be King board really benefitted from this), I felt the SNES version had better sound and music (minus the Be Prepared level, which sounded terribly off-key).

This is one of those things where, since MJ himself never spoke of it, I kind of doubt that it's true.

I'unno, I guess we'll never know the truth. I mean it could be true but I have my doubts.

Well... Except for the music of Sonic and Streets of Rage. Everything else I agree

I like the Genesis (despite owning a SNES as a kid) but the sound for most games is generally ass.

I probably wouldn't have noticed much when I was a kid, but now that I have both it's extremely noticeable. Like if you play WWF Raw for SNES, then switch to the Genesis version, just the intro alone makes it sound like your speakers are broken. The wrestler themes sound f*cking horrible in that game, as well. One of the more noticeable examples.

*Listening to Streets of Rage themes while working on project* Yeah, Streets of Rage had some really good music.

You'll love part 4, they brought back the original composer and everything.

Streets of Rage just so ****ing early 90's and it ROCKED. Like I still remember renting it and once the stage 1 music started playing, we knew we were in for an awesome time. Like we had our doubts cause it was an all new game and not based on any arcade but once that music hit....

It's like Final Fight went for a more serious dark and gritty and at times intense soundtrack, Streets or Rage just went straight into the block rockin' beats.

I swear I'm like in the minority when it comes to videogames since I mostly like fighting games and beat-em-ups. People be talking about Horizon Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077 and the latest shooter game or whatever sequel Call of Duty has (are they still making games for that?), but for me, my 'Triple A' games I care about it is news of stuff like Streets of Rage 4, the re-release of Scott Pilgrim, Guilty Gear Strive, etc. Like I can be in a chat full of gamers and they never heard of Guilty Gear because all they play are all the shooter type games like Valorant or whatever.

Oh right. Yeah, sadly most of the time the Genesis soundtracks and whatnot sound better when it's their own stuff, Sonic, Shadow Dancer, Streets of Rage, Toe Jam and Earl, etc. But whenever it's based on an arcade or it's a 'SNES version vs the Genesis version deal', SNES wins all the time in the audio department.

They got the original composers but the music is mostly done by a new composer and I honestly don't mind when the music is this kickass. Easily the most memorable level in that game.

MJ did not use his hits for Sonic 3, but he did make new music for the game, and that there is the problem in regards to copywrite to Sonic 3 since Sega does not own the tunes MJ made for Sonic 3.

I'm surprised that this franchise is still thriving.

It feels so surreal ...

I mean if Mario can....

Though to be honest Nintendo is way bigger than SEGA nowadays. But I'm sure as SEGA exists in any way shape or form, so will Sonic, even if he takes breaks once in a while.

So, it appears that Sonic Colors: Ultimate is not only glitching/crashing on the majority of console systems, but it also contains bugs that can cause/trigger seizures. ( Seizure Warning! )

Do not support this game. Message/Alert the companies responsible. Report everyone involved. Sega ( ,or at least the executives/management, ) and Blind Squirrel Games need to be reprimanded for their role in this disaster.

I hope that someone is severely punished. Someone needs to get fired/jailed for this.
