Also eating rats was a big no, no for Splinter throughout City At War. It took him being trapped, nearly starving to death and being emotionally tortured by the Rat King for him to do that so I highly doubt he encouraged his sons to do it.

C'mon man, you know after being mutated their metabolism had to have sped up closer to something like a mammal's, especially with how active they are. Simple insects just wouldn't cut it. Also explains how pizza could have became a dietary staple, as packed with calories as it is.
