Wait until “prime day” snag on sale maybe

How old are you, if you don't mind my asking? Or, put another way, if your age doesn't start with a 4 then you probably aren't the target demographic!

How nice of Playmates to specifically market to us by adding stickers/banners celebrating our 40th anniversaries of birth!

I went to ebay to see if there were any listings on this and found out the scalpers have it priced close to 400 bucks. Hilarious!

Looking through the thread, I wanna say the people in this thread are mostly in the age range of mid-40s to early-50s and presumably male. So no matter how you slice the pizza, I think it's safe to say I'm not the target demographic of this specific Technodrome. That's not to say I wouldn't want a Technodrome toy, in general, though. And even this one would be neat if the price matched the aesthetics. And I don't mean that as an insult, just that it doesn't look like a toy that should cost that close to $100, ya know?

When you're a middle-aged dude who has been duped into believing that the best years of your life were when you were 10 and playing with toys all day, $100 is small price to pay for a nostalgia high!

I would say this; the price is good compared to the OG price on ebay. I remember when the first technodrome came out. I'm my area, it was 56 bucks plus tax. I think Playmates is trying to make things affordable to us kidults again while making a lil profit in the process. After all, Playmates main office is in Hong Kong. 80 bucks USD to them is like 10,000 dollars anyway. Now, if the price tag was 56 bucks USD today like it was back then, this purchase would be a no brainer. I think I'm going to purchase this either way. I never got the chance to get the OG one because I was too deep into gaming on the SNES when it came out. Wow! How time flies!

Yeah, when I was a kid the Technodrome was prohibitively expensive. When I got older and started to have some fun money it was still too expensive because by then it was difficult to track down a complete one in good shape with no yellowing. So when I heard the rumor of a re-release I expected it to still be too expensive to justify. After all, we're in the age of $300 sewer lairs, $500 Party Wagons, $500 Mos Eisley Cantinas, etc.

But $80! Wow! I do agree that it's not cheap, and I'm sure these last four years have conditioned us all to some extent to be more and more ok with higher price tags. But it's really nice to not feel like the toy company is out to hurt me personally with their asking price. I'm sick of the boutique brands acting like they're doing us a huge favor by making obscenely priced plastic.

Also, for what it's worth, I bought both the MOTU Origins Castle Greyskull and Snake Mountain for around the same prices and the childlike joy I felt opening a "vintage" package, taking out and assembling a toy I've wanted since I was a kid... that's worth some real money to me, and I still get really happy every time I look at those sets or pose vintage figures in them as though I'm 8 years old again. That's not something I can say about a single NECA or Super7 toy I've bought.

FWIW, $79.99 is also the same as the MSRP of the Mutant Mayhem sewer lair playset. I paid that much for mine and don't regret it at all as that is one fantastic playset and display piece. As is the 'drome.

...

I'm still trying to figure out what's going on with the size of this thing. It's hard to tell from the pictures they put out, but it sorta kinda does feel like maybe it's been shrunk by a hair, but I can't fathom how/why that would be because surely they did not re-sculpt/re-tool this thing...right? Surely it's exactly the same?

I read on the Fwoosh that the base is different and that that is accounting for the difference in height. I've not bothered to compare because honestly, I don't want any reasons to not get this thing. And really, if it's slightly inferior to the vintage one then that's perfectly fine and deserved, as I'll always hold anything vintage as the best there is, even if I don't personally own it.

But why?

I'm pretty sure a Super7 Technodrome will surpass the Playmates original in every way possible, except the price tag.

Exactly....the point isn't "who can make the most accurate Technodrome" (or anything else). It has never been. The point is, who can make the coolest freakin' toy that gives you enough of the feels to buy it.

Fully toon accurate, gigantic Super7 Technodrome requiring a 2nd mortgage definitely gives awesome feels, but comes bundles with a metric crud-load of negative feels cancelling them out.

Technodrome that is affordable and matches that thing you've remembered fondly your entire life on Earth is nothing but positive feels.

At any rate, this is valuable just for anyone trying to complete their OG drome if the parts are all the same size. Have you not seen what individual pieces of the OG go for on eBay these days? If all you were missing were the jail cell bars or a few other bits/stickers, this would probably your cheapest option to pick some up.
