Mobile telephone overuse

Once upon a time, still during the very first years of the 2000's, many people enjoyed socializing. Remember sitting in the garden on a summer evening, having a barbeque party? Or eating in a restaurant on an autumn or winter's evening?

Some years later, circa 2002–2003, thigns began to change. People began to pick up their mobile telephone and check out their SMS. When the smartphone kicked in by the early 2010's, people would use them all the time and check out social media. At the diner table, in the restaurant or sometimes even in the cinema streaming a Netflix series while watching a movie.

Remember the photo albums 20 years ago? You took photographs from vacations, picnics and Christmas, and they became your memories for a lifetime. These days, some people watch more images about other people's vacations than their own.

Then you have the more serious issues. Talking in the mobile telephone while driving became a problem already in the late 1990's, later drivers also began to text and surf the Internet.

Bus drivers not only miss dropping off and picking up passengers at the bus stops, but also endanger the lives of hundreds of passengers inside the bus. Even train drivers use them at work.

People are riding bicycles while using their smartphones, swaying around as if they were drunk and pedestrians walk like zombies on the sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. Smartphone-Zombie became the German Youth Word of the Year 2015.

Parents may be so engulfed with social media that they don't pay attention while their young children are playing close to the railway tracks...

What are your thoughts? I think technology must move forwards, and smartphones are great for an intercontinental flight from London to Sydney or long-distance intercity passenger train ride from Seattle to Boston if you're alone. And if a bus driver surfs the Internet while driving, just take a photo of him or her and e-mail it to the bus company and they will warn or dismiss the driver.

But using them all the time among family, relatives and friends only causes frustration, and using them in traffic only puts other people in danger.

Go back 60 years and it was television that was doing the same thing and making people dumber. And in hindsight they were right. The quality of the content on the internet also went way down once people with phones started to use the internet.

I was there lined up to get an iphone when it first released saying it was the future, I was right, but I didn't count on the consequences of it being the future.

I remember when people saying sitting in front of the TV all day would either ruin your eyes or make you dumber, people used to call TV, "the idiot box." Then before that it was rock music, and before that it was the radio.

Now it's cell phones. Basically every generation will hate on whatever new invention people use the most. Go back to the 1930's and you'll see people hating on "moving pictures" and how movies are "garbage" and what's wrong with a good old fashioned book.

The next thing will be short form audio.

No real, interactive conversations. Just people speaking short, terse phrases back and forth at one another.
