Jennika's mutation as a metaphor for HIV/AIDS

I don't think it's intentional but I've noticed that Jennika's mutation could be interpretated as a metaphor for HIV.

First off, the only known way of contracting HIV aside from sexual intercourse is through blood transfusions or sharing needles when trying to conserve resources when taking drugs. Now, how did Jennika get mutated? That's right a blood tansfusion when getting (what is essentially) a drug. After she is mutated, what happens? Her boyfriend leaves her and his father advices him to stay away, much in the same way one might leave an infected partner to avoid getting the virus yourself. While Jennika isn't going to die from the mutation (although we did get some ominous words about mutation from Lindsey right before she mutated), it is worth noting that most people take the medication against HIV are not in direct danger but still have to face the stigma of carrying the virus, much like how Jennika ends up getting shunned from society for it. And to top it off, the public seems to be worried about the ongoing mutations and fear contact with the mutatants in case it could be contagious, which might mirror some real life misconceptions about HIV.

Again, I don't think it's intentional but it is a possible reading.
