Official SNK Neo Geo Games thread

Here's a thread for anyone that ever played a King of Fighters, Metal Slug or Samurai Shodown game for either nostalgia or updates.

KOF 15 just announced teams 3 and 4 for their DLC. Team 3 will be the Orochi forms of Yashiro, Chris and Shermie. And Team 4 will be Haohmaru, Nakoruru and Darli Dagger all from Samurai Shodown.

KOF 15 will also feature crossplay in 2023.

Samurai Shodown 2019 will also get rollback netcode.

And a new Fatal Fury game has finally been greenlit!!

What a time to be a fan.

I played and beat the last 2 KOF games and enjoyed the hell out of them. Story mode was well done.

Played almost all 2D SNK fighting games.
Their games always had special atmosphere and style to them. Sadly I feel their new 3D entries lacking this atmosphere.

I recall Nintendo magazines (not the most neutral source, of course) bashing SNK Neo Geo for being expensive, and lacking of challenge. For example, the February 1993 issue of the Swedish Nintendo magazine referred to it as For people with more money than brain.

People who were writing that had less brains than money that is for sure.

I've only played a small number of them, but they always intrigued me. Like most people, I couldn't afford a Neo Geo as a kid, so the first time I played any of the games was on various compilations years later. Like, I have SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 for the Wii, and I had a lot of fun with that. And I picked up the King of Fighters: The Orochi Saga compilation for Wii, also, for my wife. But I haven't gotten around to those just yet.

Back in the early-90s I'd just marvel at the screenshots in EGM and other magazines. I remember Samurai Shodown took a bunch of Year-End Awards in 1993 or so. But my own hands-on experience is sadly minimal.

Bringing up EGM and keeping this on topic with SNK games, it reminds me of the time they reviewed the SNES World Heroes, which to be fair was a pretty decent conversion, barring of course, the original's bigger graphics and more detailed music and sound, and EGM gave it a so-so review. By the following month or so, one of the guys from Sunsoft itself complained about the review and went on and on about how faithful it was to the original arcade and how at times 'was better than Street Fighter 2'.

EGM fired back with a long reply too but it was pretty much 'Yes, it was a very faithful recreation of the original Neo Geo arcade game, but World Heroes was a pretty average game, so even if the SNES did an amazing job, an adaptation of an average game is still and average game. Also good luck trying to sell more copies of World Heroes than Street Fighter 2'.

I've never had a Neo Geo nor have I ever known anyone who had one back in the day. I've only been bale to play some of its games through other systems. Like the Wii Virtual Console, for example.

I played soke of the King of Fighters games. Good games that I've always wanted to learn better, but it's hard to find Europeans who play them online. 90% of its players seem to be Mexicans or South Americans. Was the Neo Geo big in that part of the world or something?

Omg. Not just yes but HELL YES. I was still living in Mexico when I first got into Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting. I still remember the long lines for Art of Fighting 2, King of Fighters 94 and Fatal Fury Real Bout.

It's surprising because I've heard games and systems are very expensive in South America due to the protectionist trade policies a lot of those countries have. No idea about Mexico and Central America. And the Neo Geo and its games are ****ing expensive. So it seems like an odd part of the world for them to be so popular at.

Ah no, we're talking arcades here. SNK arcade cabinets were cheaper because rather than buying new cabinets, they just switch the games.

I hadn't even considered that but y'know, that makes so much sense.

Shingo Yabuki will be available soon, followed by Kim Kaphwan and Sylvie Paula Paula. There are at least 2-3 more mystery characters to come. It seems this time they're going for individual characters rather than entire teams.

Surprisingly Najd will also be coming back. I'd imagine the person that designed her will be honored she's making a comeback.

From what I've heard matchmaking is still garbage (people literally can't find matches) and balance was of the wack. SNK addressed the latter by making patch, which descriptions took 54 pages (!!), but not the former. Also, I am surprised that for the team game SNK will release characters one by one.

If I didn't know better they just want it to quietly die or something. Unless next year they will suddenly support it with more content, than this year.

We'll see. I don't know the sales numbers or if that changed anything, but I remember during press released the people behind the game did say they wanted to stretch out the DLC to make it last several years.

King of Fighters XIII is getting a modern console re-release.

As for KOF XV, Kim Kaphwan is coming April 4th, Sylvia Paula Paula is next and Goenitz has been revealed as free DLC just like Rugal was before.

Not on Steam, so I am salty.
