Really sad to this happening. The country at war is one thing, but forcing every single male aged 18-65 to fight against their will is sickening. Especially since:

1. You don't believe what you're doing. Russia is the aggressors here so going to kill Ukraine people and take over their cities makes no sense

2. You have a very high probability of dying and your life being cut short for no reason.

3. If you refuse, you'll either be jailed or beaten up until you're forced to join, or you mysteriously, "disappear."


This is literally Nazi Germany nonsense in the year 2022. If this goes on I can see other countries finally getting involved until Putin is put down

Terrible as it is...but in this case at least much of the inmates would at least be united in a shared cause, I guess.

If too many would-be draftees just end up in prison, now what? They're behind bars. Going to take them out and force them to go fight in Ukraine? Okay, so they play along and go over there and could, theoretically, immediately lay down their arms and again refuse to participate? Far easier said than done, but damn Putin would probably implode.

There was a stage in the war where that would've worked, and it did for many Russians, but that ship has sailed. It's mostly long-range fighting now until they're forced to withdraw ahead of Ukrainian forces, not to mention all the nutsos under orders to shoot anyone who tries to surrender or desert.

Is it really to 65? Like, once you're 35 here in the states you can't even beg your way into the armed forces. But they're drafting 65 year olds in Russia?

I don't think it's 65 but it was certainly some unusually high age, yes. Under normal circumstances that wouldn't be the case but the existing troops have proven to be under-trained, under-equipped and understaffed, which is why the war was in a standstill for so long and is now turning in Ukraine's favor. The strategy basically seems to be that if Putin can draft virtually anyone, he can keep throwing troops into Ukraine until he wins, which doesn't make much sense given that hastily drafted men past their prime probably make far worse soldiers than the younger poorly trained he started with, nor does it magically make the equipment better.
