Outright, no, not always. But death was very real and very present... each battle had real consequences.

I'd respond to all this, but don't want Cipher accusing me of overwriting on this thread.

Well, IDW had "crap", that's about the same level as "damn", or anything censored. (Or I could be wrong, my english is not native, so I can't really feel how much weight those words actually have compared to each other.)
You're right about permanent deaths and consequences in Mirage, I ment the average level of gore and violence, I think last IDW issues are really not that far from mirage. I think about IDW, it's not just about killing characters or not, but they kinda do a "superhero-comic style" of aproach where villains are recurring, instead of the more consequence-heavy Mirage approach, which had no rogues gallery. |

Well the Mirage Turtles always seemed, "depressed" and their world seem much more real as in they weren't always looking for the next big adventure or supervillain to stop. They just lived their lives like ordinary people until something happened.
IDW TMNT is a lot like the 3 cartoons, (Original, 4kids and Nick), in that it feels like an action superhero-y series where the next big bad is always coming up and the Turtles have to stop them. This of course is fine and I like it here and in the cartoons, but it is a stark contrast to Mirage. |

A thought occured to me- we are only seeing glimpses of the actual city take over, and I wonder if that's not intentional. What if Shredder's plan isn't bainwahing and making Leo his lieutenant at all (despite what he told Karai), but rather the whole 'Dark Leo' fiasco (along with the minor attacks on the other factions Leo is involved in) is something to keep the turtles distracted with trying to get Leo back, that his true conquest of the city goes on all around them unhindered? The street gangs fall under thier control with Hun's coup of the purple Dragons, taking away leadership from Angel. And the Savate are ethier beaten or scared into submission, while deals are cut with the mob. This is all part of Shredder's elborate takeover plan, unbenknowst to even Karai, one which forces the rescued leo and the others to flee the Shredder-controlled new york?
Meh, I'm probably just thinking too much.

Guys, what if the mind control didn't work and Leo is just faking it?

That scene has made me wonder... but #25 kinda rules out him faking it since we get a look inside his head when he has a flashback to his parents when seeing Saki and Kitsune together.

He could still have a flashback even if he's faking it. Maybe that was meant to mislead us.
Edit: Oops, unfortunately my idea is probably a fail. I guess "faking it" Leo would not be sending ninjas to kill others.
