So if it's something you've never experienced, you're allowed to be outraged?

Portuguese here, so I can tell you it's a very, very common (and unfortunate) notion among Brazilians that we're somehow responsible for their current status as pretty much a third world country when they should, and have everything they need to, be a first world country. And all because we mined some gold from our colony while we were building the infrastructure for an entire nation and teaching the indigenous children to write and read, among other things. Because that's what colonizers do, they take but they also give quite a lot, too.

Said people conveniently forget - as a late, eminent ambassador and historian once told them - that Brazil has been free from the Portuguese "yoke" for nearly 250 years and done nothing for themselves in all that time save squander everything we left them with. In other words, third world countries will be third world countries because that's all they know how to be, and then turn around and blame the ones who tried - in vain - to civilize them for their misfortunes.

The funny thing is, they're not treating the few natives they have left much better. They keep on destroying the Amazon, for instance. So the irony is astounding.

And tbh it doesn't seem to be just Brazil. It seems to be common all over Latin America for people to vilify the countries that colonised them and blame them for the fact they aren't as rich as Western and Northern Europe, North America and Australia and New Zealand. I don't think it's the majority who thinks like that. Just a few loudmouths online. A Uruguayan once told me that the people in his country who have that kind of mentality tend to belong to the far-left spectrum. Majority of people don't really care.

I could understand African nations and such that only got their independence from Portugal in the 70s having hard feelings for us, but Brazilians?! A country that has been independent for about 200 years by now?

It's as you said in this case too: a vast majority of people in Angola and Mozambique (just to name the two major former African colonies) didn't care either way if they were independent or not, it was a handful of far-left loudmouths who decided they wanted to give it a go and eventually got their wish from another handful of far-left loudmouths (f*ck Mário Soares, that fat jowly crook whose nickname was literally Jowls) who thought it would make for good PR.

How well did it work out? Well... Civil wars between the various factions, overnight poverty because everyone who could and did and was investing in those countries got the hell out, yada, yada, yada. In hindsight, they're much worse off now than when they were colonies. There's a handful of elite crooks who steal from the people to feed their extravagant lifestyles and pretty much everyone else lives in shantytowns or little better. No investment, no construction, nothing apart from China sinking its claws in deeper and the ISIS flavor of the week making inroads into a province in Mozambique with the usual results. There's no law, there's no order, there's no infrastructure built beyond the 70's and the renovation of Angola's capital is stalled.

Places frozen in time, all they have left is the nostalgia of a better yesterday in the minds of those who still remember it and in their popular culture. But it'll never be the same again and they know it, deep down. It's just tragic for every concerned party.

For me personally, even though I never visited the former colonies before or after their independence, my heart breaks when I remember how the Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique had the largest and most diverse number of animals anywhere in Africa - even more than the Serengeti - before 1975, and it had been cut down by 95%-98% by the time their civil war ended because said animals would frequently be shot for bushmeat by the guerrilla fighters.

Swedish sports journalist used to nickname the place Valley of the Indian Woman. I had no idea it was considered racist until the name change last week.

Yeah but the plot is confusing as all hell. Word of advice, time travel and multiverse plots can easily end up a tangled mess of contradiction, so one might not want to combine time travel and the multiverse. Here's a chart were I try to make sense of the nonsense.
