There was more than one reason. If you're interested in this stuff at all, check out a book called Sick Little Monkeys: The Unauthorized Ren & Stimpy Story by Thad Komorowski. It paints a fairly unglamorous picture of the APC saga. It also offers some pretty good insight as to why John K was fired from the show in the 90s too.

If you like that, you should read the whole thing. Gillen's run is amazing.
Also, Billy and Teddy are in the main New Avenger's story and are basically the most powerful superheros in current Marvel continuity. Wiccan is the reality-warping son of the Scarlet witch and the Vision, with all their powers and then some, and Hulkling is Kree-Skrull hybrid royalty.
