Who in the design department has a fetish of putting pants on turtles?

At least Leo don't have his magically glued-on shoulder plates and that sushi rolling mat over his chest. But Raph has nicked 1 of Leo's shoulder plates, no doubt to look edgy and kewl. Still too much junk on them, maybe in the 4th movie we'll get a more traditional look.

Those poor toppers need more paint.

I had absolutely zero hopes after last time anyway, but the fact that these losers can't get a single thing right about anything is infuriating.

I mean how is it even possible to ONLY make bad decisions? I mean, who the f*** is Raphael fisting, with his elbow-length fetish-glove?! (Leo, meanwhile, looking like he just got done fisting someone... what the HELL is going on with HIS right arm?!)

But seriously. Leo's arms and hands look like he just got finished taking a horse's rectal temperature. I'd definitely be curious as to what brought that on.

The awful paint job on those things really highlights the "Shell Abs", too.

If anything they're even more humanoid than the last time. That's awful.

It's convenient that C42's sig pic is at the bottom of Page 1. My wife and I were looking at the picture up top of the cake toppers, and I was able to conveniently scroll between the pic of the "Classic" TMNT at the bottom of the screen and this abomination, and I said, "If you didn't already know, and I told you that both of these pictures were technically of the same thing, you would NEVER believe me in a million years." Other than being green, they have not a single thing in common. Comparing them, the new designs don't even look a thing like "Ninja Turtles", they look like four bodybuilders, painted green, wearing army gear backpacks. I mean their "shells" literally look like they're being held in place by all those straps.

"That's still good enough!" - PD's art department and a million delusional apologists. F*cking trash.

I'm not convinced that's even awesome. Awesome as what, exactly? It's just a jumbled-up, over-designed mess, some army guy with blades stuck to him in a bunch of odd and impractical places.

Maybe as a sub-boss in a video game or something. I mean video game characters are over-designed on purpose. Come to think of it, yeah, I definitely get a "Rejected From Metal Gear Solid V" vibe off of that guy.

Trust me, once you learn photoshop, it a'int hard to "overpaint".

Basically lots of these guys start with a photo, then add "stuff" till it looks different. It's not art.

Some guys use a 3d tool, that, again, takes a bit to master, but definately does a lot of the heavy lifting.

NONE of these guys are sitting down with raw materials and starting from scratch. Once you know how they do it, it's far from impresive.

Short answer? yeah, if you took the same classes, for two years, you couldn't do worse.

And just for fun, here are the original 2014 cake toppers

http://comicsalliance.com/files/2014/03/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Live-Action-Movie-Cake-Toppers.png

The new ones are vaaastly different from the old ones, but also exactly the same somehow.

The whole loin cloth thing is gone, but now they all just wearing pants.

Leo is significantly MORE covered, now both arms are. Minus the chest thing and shoulder pads.

Raph is also more covered now. Pants and one long bicep length glove and a shoulder thing on his left arm, and one lone Michael Jackson glove on his right hand. Full bandana mask remains because reasons. As you can see on the old cake topper image sunglasses weren't there either so they may still be included because that's apparently what makes him cool but rude.

Gimme a break.

Donnie also no longer has a loin cloth thing but now full pants and JUST suspenders, because nerd. Still has glasses or goggles AS WELL AS the ecto goggles on his head. His shell looks considerably bigger and more detailed than the others, indicating that he's still got sh*t all over it. Might just be the angle but I doubt it. He also looks slightly bigger/bulkier because Bay wills it I guess.

Mikey looks mostly the same. Still got the stupid glasses which I assume will mean he's still got the stupid necklace. He's still tying a sweater or jacket around his wait even though he literally still has pants.

There you go. They're mostly different but in a worse way, still retaining all the things they shouldn't.

This is probably definitely how they'll look in the movie.

That looks awesome......but it's not Shredder.

See Mew, the thing Leo is getting at is this: art is about more than just blending up awesome stuff to get more awesome stuff.

I love lobster, and I love Nutella spread, and I love fresh orange juice. I also enjoy brushing my teeth.

Guess what doesn't go together?

Art can be driven by discord, but most often, in the natural world, there's a harmonious balance to living things. When you design said things, for the audience to buy that they exist, you need to understand more than just how the tool works.

This is why young "rockstar" designers in the artworld are RARE, and also why modern art is easy.

The reason I use this sig in particular, is that it's an example of great design. No they don't look like turtles, and yet, you know they are turtles. They're bodies are vastly out of proportion, and yet, it looks plausible and functional some how. GOOD design.

By the third movie they'll be completely covered from neck to foot in black leather body suits, and will have pouches all over them.

Donnie will have an entirely robotic shell. Raphael will carry two large guns with his sais strapped to the bottom of them like bayonets.

At the end of the movie he'll blow Krang away and say "Cowa-mother f*cking-bunga, bitch."

I'm not really surprised by the reactions from those toppers, just no one seems to be happy about the idea of clothing on the Turtles, even though they worn clothing in the comics and cartoons, though for a brief moment when in disguise.

I guess from the filmmaker's eyes, they see the Turtles as naked, and thought putting on clothing would hide there junk, but you never see a bulge on there crotch anyways.

I'd put more of the blame on Bay and the higher ups. I'm sure they're giving him the crappy direction.

I can't prove it, but I swear that I saw one of the designers on reddit say Bay said he wanted the Turtles bigger and bulkier. "Make 'em bigger" or something like that.

even though they worn clothing in the comics and cartoons, though for a brief moment when in disguise.

Yes. A brief moment. For disguise purposes. Or other one off needs.

Their main articles of every day wear being headband masks, elbow pads, knee pads, and assorted accoutrement to hold their weapons when not in use. And, more recently, athletic tape around hands, knees, and feet.

That's the main stuff. Now, can they have little subtle flourishes distinct to each Turtle that shows off a bit of personality? Of course. I've posted what I'd like to see each of them wear elsewhere, and it's nowhere near as extreme as PD Turtles are.

There's a point where it becomes ridiculous and too damn much. Platinum Dunes crossed that line and set fire to it long ago.

"I don't see a problem with giving Superman a jet pack as part of his main look. It's been done before, after all, briefly, in cartoons and such, for silly, toy-based reasons that don't make much sense at all for the character. But why not?"

Because it's stupid is why not. Mutant turtles don't need pants, and contrary to what the idiots scripting these movies say as a way of justification, the Turtles have never expressed any desire to "be human" or "fit in". That's a nonsense excuse the movie people made up to justify their poor decisions.

With every step they take, they get farther from "Ninja Turtles" and closer to "Four Guys Painted Green". Which seems to be what they actually want. It's like the absolute last thing the movie people want to do, is make anything like "TMNT" in its proper form. They just want to do "their take" on it, despite their take being completely ass-backwards and wrong.

Ninja Turtles wearing pants and covered with needless junk = Superman With A Jet Pack. Sure, you can try and justify it. You're just wrong to even try, is all.

Well, reading this thread has definitely not increased my faith in the movie. I think you guys said everything I could ever think of and then some.

But C42... THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH NUTELLA ON LOBSTER. Try it sometime. Make sure the lobster hasn't been refrigerated properly, and that the Nutella is expired.

Consume this delectable culinary delight right as TMNT2 starts. Your body will begin spewing vile fluids from both ends right about the time the Turtles actually show up in their own movie, and an ambulance (or a hearse) will remove you from the theater before you have to suffer the indignity of Michael Bay's Religious War on Comic Book Nerds.

And please for the love of christ tell me that is not Shredder's final design. It's like they WANT to piss us off this much!

There's still valid criticism about the clothing designs and what they will be wearing, which the toppers shows us just fine.

The trailer will give us a better look at the Turtles themselves, texture work, lighting, how well the new gear and accessories are modeled and how well the animation is. And overall how well the cgi melds into the live-action. That's an entirely different topic, but the clothing choice is clear as day.

Just wait for the Trailer that comes with Star Wars. I wouldn't make my final Judgement on god damn poorly painted Cake toppers

I'm hoping it will come out online before Star Wars, got less than 18 days to go :D

I expect will see the Turtles in the trailer for like 10 seconds as April will be in most of it being chased by the Foot ninja's and bumping into Casey

what is this b*******... And why are we yet again getting our first look at the turtles in the form of toys in a sequel to what was considered a financially successful movie instead of actual pictures from the company itself... This is seriously getting ridiculous on platinum dunes and bay co.

It's actually pretty common. The huge franchises seem to have gotten a bit better with it over the past few years, but seeing character designs from low-rent merch is nothing new. I agree, though... in the communication age, there's no reason for it. I wouldn't be shocked if the studios have penalties against licensees for putting out imagery too soon. They sign NDAs for a reason.

Just wait for the Trailer that comes with Star Wars. I wouldn't make my final Judgement on god damn poorly painted Cake toppers
It was almost the same thing on the last film. I think the only thing we saw beforehand was the cheap Halloween mask.

Y'know I'll begin with something (kinda) positive. I've often said that I didn't care for the loin cloth look on the 2014 turtles as it looked too silly on Raphael with a barbarian look with the tassels and Donatello's circuit boards sandwiching his bottom half and they looked especially silly in motion.

If they are intent on covering their lower halfs I'd say pants are the way to go but...I don't know I was kinda hoping they'd be better integrated than this. All these things really do is call attention that it really shouldn't be that way. Maybe it will be better in the actual movie (not likely) but seeing it this way makes me think why they can't just have their belts and pads?

I've long accepted that their builds and proportions would stay more or less the same but given how people felt about those accessories they had an easy job here. Is there really any justification for not doing away with most of it? It's not realistic to have one arm covered in wrappings and the other bare with a glove on the alternate hand nor is it edgy to have one metal shoulder pad. It's the kind of 90s X-treme comic aesthetic that most people hated even then.

Overall though it's hard to get too annoyed about these as like I said I pretty much knew were not going to make any significant changes after all despite all the hope this is some "soft reboot" this is still supposed to be a sequel to the last movie and even if they were inclined to to change it would too expensive to alter their models that much. That being said I've long had a sneaking suspicion that in response to the backlash against the designs of the turtles and Splinter that we'll get a case of oversteer Bebop and Rocksteady will look exactly like they've been yanked out of the 80s animated series. Can you imagine a faithful Bebop and Rocksteady facing off against these monstrosities?

Work all day and look what I miss.

Hm. Well, I'll believe it's actually something legit - and current - when we finally see anything from the film itself. I swear some elements look like unused concept art we'd seen for the first.

I know, it's terrible, but I never minded the Turtles wearing stuff sometimes over the years, it's kind of adorable. :trazz: And little afraid that if this version loses it now they're going to look awkwardly naked. :tlol: Parental outrage will abound after children's repeated questioning about why they are suddenly naked now. :trazz: (I dunno, Jr., maybe they hit the 'roids more and their stuff no longer fits.)

You might be right - on the otherhand, they never really manage to faithfully recreate anything even when that is EXACTLY the intent.

They always want to "filter" it through their personal artistic interpretation.

Like these shots don't exactly fill me with hope.

But, I guess being who they are they at least don't have to worry about it being pinchy in places. lol However, if they're gonna be ninjaing in leather... I suggest sticking to suede. Or, you know, some of the stuff they were wearing originally.

I was thinking about it earlier, & I think I actually figured out what it is (assuming it's not for toy sales or just the sake of flair/being different).

Flexibility. The animators have no idea how to make the TMNT have fluid motion in combat because of the the plastron. It would hinder movement in real life. IDW & Nick make it bend, but that'd look weird as hell in a live action movie (it was foam in the old joints & quite noticeably so). I'm thinking they were like "Man, f*ck this noise, just cover their bottom halves entirely, it'll work out.".

I don't think they do... I think that some suit at Platinum Dunes THINKS that we think they do.

I promise you, this all started when the PD people were flipping through stacks of Mirage comics, looking for "iconic images" to mine for storyboard imagery, and some ignorant fool saw their tails exposed and said, "Wait... WHY are their DICKS out?! Oh, god, is THIS what our kids have been looking at?!" And it all snowballed from there until they were wearing pants.

There's zero chance it went down any other way. Because people really are that dumb. Want proof? Find any article online about TMNT that uses any piece of Mirage artwork, the Comments section will be full of people asking why the Turtles' dicks are out. Every time. If most of the "fans" can't tell it's a tail, then I promise you the PD executives don't, either, and they just don't want to get any phone calls from Midwestern soccer mommies, asking why the Turtles are "naked".

It's all just one big ball of stupid.

Yes, I'm positive this is the reason too, But, they could have solved it in a different way.
For example, change their gait, and reduce the angle of the plastron/carapace to avoid skin - Shell friction.

Pants are the easy way out.

They look better than the first round of toppers that came out with the first film...which I realize isn't saying much, the first round looked liked dilapidated blobs of green plastic; at the very least, these hold some measure, be it small, of resemblance to the characters they are supposed to be.

I wonder if the pants, were just laziness on the part of the figure makers, not wanting to detail the bottom halves, or an indication that maybe they are suiting up in full black, more along the lines of traditional ninja-esque garb.

Do you think the reason these movie Turtles wear pants and loin clothes is because they have humanoid penises? I mean that's probably the only explanation. They have humanoid faces, nostrils and bodies so maybe their reproductive organs are humanoid too for that matter.

No wonder they keep them covered.

Well that is the reason isn't it? I'm afraid to even say this. It's too weird. They even revealed their genitalia unless it's a joke. I have the link to the video:

So I was just made aware of these cake toppers. And as expected, you bunch of babies immediately hated it. Though, that's fine. You're all entitled to your opinion. But you are refusing to see the upside here, and are rushing to **** on these.

Personally, I don't mind these designs. In fact, I really like them. I think its a significant improvement over the designs over the first film. Despite the fact they are STILL wearing clothes (something I'll never be totally okay with in any incarnation).

In the 2014 film, their clothing and accessories didn't make any logical sense for battle. You had Donny with a big mechanical pack which would easily be destroyed, Mikey with his stupid beads, and Raph with his sunglasses, and Leo with huge bulky samurai garb that looked in no way uniform with his brothers far more casual (or in Don's case, far too techy) looking garb.

Those designs were all over the place, and just reeked of trying making the turtles look hip (and highlight their personalities) than attempting to make any logical decisions for a tactical ninja turtle design w/ clothing/battle wear inspired of humans today.

Now while pants on a ninja turtle is weird, I think the cargo pants (torn pants and what look like Gi bottoms for Raph and Mikey)work in this case. It gets rid of those horrible loin cloths, and remedies with problem caused by the plastrons not being designed to cover where their junk would be.

It's a fair trade off, and keeps from having to do a radical redesign.

Overall, they moved from a try-hard trendy look to a tactical, combat ready look. One that seems almost inspired by the Foot from the first film. Some will most certainly see that as a negative, but I think this looks fine.

The only real nitpicks I have his Raph's shoulder pad (never in the history of anything nerdy, has one should pad looked good), and the fact that Donnie has (from the look of these toppers) full on boots. Also, thay Donnie looks to be wearing black as opposed to the neutral gray everyone else has.

I give these designs a 7.5 out of 10, compared to the 2014 designs' low, low 3 out 10. They gave the turtles a more uniform design, which is something that was sorely missing in the first film and is an element we all expect out of a TMNT design.

Oh, everyone who's complaining about Donnie's straps must be going blind. He clearly has those "suspenders" connected by a strap across his chest, just like the last film. And they didn't at all look bad there.

And like in that film, hey serve the purpose of keeping his more pack (which they actually made look more militaristic, and like something that would survive some bumps in battle) up on his back.

It has nothing to do with his pants.

TurtleMikey
12-02-2015, 07:23 AM
And btw..... if the only insult you guys can think of to **** on the inclusion of cargo pants is to compare it to magic Magic Mike (serious, that's the first thing you thought of? That's weird....), then it goes to show these aren't that bad.

And they aren't even all wearing cargo pants. But ffs, if the Turtles are gonna dress like humans, then it should make sense within the context of a warrior/ninja, like the TMNT. And soldiers wear cargo pants.

And like the Foot in TMNT 2014, its meant to invoke the look and silhouette of a traditional ninja, while being more modernized and tactical.

And god damn it, they are not leather. Please get professional help if think they are gonna be wearing leather pants.

Let's be honest.... insult or not, you guys probably wouldn't have read it or read it, and just as easily and willingly forget it since its, as you said, the minority opinion. The room was lost by the simple virtue that I do not agree with the majority here.

Everyone on this board, except me and a select few others, were going to hate these designs no matter what.

Even if they went with traditional designs, and scrapped everything we knew of their design from the first film, the people here STILL would've found a way to bitch about it and/or this film.

98% of this board already had their minds made up about this film (and this incarnation of TMNT period) before the first movie even released.

And as far as my insult goes, that's exactly the people here were acting. Like babies. Like little children who didn't get their way. Which is funny, given that we've probably all have been TMNT fans since we were children.. And thus, know that pretty much every incarnation (in one or multiple ways; usually multiple) has been radically different from the others.

Hell, the 2003 series alone went to 3 or so radical changes over the course of its run, with weird and wacky Turtle designs of its own.

So for this, the newest incarnation w/ changes of its own, to illicit such a childish reaction is just stupid, and deserves to be called what it is.

The TMNT fandom has no ground to stand on with complaints of unnecessary and/or weird changes. And we just look stupid when we make them. We're just as bad as the babies in the Transformers fandom; Transformers being a fanchise has had as many incarnations as this franchise has, with each incarnation being just as different.

I swear, its the most idiotic thing to complain about changes to characters in a franchise that was pretty much built on radical reinvention.

FFS, the original animated series is nothing like the original comic. That series was as different from the comic as the current movie version is from the other versions that fans so desperately wish this was like. Those two included.

That right there proves how dumb it is to complain about changes in TMNT. TMNT is change. Without radical reinvention, it wouldn't be TMNT. And we should be glad that, for one of the rare times in the history of the franchise, we have two versions to enjoy; the current fikk version, and the great Nickelodeon series.

It just makes no sense to complain when they make changes.

It being abysmal is entirely subjective. I could say/feel thag any version not the Next Mutation is abysmal, and I wouldn't be wrong.

It's opinion. And I and everyone here has the right to their opinion. But don't get upset when I point out how idiotic it is to complain about the fact alone that its different than whats come before..... which ALOT of people here are doing.

Forget what it was actually changed to.

Ive seen many here raging JUST because its different.

Yeah, but thats not the take theyre going with. And the designs in the first movie worked against their established take, with the Turtles having assimilated to human culture far more than we've seen before.

That junk they wore in the first movie? Doesn't make sense.

The more tactical, padded gear they have in Half-Shell? That makes sense within that established context.

I read every word, because I find people's opinions educational and informative, or sometimes the comedy equivalent of a small child desperately struggling to pull open a door clearly marked "push." And I wasn't educated or informed today, sadly.

Yeah, I'm not denying the first four seasons of TMNT are damn good television, and just about the best TMNT anything out there. But the later seasons (Fast Forward, Back to the Sewers, etc) are just as much a part of that series, regardless of why those changes.

And I'm sorry, but Cyber Shredder and Feudal Demon Shredder are no less outlandish than what we got in the 2014 movie.

And as far as that toy comment..... of course. That's one of the main reasons FOR the constant reinvention this franchise undergoes. TMNT is all about the mother f-ing toys.

And again, I can't grasp why people act so damn shocked when they make big changes. Toy motivated or not.

Ive seen many here raging JUST because its different.

Where? Show me. I've seen a lot of people complaining because it's worse, but that's not the same as complaining because it's "different". And along with that, stating a preference for the original designs over these ones isn't just complaining because they're "different" no matter how much you want to frame it that way.

These characters have had plenty of subtle redesigns over the years, and they usually go over fine because the core, classic design is left largely intact.

This situation, though? It's like adding cargo pants, sunglasses, and a leather loincloth to Spider-Man's costume. That's objectively worse than his classic design, and it's not being "afraid of change" that would upset people about that.

And it's not "subjective". Bad design is bad design. Those designs are BAD. Whether or not someone wants to overlook that is their own personal choice. But not everything is a matter of opinion. Those designs are poor. I'm sorry, only a goddamn fool would argue otherwise. It's been said, and re-said, explained and extrapolated upon.

People who say the designs are bad have given hundreds of reasons WHY they are bad, since before the first movie, and continue to do so with these "updated" designs.

People who say the designs are good, can only give "I think they are good, and that is my opinion." That's literally the only argument that isn't a complete arms-length ass-extraction. And it's weak and worthless.

"Well, *I* like them." We get it. Means nothing. The designs are bad. If people like them, all that means is that those individuals can't tell good character design from bad design. Congratulations, you may be Rob Liefeld.

You are kinda contradicting yourself there bro - to say everything is a matter of opinion and personal choice, then state that only a fool would think the new designs are good, basically says you are invalidating, and basically writing off anyone else that thinks differently.

If opinion is opinion, and personal choice is just that, then what makes one more valid over the other?

There are design choices for the PD Turtles, that if I were in charge I would NOT have made, absolutely, but to proclaim outright that the designs are bad, and people that like them have no design-sense/taste - is no different in its approach for those that state, fans that dont like the changes, just can't handle change. BOTH proclamations are EQUALLY brash, and dismissive of others, and doesn't do anything to forward a conversation or an actual exchange of ideas.

Not trying to pick on you bro, as I have nothing against you - but there seems to be an overarching theme in these boards in general where people post their opinion, and if others DON'T agree, then clearly there is something wrong with those people. Just seems backwards to me.

But Liefeld is a gazillionaire and we're not, so clearly he's smarter than all of us. Only idiots master basic anatomy before becoming superstar comic book artists. Smart guys swipe a few dozen panels from old issues of Teen Titans and call it a f*cking career.
-----------

Read again more carefully GC: Nowhere do I ever state anything is "just a matter of opinion." That's never been my motto. My motto is, "Some things simply are what they f*cking are, and people's 'opinions' to the contrary are just them spitting in the wind." I think you misread what I was trying to say. No harm done.

But no, saying the TMNT movie designs are bad is NOT an opinion, it's a simple statement of fact. Someone saying they like the designs IS an opinion. And they have a right to it. But it's meaningless and it doesn't change the fact that the designs, from an unbiased, completely OBJECTIVE point of view, are bad. Like the movie itself. People can like the movie. It was still bad. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. The designs are poorly done, and the movie was poorly made.

Put simply - and I've said this before - Opinions don't outweigh Facts. That's the distinction.

Because some things contradict their basic nature.

Anorexic 90lb 4'4" Concave-Chest Hulk is a bad design.

Amish Iron Man is a bad design.

Because there's such a thing as Good Character Design, or Good Clothing/Costume Design, they teach it in schools and it's kind of an accepted thing? It's really not complicated.

Anyone who's taken a class or even owns a beginner's guide book on designing characters for comic books or something to that effect can point out a dozen things about those designs that are infuriating, serve no function, and make no sense. Plenty of people already have and will continue to do so, and I thank those people for investing the energy I simply don't have for this.

But again, Good Character Design (or Clothing/Costume Design) Is An Actual Thing People Go To School To Learn. Thus, it's not a simple matter of opinion. Those designs are something a ten-year-old kid would come up with. Or Rob Liefeld. Just a jumbled mess. There is no argument for why they're good. They are not good. They are demonstrably, provably Not Good.

It's true that the original, "Classic" TMNT designs are so elegant in their simplicity that tweaking or adding anything at all really comes off as needless, arbitrary, and a bad idea. But you can do it. It's been done, it's been tinkered with, to various degrees of success. THESE designs, this mis-matched, patchwork monstrosity of nonsense, is the problem. The fact that everything they're wearing and everything stuck on them is ugly, extraneous, and only there for the dumbest of dumb reasons. Not all TMNT redesigns are bad... but the movie ones sure as sh*t are and that's inarguable.

If something can be supported with facts it is Fact, not Opinion. I'm not sure why people seem to struggle with this, other than, people don't like Facts that go against their Opinions. Tough rocks, that's life.

Yes, I am aware - I went to school for design, and computer graphics, and know that there universally accepted rules. BUT, even in that environment, choices in aesthetic are rooted in personal opinion.

Let's not beat a dead horse, it is what it is.

Because some things contradict their basic nature.

Anorexic 90lb 4'4" Concave-Chest Hulk is a bad design.

A fair point - the designs do contradict their pre-established nature, but by default, it doesn't make them bad, just different.

An Amish Iron Man? Anorexic Hulk? Picturing those in my head made me laugh. You have my thanks.

And I'm not disagreeing with you. As an early supporter of this film series, I will admit now, that the more I look at the Turtles, and the more times I've seen the film, the more I wish they went in completely different directions. This series, and its designs, are SERIOUSLY FLAWED.

The accessories didn't really bother me (extraneous though they may be), except for Donnie's uber-nerd appearance. That was damned insulting.

But putting all four Turtles in pants just brings the utter ridiculousness of the design choices into sharp focus. It looks like April O'Neil's bachelorette party.

No arguments here. Donnie has always been a personal favorite of mine since the OT, but it's like they took every 'NERD/GEEK' stereotype and just vomited all over his PD version. Ya think a guy that was that much into having tech on hand, would make it more streamline and less bulky.

I only like the pants, IF they move to wear like a FULL suit, traditional ninja-esque style for some clandestine part of the film.

Difference is, an "opinion" unsupported by facts is completely worthless to anyone except the person speaking it.

It's a harsh truth, but it is the truth.

"Just my opinion" = probably the three most empty, meaningless, worthless words ever assembled in the entire English language. It means nothing. But to the speaker, it means everything, including that they don't have to actually listen to reason or acknowledge truth.

I mean, I get it, you think people are overreacting to the designs. Well, they're not. But I empathize with you that the discussion may be more than a bit redundant at this point. Still, it's entirely justified all the same, so it's probably not going away anytime soon.

A fair point - the designs do contradict their pre-established nature, but by default, it doesn't make them bad, just different.

I'd argue it does, though. The design should serve and sell the characters and the concept. And the classic look does that -- their short/small size shows they're not adults (Teenage), their overall "look" is a solid blend between turtles and humans (Mutant Turtles), their accessories effectively show you what they are (Ninja) without overwhelming the rest of the design. They've got that kind of elegant simplicity that just always works. It worked in 1984 and it works now.

Besides which, even on a simple practical level... they're ninjas. They're meant to be stealthy, which becomes increasingly hard to buy when they're 7+ foot tall bruisers. Their movement would be somewhat restricted already by their shells and plastron, so it makes sense for them not to wear something like pants or tie random pieces of clothing around their waists in order to move as fluidly and effectively as possible -- all that stuff does is further restrict their movement, which goes against their main function.

I know the dead horse has now been beaten to a fine paste, but there are plenty of well-backed-up, objective reasons why these designs just don't work and were not well thought out.

all great points (no sarcasm), that I agree with. unfortunately, the design team didnt seem to think in that direction, and its really a shame. I did explain it: People who say the designs are bad have actual evidence to support that opinion. People who say the designs are good have nothing BUT that opinion, that they cling to like a life jacket even though it isn't helping anything.

A person can prove the designs are bad. But by contrast, no person can prove they are good, because they are Not Good. That's why the former "opinion" carries so much more weight than the latter. If it's "just" an opinion, with nothing substantial to support it other than, "It's what I think"... then it's worthless. It means nothing. It's nothing but a defensive reaction. It's just something people to say to convince themselves they're not wrong when the entire world seems to disagree with them. "But it can't be wrong, IT'S MY OPINION!" But opinions can be wrong and often are.

That's the point. Nothing against you either buddy but it's a lot simpler than you're making it. I mean, maybe it's just mean to say it out loud, "some opinions are worthless." Okay, maybe it's mean and maybe I'm an asshole for saying it out loud. It's totally the truth, though. Any opinion that's "Just" an opinion has absolutely zero weight and even speaking it aloud is a waste of the listeners' time. Support the "opinion" with facts, or defer to those who can, is how I look at it. "All opinions are equal and valid"... no, that's false. That is an ignorant lie that only invites more ignorance from the mouths of people who actually believe such nonsense.

I hope I've explained it enough to make sense. No hard feelin's, guy.

I'd honestly hold the original TMNT designs up to some of the all-time classics. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man... each of them has been toyed with over the years, but there's a core, essential design in there that has to be adhered to in order to work right. And there's a reason the classic designs have never really been permanently changed or replaced. Timeless always wins in the end. Going for "trendy" or "realistic" redesigns just gives you something that'll look extremely dated in a few years, while the classic always looks good. But you'll always have some arrogant creator/designer who thinks they can do it better. It's like reinventing the wheel.

And some might not agree, but that's why I'm personally hoping for an "Amazing Spider-Man 2" situation with this movie, so they can reboot and someone else can get it right as soon as possible. That is well out of any of our hands, though. :trazz:

You're arguing how clothing on a Turtle ninja isn't functional, and using that as a reason why the design isn't good.

It's called suspension of belief.

If you can buy into the idea of a humanoid, teenage, turtle ninja, there's no reason you can't suspend youre belief just a bit more and buy that (5 feet tall or 6 feet tall), they could perform in pants, or some other type of clothing.

Any arguments about the functionality and stealth abilty of NINJA TURTLES (small or large) are a silly as the person making them.

It's on thing to just not like these designs and/or prefer a previous one. But ffs, many of you do some ridiculous reaching and over-analysis to explain why these designs are 100% factually bad, and why anyone who likes them have **** taste.

And btw....

.....keep on proving that how good (or rather bad) you feel these designs are always boils down to how similar they are to the classic design. Because it always, ALWAYS comes back to "Well the classic designs were....." "Well the classic designs had....." "Well the classic designs didn't have....."

Listen, I just listed a bunch of fairly objective, solid, logical reasons why one design works and the other doesn't. All you have in response is "suspension of disbelief" and insults? C'mon, man. If you want to debate my points, actually debate them. Being this dismissive just tells me you don't have a rebuttal and you know it.

Like Leo said, character design is an actual skill and art form, something that people go to school for and study. So no, we're not "reaching" or "over-analyzing" it. And maybe you don't know or care about that sort of thing, but do you know who should? Filmmakers, producers, and professional designers. Like the people who ordered, approved and/or pinched out these awful designs.

.....keep on proving that how good (or rather bad) you feel these designs are always boils down to how similar they are to the classic design. Because it always, ALWAYS comes back to "Well the classic designs were....." "Well the classic designs had....." "Well the classic designs didn't have....."

Are you being willfully obtuse or do you honestly not grasp what I'm saying? I already explained this. The classic designs are classic for a reason. You can tweak them a bit, but changing them too much just never works. The classic designs completely sell the characters and the concept in a visual sense, something that the BayTurtles designs do not.

You're so desperate to set the narrative as some "fans afraid of change" nonsense that you're ignoring our actual points.

I hope I've explained it enough to make sense. No hard feelin's, guy.

none at all bro. life's too short.

Hey, glad we can agree on that.

And some might not agree, but that's why I'm personally hoping for an "Amazing Spider-Man 2" situation with this movie, so they can reboot and someone else can get it right as soon as possible. That is well out of any of our hands, though. :trazz:

me too.

and yes, I keep wondering if there is a competent director that would take the Turtles in the right direction - and while there are plenty of amazing directors, I would feel better if the one chosen was an actual fan of the source material. does such one exist? none that I know of.

God I love that this exists.

God I also love that the same arguments are being had from the other side with the same ad hominem attacks being thrown around.

Warms the cockles of my heart.

But the movie is like the comics... See April named the Turtles while she was in a lab just like in IDW,Did she? The turtles already had their names on their tanks. I figured they were named by whoever came up with Project Renaissance.

Oh dear. I feel well and truly stupid for having had hope that the design team would respond to fan feedback and "tone it down" at least a tad for the sequel. Stupid Jenna. Stupid, stupid, stupid.....

Nobody behind this suckfest gives a handful of warm crap what the TMNT fanbase thinks. I've said it before and I'll say it again - these movies are made for Bay fans and regular movie-goers who want to switch their brains off and watch shiny things. It is a Michael Bay movie containing all the standard Bayisms, made to appeal to the general public, and it just happens to have the Turtles in it. Bay makes the movies he wants to see - which he's stated himself on several occasions. He doesn't care what anyone else thinks.

Btw, speaking of old arguments, we should start a betting pool on how long it takes for the "Bay's only a producer, it's not his movie!" thing to get trotted out again. :tlol:

Well we've gotta have a bingo tile for "butthurt". One for the circular "opinions" argument that always seems to rear its head. And one for "hater fanboys can't handle change and just want to jerk it to the 1990 movie".

Oh, and we need a bingo tile for one of my faves - the "it's a popcorn flick/kids movie - it doesn't need to make sense!" line. :tlol:

Which then leads to the requirement for the "it made X amount of dollars, therefore it must be good" tile.

goddamn, this bingo thing's a slippery slope, eh wot? :trazz:

In response to the argument about good vs bad design. It's entirely possible.

Sometimes you need to do more than spell it out, some people need pictures to go with the words.

"Nostalgia glasses"

edit: Yeah, I really can't wait until we see B&R, design-reveal apocalypse part 2. I'm not too attached to them though, so I plan to just sit back with the popcorn and see how that goes over.
