10 years ago nobody could have possibly predicted the Marvel movie universe would become what it has become.
Fun fact: Batman: Dark Knight also came out in 2008 and it completely overshadowed Iron Man for a lot of people. Everything was too busy talking about Joker and Heath Ledger's death in real life to care about some random obscure superhero at the time like Iron Man. And here we are in the far flung future of 2018, and now DC movies are a joke while Marvel's C-list Avengers became A-list superheroes in the span of 10 years. Back in 2008 barely anyone knew who Iron Man was. The irony is palpable. |

Awesome movie, I never liked Iron Man before this based on his previous cartoon/video game appearances but the movie nailed it so well that he became one of my favs.
The only thing the movie really messed up with is that myspace reference, in 2008 Facebook was already a hit and becoming more and more popular by day and myspace was only becoming less and less popular every day. That reference felt dated only a year later, let alone 10. If they had used Facebook that'd still be relevant today even if most teens use instagram/snapchat. Quote:
Not true at all, everyone expected the dark knight to be the king of the summer and while it was Iron Man had already become a huge hit like no other Marvel movie before it. It was so big that Marvel Studios announced their Avengers set up not long after thanks to the success. Disney also bought Marvel because they saw how an obscure superhero became an A-lister all because of a good movie. That summer there were plenty of threads over what movie was better The Dark Knight or Iron Man. I know because I debated The Dark Knight was better even if I hadn't seen Iron Man When I finally saw it I finally understood why people liked it so much as it was so fresh, I still thought TDK was better but realized Iron Man was great and it renewed my interest in Marvel completely. |

The mythologies of most of these Super Heroes were laid down in the early 20th century as power fantasies for little kids. That's why they're all exceptional individuals who take matters into their own hands, and that's also why they solve all the world’s problems by doing simple, good deeds, and why they always fight against authoritarianism; i.e. mum & dad telling them to eat their peas. That may come off as neoliberalism in a modern, realistic setting, but I don’t think it was necessarily intentional. The author of the article seems a little bitter that we don’t live in a world where Captain America is more concerned about workers controlling the means of production, and Shield isn’t dragging dissidents into abandoned buildings and plugging them because they complained that 100 ml of toothpaste won’t last an entire year.

I just wish after Infinity War Part 2 comes out, we get back to smaller scale stuff for the main heroes.
I don't know if we'll get a Captain America 4, but if we do, can it not be a massive crossover/mega-event movie? I just want to see him handle something smaller scale, slickly written, and see him go on a freaking date.

I remember watching this for the first time. It was so good and amazingly fresh. I was like “oh a fun well made superhero movie and it’s not Batman or Superman, cool!” Now I’m like “oh another superhero movie.”

After the first Avengers they mentioned how things were going to be "small" scale character movies and it was for the most part but counting Avengers 2 didn't outgross the first and was pummeled by Jurassic World they realized they couldn't just do "more stories" especially when a "single" captain america movie that wouldn't be able to go against Batman V Superman. So yeah instead of making an Avengers 3 to set up a "Marvel Universe Crossover film" called Infinity War we now have Avengers 3 and 4. I'm guessing going forward Avengers will just mean "crossover event" and we'll never have a movie with say the original 5 taking on Kang for example. Besides origin movies all sequels need to have some type of "umph" to get people to go and I'm sure Ant-Man & Wasp will be heavily tied to the continuity instead of being a "stand alone". So far it was the continuity that kept people checking everything Marvel so the strategy has worked but this no doubt will become its Achilles heel just like in comics. |

Kang might be a bad example there, since he IS a time-traveling despot who wants to erase all opposition- in the PAST.
