Kris Marshall is the favourite according to the betting (yes, companies are actually offering bets on this!).

The top ten according to Betfair:

Kris Marshall 8/11
Paterson Joseph 20/21
Jodie Whittaker 7/5
Alexander Vlahos 19/10
David Harewood 7/2
Luke Treadaway 7/2
Mathew Baynton 21/5
Andrew Scott 24/5
Phoebe Waller-Bridge 34/5

You have seen these people in supporting roles on film/tv probably. I had to look some of them up to put a name to the face.
David Harewood is a series regular on supegirl but I'd imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to do SG and then hit the UK for the Doctor stuff... seeing as the UK has a weird shooting schedule for their programs...

I picked up the first reboot season with Eccleston today from the library. What am I in for?

A wild ride is what. Settle down and buckle up for tonal and moral whiplashes during the Moffatt Run, and it's okay to be angry at lost potential. LiketheCultofSkaroWhyWereTheyWasted???

Well, it wasn't the woman we were expecting, but this is great !

Especially considering she was in Broadchurch, which had quite a lot of Doctor Who actors in the cast in it. Including David Tennant.

Kind of a shame to see her as a blonde Doctor; her brown hair is gorgeous. She looks more like Jane Lynch...

You can take a great big breath, drink your own tears and watch it.

Whod've thought that the alien of a species that regularly changes its form to beat death and never learned to control that ability like others of its kind would end up a different gender at some point???

So tell me, what is it about the Doctor that it an irrevocably male role?

And if you're pegging this on SJWs, stop.

"Wahhhhhh."

Seriously, get some new material. You're as bad as Vegita with this.

I'm curious on a female Doctor regardless, should probably watch Dr. Who in the near future. Anyone have a recommendation on which season to start on, unless I'm required to start at the beginning?

100% the begining, meaning episode 1 of the 2005 revival.

Sex change during regeneration have been around for a long while now, it was just a matter of time Doctor would get a canon change since he already did briefly regenerate into a lady in the 1999 spoof special written by Moffat.

To be completely honest I can't even reccomend the show. There are a LOT of bad episodes, more often than good ones.

If you want to commit the hours, than go for it, but Doctor Who is something with diminishing returns.

I think things will be better now that Moffatt's left the writing team. And has been replaced by one of the Broadchurch writers (which is what Jodie Whittaker was also in).

And considering how well-written Broadchurch was, I think it'll be fine/better.

So long as they don't overinflate the Doctor. That was the quintessential problem with the Moffatt run. It made the Doctor too much of a "god".

Moffat needed to go It's a shame Capaldi couldn't get a season without Moffat as head writer.

I kind of feel the same way about Matt Smith. His first season was amazing but steadily went downhill after that. Which is pretty much the reason I still haven't seen any of Capaldi's run.

Guess I'll have to catch up now.

While a female doctor is really cool, I can't stand all the SJW BS that has come out of it because of it. I wish the this had happened a few years ago before the current social atmosphere we're in now.

Capaldi is soooo much better than Smith. He's my favorite nuwho doctor rigjt next to Eccleston. The story quality is a step up as well.

Well, it was a little on the cards, Bill did ask the Doctor why if Galifrey is so enlightened and liberal, why it was "Time Lord" for everyone during this series heh. And we've had Missy for a while. So while I'm uncertain about the casting decision (only for the fact it's not a male actor, Jodie Whittaker certainly has the talent) I'm going to be giving the next series all the chances to prove the naysayers wrong here.
