I'm okay with Star Trek expanding its brand in theory, but in practice, it's usually come at the cost of the original vision and heart. And that's what we've seen with the nuTrek movies JJ Abrams did. And while there has been a lot of good in Discovery, there has also been a lot that wasn't, a lot that was cynically done to make it more mainstream. (And a lot that was just plain stupid.)

I'm cautious, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being hopeful as well.

"Hart will manage the Star Trek global brand strategy to support the content development plans being developed within CBS and under the stewardship of [Alex] Kurtzman."

The whole "25% different" thing is a filthy LIE.

Or at least, it's not a legal edict, it's a creative (and voluntary) one.

No way the Picard show has that level of hate. Or that the only people who like it are Abrams fans.

I wouldn't go that far. Kurtzman specifically compares Star Trek to Star Wars, and how Star Wars is supposedly more accessible for children.

Which is honestly BS. I've got a 7yo and a 4yo who can both tell you who their favorite captains are and which ship is which.

Suck on that, Kurtzman. You don't need to follow the Star Wars money, just be true to Trek.

And how is killing people off every episode and F-words appealing to a pre-9-12 year old demographic?

It seems pretty clear that everyone that has anything to do with Star Trek right now as TPTB look at Abrams as some kind of visionary who "saved" Star Trek, so everything sort of needs to follow that sort of storytelling. Lots of "great destiny" and screaming and everything connected.

Yeah, it's gonna be awhile for the offspring get to watch Voyager. They still only get to see about 1/3 of the episodes from the other five series...

Abrams didn't fvcking save anything. But no, let's all laud him as the man who "saved" Star Trek, Star Wars, and wasted everybody's time for eight years with Lost.

Star Wars is basically fairy tale wrapped in space opera wrapping. Star Trek is more sci-fi, IMO, and as a result it lends itself for more complex stories.

And I want to make a note: I am not saying that kids are too dumb to understand complex storylines, more like people in charge of shows, think that kids are dumb and if you want to make a story "for kids" it should be downright primitive and basic.

Star Wars is based on Eastern culture and movies (Hidden Fortress) and Star Trek is based on Western culture and TV (Wagon Train).

Very different approaches. Both good, both unique.

It doesn't change the fact that SW is structured closely to a fairy tale.
Neither I said that SW being "fairy tale in sci-fi setting" is a bad thing.

Oh, I know. I'm not trying to correct you or argue with you. You make good points about the fairy tale similarity, which is spot on.

That's because SW follows the fairy tale archtypes pretty darn closely- heck, my senior year high school literature class used it as part of our theme of "dark side of man" for the year, and we picked it apart pretty thoroughly. Luke as the "everyman/young hero on journey" archtype, Yoda and Obi Wan as "the sage/wise teacher", etc, etc.... It was the most fun year I ever had in English, as we got to study such classics as Dorian Grey, Dracula, the Grimm fairy tales, Frankenstein, and Jeckle and Hyde. Fun times.

Then some loony parent from another school in our district saw the movie version of Dracula out at the time (this was when Coppala's version had just come out), and got outraged that their kid read it over Christmas (our school read it around Halloween!) and tried to get the book banned, and the entire curriculum for that year removed. She never even read the d@mn book- just the foreward that was written by some lit professor as an interpretation and analysis of it. And the gore and nudity from the movie, of course. She assumed all that crap was actually IN the book. Dumb b**ch....

Writer Walter Mosley quit the Discovery creative team after human resources criticised him using the N-Word (never mind the fact he's black himself)
