I'm surprised it's taken them this long, honestly. Divisive as the franchise/story is, it's the one thing that's been a consistent money-maker for DC over the past decade.

As expected, the Superman fandom are pretty upset by this news.

Man, I'm one of the biggest Superman fans there is, but those people annoy me greatly. If it's not Chris Reeve or JLU Superman, they don't want it.

God forbid WB exploit one of their most profitable recent ventures - the Injustice universe - in one of their most successful avenues - their animated films division. It's one of the last "big" stories they HAVEN'T done yet, so if anything it might be a bit overdue.

I'unno. It's not like I'm eagerly anticipating it - most of DC's animated films in the last ten years have either been "meh" or infuriating, for me, so I can't say I actually look forward to ANY of them - but I'm not whining about its existence, either.

Like yeah, the "Dark Superman" stuff is a bit overdone, but only because so much of it has come out within a relatively short span of time. Compared to the first 50 years where he was literally a one-dimensional goofball character that could only appeal to young children, and then the 80s/90s/00s period where the character was finally given respectability in print but lacked a solid mainstream adaptation to showcase how Superman had "come of age". Like that run of comics is undoubtedly the best presentation the character's ever had in any medium, but most people rely on movies and stuff to learn who these characters are, so they missed that whole thing. And now to the people who make these licensed adaptations, they see the whole "Dark Superman" thing as interesting specifically because it's the polar opposite of the Reeve archetype. But the tonal whiplash is jarring to a lot of people, especially if the Reeve stuff is their preferred take on the character.

But like, they're still just stories. People shouldn't take something clearly labelled as an alternate-universe "What If?" story so personally, just because it goes opposite of the version of the character they liked when they were four. It's not like "Injustice" is mainstream canon or anything, it's an Elseworlds. It's admittedly a pretty cheap and shallow way of turning Superman "bad", but for the purposes of a story that was thrown together to sell a video game, it's fine.

But then, the Superman fandom is full of people who take personal issue with the film "Brightburn" even existing, because it "perverts the Superman mythos" despite the fact that it is very obviously dark satire (and also, a horror movie). So while their passion is somewhat admirable, it's not like they're very reasonable people on a good day.

To be honest I think the positive reaction to Superman & Lois proves people don’t just want the Reeves or JLU versions, they just want a good Superman. Hell, if this is just an adaptation of the first game then the good Superman who comes in to defeat the evil one is pretty much JLU Superman anyway (at least if I remember the game right, it’s been a few years).

I think it’s more that, like you say, dark Superman has been really overdone recently. Injustice, DCEU (at least what it was setting up with Knightmare), the Suicide Squad game. It’s Elseworlds but Injustice is seen/consumed by more people than the canon version these days. Same will be true for the Suicide Squad game next year. At this point good Superman feels more like a novelty, at least in mainstream media, so I get where the complaints are coming from even if this animated movie is just a one off Elseworlds thing (and it will be, it’s a safe bet the Man of Tomorrow version will be back in whatever the next canon animated film is).

Just watch the cutscenes on youtube edited together from both games and you have the movie right there. Considering the games story modes come out to over 3 1/2 hours with all the cutscenes....I really am curious how they'll condense it to a 1 hour and 20 minute movie like most of these are.

Surprised they're not using the same VA's as the injustice games. No Kevin Conroy as Batman? Very odd.

"I'm out."

Or rather, I'll still watch it, but I don't expect much.

More and more in DC animation they seem to move on from Conroy.

I don't like hearing conroy or previous VAs if it's something in a different continuity. I mean did you really want Rob Paulsen to have voiced every Raphael animated show?

He was GA in Smallville

Everyone hated evil Superman until Injustice. Now it's cool for Superman to get mad and kill.

Literally looks like the events prior to the Injustice 1 game, i.e. the worst parts.

I have no desire to see Lois and her pregnant son die.
