I swore they killed him at some point. Shows how much I pay attention.
Sh*t, did I even see the fourth one? ((Checks Wikipedia)) Huh. I did not.

Everybody was in Scream 4 and nobody died in it. Which was an odd choice. Scream 4 is very disappointing... they could have really shook things up (maybe even make Dewey a killer), but they went the safe route.

There was really no place to even go after Scream 3, anyway. Once your pseudo-satirical film series is left poking fun at itself, you know it's time to take it home.
I think only the first one is really an objectively "good movie", the rest of the series is just riffing on the same joke/premise to diminishing returns. I mean, obviously it's because they make money, it's just annoying. "I hope they're still making these in 25 years," said not a single goddamn person when Scream 1 came out. Like back then it would be a joke about a worst-case scenario and how bankrupt the idea people in Hollywood are. Today it's reality. Sad.

I think Scream 1 was sort of a brilliant one-and-done as well. Thing is, the visual is so great and that movie was such a fun memory, that I'd be interested to see someone take a swing at it if they have a really "out there" idea. You have to subvert expectations all over.

Wasn't that kind of the point of the TV series, though? I confess I never watched it. But I swear I'd read that "subverting expectations for the franchise" was more or less the entire reason they made the show in the first place, aside from keeping the name out there.
Like I really do like the first Scream, I think it works on multiple levels and is overall a slick piece of work. I just don't have a lot of respect for "the franchise".

Hey, it's still going strong enough- and is iconic enough- to inspire this guy-

No, I think there was. I mean, they were right to wait as long as they did between Scream 3 and 4... they just didn't do anything with the time gap at all.
Like, in the decade+ between films, one of the survivors could be really screwed up and takes up the ghostface mantle and it's a total surprise at the end of the movie. Quote:

Not the biggest Scream fan but I like them and have seen them all except the tv show. It’s been really long though so I don’t remember details.
Imo making any of the main/hero cast the killer would be extremely predictable and totally out of character for them since they’ve survived 4 times. So I hope they don’t do that. I did have an an idea a long time ago to make the killer an actual ghost/ghoul that when revealed had a face shaped like the mask. Someone told me they did something similar in one of the “I Know what you did last summer” sequels but I only saw the first 2.

I'd sort of like to see Scream re-invented as an Ari Aster level horror film (Hereditary, Midsommar). To play off the expectations of the audience, as the original did, in a way that could blow us away.
That will sound like sacrilege to some, given that the tone of the Scream films is typically nothing like that. But I don't think you can replicate what the first film did with a sequel, which has more or less been proven. Let's go back to subverting expectations- Scream's true claim to fame. Scream fits perfectly in the horror genre, but it's never been truly frightening. Lure us into what looks like a "summer horror film" slasher and switch on the true dread 15 minutes in and destroy the audience. |

I just hope Scream 5 takes more chances than 4. In that 4 took none. I wanted one of the OG characters to be a killer.

Mmmmmmmm.... Neve.....
One of my first dates with my wife was going to see "Scream 3". Neither one of us remembers anything about it except the Carrie Fisher cameo. Skipped 4 entirely. Even 3 seemed very desperate. I really can't believe they're still making these. Smart money says Neve's the killer this time, I bet. Because THAT makes sense. But it'll be "shocking" and they've been trying to talk her into that for like the last two or three and Hollywood never lets a bad idea go to waste. Let me know if I end up being right.

Can kind of relate. I implicitly remember Scream 3 as a date movie with a girl that didn't work out. I wish I could say the movie was a contributing factor... but no. Conversely, I remember an excellent date night with another girl with Scream 2.

In our case, I think our shared feelings of "Well, THAT was a thing that happened, I guess," merely strengthened our bond.
Call me crazy, but I'd rather watch Neve in "Wild Things".

Hah. But certainly not a date movie. Unless you're doing big stuff.

Anything can be a "date movie" when you're a goddamn lunatic.
