Velma: 'Adult' Scooby Doo Prequel Series On HBO Max

Quote:
"Velma": Velma is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. An original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America's most beloved mystery solvers, executive producer Mindy Kaling will voice the titular character. Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein, and Sam Register also serve as executive producers. Velma is produced by Warner Bros. Animation.

Man, they really insist on reinventing Scooby Doo so much. Like I enjoy a new version of SD but they really love to come out with some weird and unnecessary iterations. And an adult themed Scooby Doo spin off? That's just...taking liberties a bit too far. Weirder that they're choosing Velma as opposed to Daphne since she was always "the attractive one" and the most obvious choice.

Thinking about it now, I wonder if the Harley Quinn TV show's success has led to this ludicrous thought process.

I think Velma lends herself more to the "independent woman lead" stereotype, trope, and narrative that a lot of entertainment is leaning into these days.

Also, apparently a lot of people find Velma more attractive?

Velma's seen as the gay one, and several writers, from James Gunn to those behind the Mystery Inc series, intended for her to come out. So that fits current year

I was intrigued enough to watch the Daphne & Velma live-action movie that came out a few years ago, and while I thought it had some charm, I am not interested in a "Scooby Universe" that doesn't feature Scooby-Doo prominently.

If you had a time machine and went back in time to the 80s or before, and you told everyone "Hey, in 30 years we're gonna bring back a bunch of popular kids' characters for the primary intent of making them all gay"... I am reasonably certain that they'd lock you up for a very long time.

Fred's the gayest one out of the bunch, but they won't pull the trigger on him so long as the branding insists he and Daphne are a thing, even if it's patently obvious Daphne has a better chemistry with Shaggy and the last few 80s series established that they were pretty much endgame.

Guys like Shaggy don't get chicks like Daphne, man. C'mon. Chicks like that buy weed from guys like that, and maybe throw them a drunken pity-f*ck exactly once after they've known each other a while. But they never, ever, actually date or settle down with those guys. What idiot wrote that nonsense?

The writers from the 80s era. The chemistry and build-up was right there over the course of three seasons. Those last few Scrappy era shows were legit some of the best Scooby-Doo I've ever watched, only surpassed two decades later by Mystery Inc.

The 'Shaphne' fanbase has been steadily building for a while, and WB have noticed. There's even nods to this pairing in Mystery Inc and Be Cool Scooby-Doo.

Too bad there's no real hints to it in the finale movie for 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, which was the last show to really push it forward. Shaggy and Daph basically end the original franchise with a full family...they live and travel together, have two dogs, an adopted kid. The whole works. It was legit game over by that point.

I’m surprised they haven’t given Scooby Doo the Riverdale treatment yet. It’s practically made for it. Just crank up Mystery Inc by 100.

Why I’m thinking of Velma doing hardcore pr0n. The “adult” part is so unnecessary considering it’s an origin story so she’s gonna be younger/youngest anyway.

I guess it'll be a teen Velma with a fresh mouth before she met the crew? Cause how 'adult' can it be if you're gonna make her a kid? Unless it's one of those where she's oblivious to all the sick adult stuff happening around her. Like keep Kid Velma wholesome, but have her walk past some hookers and crack dealers on the way to the library. *shrugs*

I'm surprised they haven't done an Adult Shaggy one where Scooby is a normal dog, he barely knows the gang and lusts for either Velma or Daphne and then when he gets high as a kite, all the Mystery Inc adventures happen in his mind.

Ah. So, it's an idea put forth by people who have no idea how relationship dynamics work in Real Life. Gotcha.

Seriously. Girls Like That don't f*ck Guys Like That. Unless it's for coke. And I can kinda see that. But even then it's not a "long-term relationship" type of thing, it's a "quid pro quo".

Like, I know Britney Spears married Kevin Federline. But again, that was what you call a "Cocaine Situation". And it didn't last. It was never gonna. Because she's Britney Spears and he's a guy who looks like he cuts grass for a living. Once a girl like that sobers up and realizes that she can f*ck anybody she wants, she sure as sh*t ain't f*cking THAT guy anymore, on account'a he's a f*cking bum.

Shaggy probably gets Daphne good weed, or whatever else she's into. And sure, maybe once in a while she throws him a little something on the sly to say "thanks", because chicks are like that. They're perfectly fine with performing sexual favors for anyone who'll get them drugs, that's all part of being a woman. But trust me, she ain't into him.

I know it's just a cartoon. But I prefer that things have SOME tether to reality or I simply can't take it seriously.

It's literally the only reason to even do the project.

Kaling, who will also serve as executive producer on the show, simply called Velma, is thrilled to be involved. "I'm so excited to be voicing this iconic character!" she says. "Velma will struggle to navigate the pitfalls of high school, her budding sexuality and a serial killer intent on murdering every popular kid in town. Sounds epic, I can't wait!"

With a mindset like that, why aren't HBO Max calling you? That's a good pitch.

Probably because they checked my post history and saw how often I've referred to the entire WB staff as a bunch of crack-smoking chucklef*cks.
