Garbage truck compactor?
How could Shredder survive in garbage truck compactor? (TMNT 1990)
You can see how strong one truck compactor is in this video: http://www.wimp.com/how-strong-is-a-...cks-compactor/ So how can he be a bit damaged, He should have broken bones after that?

Well either the garbage truck compactors from 26 years ago were way weaker than the modern ones or the film makers didn't know how powerful they are... Or they didn't care.

He's a ninja. You ever see those guys that lay on beds of nails without harm? Shredder could probably survive a garbage truck easily.

The real answer: he didn't survive. You don't get to walk away from being crushed in a garbage compactor, chainmail helmet and little arm pads with blades or not.
It was on the SotO "writers" to explain his resurrection, but they didn't even bother trying.

I always took it that he escaped before it actually compacted. They only really show the helmet/kabuto being crushed.
That's how I always thought of it even though they never explained it.

Either that or after getting crushed he was weakened thus explaining why he never fought and only got mutant lackeys. When he mutated he was still weak so when the stuff fell on him it put him down for good. That's what we can say right now. In reality if the 3rd movie hadn't flopped we would've seen a 4th one with Super Shredder. Official information. But it ****ed up so RIP Shredder.

You're really comparing the 2? You can do the same if you want, it's not magic, nor Ninja training, it's all science and everyone can lay on a nail bed without harm, the more nails a bed has the safer it is.

What's more impressive than Shredder surviving is his landing in the truck in the first place. They're designed to be loaded from the rear so a foot or two in either direction and he’d hit the roof of the truck, or the street behind it.
From what I can tell from watching garbage truck videos on YouTube (how I spend my evenings), that thing that Casey turns on wasn’t a compactor, it was a plough designed to push the garbage from the hopper, into the space in the middle of the truck. The actual compactor is just behind the cab and it pushes back into the blade of the plough and bails up the garbage. Casey didn’t turn the compactor on, so there is the remote possibility that Shredder was simply pushed into the truck, and his head wasn’t in his helmet when it got crushed under the plough blade. It’s still a massive cheat because if he landed in the truck from the roof above it, he would be in the hopper, clearly visible in the shot where the plough comes down, and I doubt he would have survived the journey into the truck intact. Maybe in the seconds between the impact and Casey pulling the lever, Shredder managed to crawl into the truck, but that would be pretty impressive considering he just fell fifty feet, spine first onto a steel plate. The only logical explanation is that “only a ninja can kill a ninja.”

Isn't the first time we see Shredder in SotO him arising from garbage/a landfill? i.e.... he absolutely did NOT escape the garbage truck?

Yeah, then he shows up at the scrap yard with a slightly dented helmet and some joke store rubber scars glued onto his face.

I remember in Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze when he arrives at the junkyard challenging Tatsu--one of the Foot soldiers comments "His Face"
Splinter cut his face...but could it have gotten worse from the garbage truck? Later on when he puts his helmet on and demands "Revenge," there are scar marks around his mouth.

The "his face" comment could also be taken to mean that the foot soldiers have never seen him without his face mask before.

The way it should be. Makes him all the more badass & mysterious (though that goes out the window later in the film).

Shredder was planned to die in that garbage truck.
Steve Barron (the director) and Sally Menke (the editor) even vouched for some blood to squirt out of the bottom of the truck, just to add some finality to the scene. |
