I doubt the emoji movie will flop, it should at least recover the investment at the worst. People love emoji. Popeye would've flopped badly, no one cares to see Popeye.

And yet they also know who the Smurfs are thanks to the recent movies? I think the same principle could be applied to Popeye. Who would have appealed to older audiences as well, especially the "kids these days!" groups.

To me, it seems Popeye is known by the general public of all ages like Pink Panther or something while Smurfs is generally known more by those who grew up with in the 80s, it does have have a more dedicated fanbase unlike Popeye though.

I barely know who Popeye and Pink Panther are from a few re-runs but they weren't really popular characters in the 90s either, so when was the last time either of those franchises was relevant? The 80s?

Jester probably introduced Popeye to his son which is why he likes it but besides that I doubt most kids today or even millenials care. I'm sure we can all recognize who he is but that doesn't mean there is interest.

Kids these days my know them as "icons" but not characters.

Do these shows even air on TV anymore? Even most 90's cartoons are unknown to today's kids besides ones based on popular superheroes. What kid of today knows about Swat Kats or Pirates of Dark Water? Or any of those 90's Nick or Disney shows?

I'd say there's more awareness now because of the internet which we didn't have in the 90s, at least not in the way we do now. Especially since many youtubers influence the younger generation are 80s/90s kids and they make videos and memes about old shows which some of the newer generations research on.

But yeah that "icons" thing is true, I mean to me I knew of a bunch of "icons" even if I never saw anything from them.

I think kids would only recognize stuff that has repeated reboots, like Scooby Doo, the DC or Marvel superheroes, TMNT, maybe Looney Tunes if we're pushing it. Because they're always around in some form.

Do kids of today know about Gargoyles, a show from 1995? I think not.

It's on Disney's free streaming the last time I checked. I'm sure at least someone's kids have seen them. But Disney is pretty bad with even getting DVDs out and the follow-up comic was discontinued ( ), so unless they get themselves together and do some kind of reintroduction, I think it's been put to stone for now...

The 1 positive review doesn't sound positive at all.

I know who Popeye is, only because I was a kid in the 90's and Cartoon Network used to air all the old classic cartoons all the time. Same reason I saw all of Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Flintstones, Jetsons, and the original Scooby Doo as a kid.

even if they don't know who popeye is, it shouldn't matter.

so long as the movie is good, and they have good parents who introduce them to the original stuff, he'll gain a whole new fan base.

however, if a kids movie looks bad, like emoji, even kids will be smart enough to avoid it and go see something else. unlike some of us dumb adults who might check it out in the hopes there is SOMETHING salvageable in it just to waste two hours.
