RIP Peter Mayhew actor in the Chewbacca Suit

Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, has died aged 74, his family says.

He passed away at his home in Texas on 30 April with his family by his side, a statement said.

The British-American actor played giant Wookiee warrior Chewbacca in the original trilogy beginning in 1977 as well as later films.

"He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame," his family said.

They said that "the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film".

"The relationships that began then grew into the friends and family that he would love for decades to come."

Mayhew's family did not says what the cause of his death was.

The actor, who was 7ft 2in (2.18m) tall, is survived by his wife Angie and three children.

Well known in name yet his face never was seen. Its unfortunate. Well respected and a legacy left behind for us. It does seem sudden.

Just saw this on the news. It hits pretty hard for me, as I always loved Chewie. He lived in my area, and was actually an occasional customer at our store, though hardly anyone would have known it. Always wanted to get his autograph or picture, but never got the chance. He will be missed.

It’s really eerie that this was reported yesterday because on the flight to my brother’s wedding I was watching The Last Jedi, which is the first film where he didn’t reprise his role. 74 is young to go at this day in age. R.I.P.

But also quite a feat for people with his condition.

Met both him and Baker twice , I found both sour , read plenty of the same kind of experiences on rebelscum site........if they hate meeting fans then they can stay at home. Seems every celeb turns into a saint when they die , same thing will prolly happen when Chevy Chase dies even though its well known hes a jerk.
