View Full Version : "Immaturity"

My mom is VERY controlling. Seriously, on occasion she will see me in my room, minding my own business and playing with my 1980's tmnt (who now have a better shredder figure to face off against, thank you Skabbz) but she'll roll her eyes with disgust at me if she sees me god forbid- playing with my toys.
I'm already 16, so I should have my Learner's license right? So of course I ask my parents to take me tot he DMV. What does mom say? "You can do it, when you've learned some maturity, I mean, you still play with toys!"
Now, correct me if I'm wrong but since when did playing with toys have anything to do with driving? Is it wrong to go ahead and play with stuff I already own? I'm not hurting anyone and for me it's a private thing. Plus it shouldn't be mom's business what I do with my own money so long as it is within legal range. I am in gifted classes and last year I passed with A's and B's. Obviously I'm mature enough to pay attention in class right? I honestly don't see what the problem is.

by the way, you can call me "bob" since Kitsune doesn't really fit in the Kyle's Mom song

Lol! Some parents are just really wierd that way! With that kind of attitude, it sounds like your mom is the one who's immature.

Yeah my parents use to get after me but then they realized that I wasn't listening to them and still did what i wanted with my room. I also graduated from college and I don't care.

Mayhaps you should point out to her that while you're playing with your toys, other kids your age are out doing drugs, getting drunk, doing the matress mambo, etc.

that's what i tell my dad. I said "hey would u rather me be out drinking or smoking?" that shuts them up.

Perhaps your mother is jealous of your free will. I'm guessing that when she was your age, she didn't have all the liberties you did, and she's lashing out in a way only a parent could, other than physical abuse.

To get what you want, as well as what you need, you have to please them. Play with your toys when she's not home. And if she's home all the time, say you're going to do your homework (even though you may have already done it or have none at all--using the school angle when you're a good student works very well) and then play with them. But be sure to close your door. I remember how your brother is, and you don't want him catching you and being a tattle-tale.

Also, I agree with JDavis. It's a very good point. And Ryo as well. It does sound as if your mother is the real immature person in this case.

Mattress Mambo! Man, that's a classic! And I love your avatar!

My mom doesn't seem to mind with me still collecting and playing with toys. She doesn't mind getting me one or letting me have them. But my dad is the one that'll say something. He always says "Aren't you too big for toys?" I tell him, I may be 16, but I'm still a kid at heart, dad. I sometimes try to hide a toy I buy because I'm afraid my dad will say something smart, or tell me I'm wasting my money.

If you're still young at heart, be happy!! I sure am! :)

Buslady and Krow and the others are absolutely correct. You sound like a pretty nice and cool dude to me. Everyone has hobbies, and don't ever let anyone (including your parents) tell you how to live your life or enjoy your life and your hobbies buddy. If there's anything that's totally boring in this world it's sheep who follow the "norm" and do exactly what they're "supposed" to be doing at their age. Doing exactly what people expect of you is stupid. Be your own person, always.

If your parents are giving you a hard time about it, and it sounds like they are, ask them if you can have a serious talk with them about it and tell them that it makes you mad and uncomfortable when they judge you just because of your hobbies. Hopefully, they will listen and be understanding. If this advice doesn't help you out, bro, then maybe you're better off not explaining it to them. But just ignore people who act like that toward you. Take care.

Ha!!

I am 28 and I still sleep with a stuffed animal.

He's a medium sized beanie baby.
He's a red bull, and his name is Snort.

Adults are just big kids. If people kept that in mind, the world would probably be a lot less troublesome.

I think toys are pretty healthy for any person to have. I mean, they are really great stress killers. I can see what angle your mum's coming from though, she sees toys as somthing for 6 or 8 years olds and since your 16 she thinks that's abnormal and probably only wants what's best for you. Unfortunately she probably isn't thinking of the positive aspects to toy collecting. By the sounds of it, toys are only a part of your life, not your life itself. Tell her to get over it. She's holding back your life and she should be encouraging you do get out there by getting your L's.

having a hobby like collecting toys keeps your mind young & fresh, it has nothing to do with maturity

I don't think that's immature to play with toys. I don't collect toys but I still watch Disney movies. Now if that makes me immature I'm immature but that doesn't mean I'll stop.

JDavis makes a very good point. If you are doing well in school, have a healthy social life, get on well with people, stay away from drugs and drink(until you are old enough), then there should be no problem! As long as playing with figures is just a small part of your life and doesn't dominate it, or other areas aren't being neglected, then fine!

If, for example, you had no friends, job and were failing school because you were too busy playing I would see why....but you seem to be doing okay!

My parents have absolutely no problem with me collecting TMNT(although I collect to display, not to play). I'm 19, but I am a member of two drama groups (with two plays coming up soon!), I am in college, I don't drink, smoke or take drugs, and I have a lot of good friends who I go out with regularly. I also have a part time job. Not that I'm trying to boast about all this stuff but my folks know I'm a normal teen who just happens to collect toys.

The whole "immature" thing drives me mad. No-one I know really gives me a hard time over liking T.M.N.T.(It's funny, people are more shocked that I don't drink alcohol then they are by my T.M.N.T liking!) but it irritates me that the class clown who insults people during class, acts like a jerk, gets drunk and sick at parties and is rude to people will not be thought of as immature while us cartoon fans are treated as such.

Awww Midnight, take heart!

Parents are funny people and I should know I am one. Maybe there's another reason she doesn't want you to start your driving, but she's using you're toys as an excuse. Maybe she's just worried for your safety.

Once many many years ago when I was 11 years old and a huge turtle fan I asked my mother if I could study martial arts. She told be that I could not because I was too immature and this ninja turtles thing was a five minute wonder of mine. She said she didn't want to spend out the money on lessons only for me to quit.

Well here I am 25 years of age and although I had to wait until I finished school and college I am now 7th Kyu in Shotokan Karate (Red belt) and still a huge turtles fan. Five minute wonder? pfft!

My parents never yell at me for playing with toys or reading comic books. They get annoyed though if I spend too much time on the computer and/or watching television, which I can see why since I'm known to be the lazy type.

Cool! Who does yer mom drive for?
I think most school bus drivers are kids at heart, so we pick this particular ocupation. When I used to do home/school routes, my kids got me into Pokemon! Then I got my son into it. I think it's hilarious that I try to talk TMNT with students they look at me funny, like I'm not supposed to know about stuff like that.

Ahhh! My friend and I get the same thing from our parents... I don't get bothered by it unless my mom starts trying to bar me from doing something/buying something she can say as many insults as she wants, I don't really care...
but my friend takes it REALLY hard and her parents have her convinced that because she actually does stuff like ENJOY her life through toys, in line skating, etc that she has some kind of mental disease that keeps her at the mentality of a 10 yr old. But it's completely not true, she has a job, a car, college, etc... she is a fully capable adult but all she sees is the BS her parents tell her about how she's immature because she likes toys.... gaaahhh ):

But yeah, as mentioned...the trick I use on my parents is, 'hey would you rather me buy TMNT or heroin?' same arguement that I had for my housemate...'would you rather me have a male housemate who is trustworthy or have a randomly selected roommate who could be into getting drunk all the time and bringing guys into the room at odd hours etc?' :P

Good luck with the situation.... but if it makes you feel any better, I didn't get my liscence until last week! ^_^; And I'm 21!

Haha! Sounds just like my parents!

Although today I was at wal-mart and I was gonna buy Fugitoid, General Mozar, and Silver Snetry but my mom told me to put them back because I've spent too much money on "junk" lately and I should be saving it to buy a car. Bitch.

LOL I am too broke to get any figurines! I spent like $20.00 to order Battle Bike Don from Wal-Mart.com because my walmarts around here wouldn't get them in for awhile because of the blasted resets! Yeah my parents tell me to quit wasting my money and save more on my car payments but I don't listen!

Next to my father, I'm the best driver in the family. I also happen to be the only one who still plays with toys.

I'm 21 years old and I still love my Turtles toys. My parents didn't let that stop me from getting my license the day I turned 16. And it didn't stop my dad from teaching me how to drive standard transmission.

Sorry to hear your mom is being difficult about letting you learn how to drive.

My mom works for my city's Board of Education. She's been in it before I was born as a volunteer in my old elementary school, lunch aide, teacher's aide, bus attendant/lunch server and a bus driver. She got the job a few months ago. My mom has always watched cartoons with my brother and me since we were babies. She still watches cartoons to this day. She was watching "Garbageman" on CN today. But she doesn't like the new TMNT show. She likes the old one. :-?

My mom is well known in my city because many kids remember my mom as their former lunch aide, bus driver, etc. My mom was very nice to the kids, and even talk about cartoons with them. It's weird seeing a kid who is my brother's age (19) remembering my mom as the nice lunch aide or a preschooler whom she currently drives to school.

I WOVE MY MOMMY!

Many of you know that I"m studying to be a preacher some day, and I consider my toys an essential part of my ministry. Thing is, when we play, we are giving our imagination a fine work out. Truth is, my future job, and many others, are dependant upon our imagination. You've all seen my collection in the toy forum, right? Every piece of it I consider to be important to the whole of my ministry.

If she says your not mature, show her how Immature you can be. start taking dumps on her bed, and urinating in her conditioner. and the orange juice. also farting on the bread bag helps. I cant tell you to do much more then that, because it would be illegal.

I don't but you can't keep sugar coating things for the rest of your life. We have a violent nature and I don't think keeping kids from watching cartoons where they have some fighting in it is going to keep them from fighting. Also kids need to have heroes and not the kind that just laugh and sing like Barney either :P
