View Full Version : The preview cover of Decembers TMNT!!??

Those of you who got the new issue of TMNT, after the letters page there's a little pic of the cover of the next issue :o
The guys are all dressed in superhero costumes??
In fact they look a bit like the way Peter described them for the scrapped Next Mutation movie.
You can't tell which turtle is which but not only are they in costumes they seem to have powers as well, one of them seems to have this melting morphing ability, another has electrical powers and one of them is covered with this mesh armour.
I certainly hope they're not going to be like this permenantly, one of the reasons I love the turtles so much is because they don't have super powers, they rely on their speed and fighting ability instead.
I was able to accept the other superhero's in the comic(just about) but to turn the turtles into superheros, I hate that Idea.
Now I guess I just have to wait until the next issue comes out to see what happens, but that preview pic has me worried.

A pedition maybe? I send email to Dan Berger about this. I bet he knows or can Ask Laird what is going on...
Seriously, I doubt Laird would change what he's already written and probably drawn just because a few fans don't like it.
It seems a little... odd that he would give the TMNT super powers. But I'm prepared to stick by and see what he has planned. After all, when he put Karai on the cover, we all thought she'd come back to fight the Turtles, and that didn't happen.

Theres some more info i dig up. Or maybe not info, but the "what the heck is going on here?" part could be a sign of hope. I think that's fom Previews. I found it on one online comic shop.

Yeah, that's quoted from Previews. I still believe it'll just be a gag or temporary. I'll send the hate letters after issue #6 comes out and its permanent. :o

Agreed... It's like the training session Karai held in an eariler epsiode with TMNT look-alikes. These could be something else other than the real TMNT. Or that they are playing a gig for an issue.

dont judge it until your read the issue. who knows what might happen??
personally, i think it would be cool if Laird incoporated the ideas from the scrapped fourth movie proposal, but that's just me....
we'll see.....

I'm still reserving my judgement until I see the content of the book. I'm not looking forward to Super Turtles, and honestly, my faith in Laird has dropped since the Venus incident. We don't have any idea of the circumstances surrounding the cover or the would be acquisition of these new powers. Just "Super-hero Turtles?! What the heck is going on here?!" Doesn't tell us much. Are the powers new mutations? Given by the Utroms? Forced upon them? Part of a new TV show? (Hey, they made Utrom action figures in the comic, I wouldn't put much past them.) One of Mikey's stories?

Maybe they're anti-turtles created to battle the real turtles.
We'll just have to wait and see. Personally I think they've been doing a good job so far. (Okay, other than those pointy ears on Splinter.)

The one in the lower left is Leonardo, the lower right is Raphael, the upper left is MichAELangelo (hehe) and upper right is Donatello.
At least that's how I see it :)

Super turtles would be against all that TMNT origially was. Originally, it was a parody of Ordinary Super hero comics, But when it came poepular, they changed it on purpose to something original.
So if they would have Permanent Super powers, It would go against all that made TMNT diffrent from other comics.

I doubt the Turtles are going to be given superpowers. If they are, it will most likely be only for this issue. If Laid had wanted them to have powers, they probably would have had them from day one. Besides, they're ninjas, not superheroes. Maybe they're just temporary outfits, like the wrestling costumes from the Archie serires. At least that's what they remind me of.

I just finished reading this entire topic, and I for one kinda like the idea of having Super-Turtles. Hey, they could even be turtles from an alternate reality come to help the real boys out in some way.

What I find cool is that this issue will mark the 1-year anniversary of the turtles' return to comics! :twink: Maybe that's why Pete wanted to try something outrageous like this.

Yeah. And Judging from the sold out of issues #1 and #2, It's selling so good that we have nothing to fear... Well anyway it will take months before i get to read those volume 4 ones... about 50 issues of volume 1 left...

Maybe they're not the Turtles at all. Maybe they're actually rabid, knife-wielding monkeys dressed up in turtle costumes. Unlikely, yes. Impossible, no.

Hmm, I remember reading that the turtles were a parody of one of Frank Miller's books. I always figured it was one of his non-superhero books. Don't believe the popular X-Men parody belief by the way.

Fine, I'll let you win, sorta. :P I can see the Daredevil and X-Men parody/influences such as the turtles' teacher/master Splinter and Daredevil's trainer Stick and the turtles being mutants kind of like the X-Men. :D

I'm guessing that Frank Miller's Ronin was a pretty big influence on the first issue. The cover for example:

Yes Miller's Ronin was one influence. Unfortunately I haven't read any of this yet, I'll have to remember to borrow it from my friend.
The Daredevil connection:
1) They share the same origin story, can of radioactive material that hits the blind guy's head, in Miller's "Born Again" and in TMNT Vol 1 #1
2) Daredevil's mentor is called Stick; thus the name Splinter
3) Elektra's ninja clan is called The Hand; thus the The Foot Clan
The X-Men Connection:
1) The TMNT were originally meant to spoof the whole "teen mutant" craze that was rampant at the time, just look at the volume of X-titles being produced.
Eastman and Laird were also trying to spoof the new fad of "dark and gritty" comics. The idea of having Turtles as violent and highly trained ninjas was supposed to be a joke. As it turned out they took it seriously and made an outstanding comic series.

Yeah, Kevin and Peter mention a few of the Daredevil influences in the Behind The Shells video. It's an interesting vid... I recommend it if you want to see behind-the-scenes stuff.

Yeah, I like the part where the little curly haired kid says it at the end of the tape. He looks so cute holding up his Michaelangelo figure! :tgrin:
