View Full Version : Which is the better version of the origin of Splinter?
So which one do you like? The cartoon version where Splinter is a human then mutated into a rat or the comic/movie version where he has always been a rat. I just want to know.

Like I said eairler today the cartoon makes more sence, A rat learning martial arts in a cage is hard to believe. Rats are highly intelligent, and can do more than humans give them credit, but learning martial arts goes beyond what rodents are capable of.

Yeah i started this poll because everyone just kept saying that the comic/movie version was so much better, but i just don't see them voting? I only asked the question because i wanted a majority opinion and so far the majority seems to agree with me. I know there most be more than 1 person who disagrees with me so please start voting. Comic may have more depth, but givin the physics of the 2 realities only the cartoon could happen.
Rats simply don't have the mental capabilities to retain that much knowledge of martial arts

Actually, rats are VERY intelligent. They remember and comprehend and lot more than humans give them credit for. If they weren't so smart, how come they survive so well, even with many people trying to kill them?
Suspending belief for the moment that either situation could actually occur, and based on my brand of logic, I have to vote for the Mirage/movie origin. But I would rather the cartoon origin be true, since there's a lot more variety in stories that way, from a fictional standpoint.

Kali if you read my first post I think I said rats were smarter than human give them credit for.
Yeah they'te smart they can memorise areas and patterns, understand images and scents. But to a degree the rats intelligence is also based in instinct. It understands inviroments so it can escape if hunted, being in a cage owned by humans his need to know how to survive will decrease. A rat will mimic a person but not graps many aspects of what its doing, nor can it mimic certain moves due to its anatomy. The degree of skill the Normal Rat Splinter would need for for the comic origin to be true simply can't exist dfue to the rats renintin capabilities. The instincs to survive would over ride the knowledge he learned reverting more to a primal nature making him forget most of it.

I wouldn't think so deep about it, after all, it might've been kinda ridiculous, but it was aimed to be a parody (the first issue anyways) so the more ridiculous the funnier.
Of course, the tmnt popularity grew and the comic got serious...but still...

I'm siding with the cartoon version on this one. It just made better sense.
Heh, I understand that a pet rat in a cage will not become a ninjutsu master. But obviously the mutagen effected Splinter's mind, and not just his body, giving him the ability to use what he'd absorbed. Like learning to talk. As a baby, we don't have the capablity to communicate very well, but as we grow we learn and are eventually able to speak. And then we read and gain knowledge. Splinter had many books on martial arts, I supect he learned most of it from that.
But the one thing I really did not like about Splinter in the cartoon was how he associated with being a rat. He used to be human, so you think he'd think like a human and associate himself as a human in a rat's body. But in the Shredder is Splintered (I think) Splinter says, "We rats can burrow through anything." I'm probably not making sense on this point, since I never could settle it out in my own mind.

I just thought it was hillarious how in the movie Hamato Yoshi was killed by Shredder, but yet all the damage Splinter recieved was a cut ear. And our fearless master did more damage to shredder than his master.....hmmmm, Yoshi must've been drunk or something, or maybe getting it on with his woman? either way he wouldn't've done much good against the shredster.....

But see, if Shredder had killed Splinter, then the story would be very different. Or maybe Saki just wanted to teach him a lesson. Scar Splinter, since Splinter scared Saki's face. Or maybe the cops were on their way and he couldn't finish it.

Can someone honestly say that Human turning into a rat sounds any more realistic than a Rat learning Ninjitsu? Neither are realistic nor even ment to be. It's TMNT. This goes about the Third time now. The comic origin was changed only because it was too violent for a kiddies cartoon.
There is no point arguing wich is more realistic, if you like the cartoon better than the comics, then you like the kiddies origin. But most of you people haven't even read mirage, atleast more than few issues. I on the other hand have watched more of the cartoon than most of you have.

 sorry, I just couldnt help myself...heh, I like both versions, but I prefer the Archie origin. Yeah, it was based off the cartoon, but the archie one went SO much deeper with his character. He showed a lot of his human characteristics too, and was really...closer to the boys than the cartoon Splinter could ever be. yeah, but all of the kids (almost) that were in love with the turtles and actually know who they are and such are now old enough to watch a rated R movie........so since the audience has grown up, maybe a shot of making the movies grown up?? It'd be interesting to say the least.

I have read all the opinions. And i respect everyone's opinion. I was just thinking that... if we expect too much from the new show we can be disappointed. The new cartoon is very involved. They have to create a cartoon for the kids based on the comic book. When the old cartoon was shown, we all accepted it like it was. Now it's another situation. Every fan is expecting something special from the new show. Of course it is not possible to satisfy all our dreams.
As to Splinter, i like him in the cartoon and in the next mutation. Though there are many people who didn't like the next mutation, i think it was pretty funny. I mean Wick,Dragonlord and this crazy insane hunter Bone Steel.
At least the show was not sad. we could laugh a bit. I didn't like Venus, the monkey and his stupid assistants and these vampires. It was pretty stupid.
As far as i understand(finally  ) there are 3 types of comics: Mirage,Archie and.... i forgot their name. The last stories are very sad. I was really stressed when i read about these worms and Shredder and his mom and etc.
I read only the first issue of Mirage Comics. I guess i'll never be able to put up with the thought that Hamato Yoshi and Splinter are not the same.
And Shredder is a killer. That is why i prefer Splinter from the cartoon.
By the way will this new Splinter be Splinter or Hamato Yoshi(may be they changed the plot). They also say that there will be min 26 episodes and if the show becomes a hit, they will release more. It sounds wonderful but i guess it means that they do not have the final plot and the story. If they are ready to continue the cartoon is case of it's success.
And the last: Who knows whose creation are dragons and this hunter from the next mutation. Are they also from comics? I have never seen either in the cartoon or in comic books

Karpoos right, its not planed to be like the old toon, but If its as action/violent packs as some wnat to believe it may not stay that way, we may like it but to much action and you know some parent with to much time on their hands'll start raising a stink and before you know it parents groups all over the country are attacking it, so lets hope they people in charge are being smart about it.
They want to Kill people in the origin of the show is risky, may be good at first but it could make the show die an ugly death
She has a point. Every one who is hopng for something like the old cartoon, can be dissapointed.
Not just those people, but the people hoping it'll be like the Mirage comics come to life. It won't be. It'll be in it's own catagory of action comedy. Something the kids will enjoy, parents will approve of, and veteran fans will hopefully enjoy as well.
Karpo_007

I knoe that It won't be Mirage, I have accepted that. It will be it's own universe but it seems it will use Mirage Plot pretty close. Of course there are compromises, but I belive it will be ok. It is certain that it is more serious than the old cartoon, but Comedy will surely be there.
I personally hope it Would come close to the First movies feeling. It combined The Original darker TMNT and Comedy and Result was Something that all could enjoy.
The New show will never be Mirage, and It doesn't need to be. Mirage will always be there no matter how the show turns out.
Lanagirl
12-13-2002, 11:15 AM
 Yes,if the show is too serious, those parents can begin complaining. But you know guys, i have never been in America but i respect your laws. There is a good order there. Nobody cares what kids are watching here, in Russia. When i was a little girl, i was read many tales. Only now i begin realising how cruel they are. Here, the saturday morning show can include scenes for grown-up people. Not always of course, but nobody will care or complain. I'm glad that people in Europe and America take a good care about their children. So it's better than russian orders: watch what you want, do what you want and a big majority of kids begin to like violence.
Sorry :goofygri:
I didn't hear that Oroku Nagi will be involved. But if he is, then he will have to die...(according to the plot of Mirage). I remember the interview with creator( or somebody else). he said there would be no any death.

yeah we should all probably stop speculating about what the new cartoon will be like. I don't think any of us should build up our expectations to much. But maybe you should watch your words about wanting to see the turtles back on tv no matter what. Look at the next mutation. I know the new cartoon will not be anything like that but i feel that the show really hurt the turtles for the kids who saw only it.

I think that me punching all of the next mutation lovers hurt them. The turtles can only be hurt in a comic book that people seem to worship more than the show *cant comprehend*

Yeah that show is a shame. If some people know turtles only by it, they probably don't want to watvh the new cartoon. Hopefully that will not happen.

Anybody... ANYBODY who got into the Turtles through TNM needs to be properly instructed PRONTO. Either Mirage or the old cartoon will work fine, doesn't matter.
Back to the original topic (remember that?), although it pains me to say it, I prefer the Mirage version, not so much because of how it portrays Splinter, but how it portrays mutagen as a whole. The cartoon mutagen turns a person into whatever animal they're touching. How could it affect the turtles, the frogs, or all the other creature mutations then? What's the deal? And what about if the mutagen touches someone who isn't touching something? Very confusing. Mirage mutation is simple: it mutates whatever it touches into a more evolved, more intelligent and more powerful version of their original selves. Quick, easy, painless.
PS: we need to think up an abbreviation for the new cartoon soon: calling the old and new cartoons, well, old cartoon and new cartoon is gonna get old fast. TMNT Neo, maybe? *shrug*
