I've been waiting for this to come out forever. It got delayed for a couple months, and the prologue (Re-Animator #0) has still yet to come out. The Evil Dead trilogy and the unfortunately underrated Re-Animator trilogy are some of my absolutel favorite horror movies. Seeing as how the last Re-Animator flick, Beyond Re-Animator, was so disappointing I've been looking forward to a genuinely good and gorey Herbert West story for quite some time.
SPOILERS
It picks up right where the last issue of Army of Darkness left off. Ash gets blamed for all the corpses found at the S-Mart and the cops cart him away...in an Elvis costume. He's deemed looney and gets taken to Arkham Asylum up near Miskatonic University.
Herbert West happens to work there, performing his experiments, and is in cahoots with some old member of the Cult of Cthulhu. The old man lets West use the Necronomicon to improve his re-animation experiments in exchange for giving him access to the Chosen One (Ash) so he might summon the Old Ones to Earth.
The whole issue is mostly a set-up for the series and West is only featured rather briefly. It doesn't seem to follow Re-Animator continuity too well, but then, this is a comic based off the Evil Dead franchise. Nothing ever sincs up quite right.
West seems to be written with a little more emotion than I'd prefer, but for the most part he's depicted very closely to his movie counter-part (at least from what I've read so far).
The series, like the last 2 Army of Darkness minis, introduced some throw-away buddies for Ash to team-up with. I won't be expecting either of them to survive the mini. I was sorta hoping Ash would go it alone this time rather than be saddled with some 2-dimensional sidekicks again.
Overall it was just a set-up so I can't really say it was bad or good. However, being an Evil Dead, Re-Animator and HP Lovecraft fan, I couldn't help but enjoy it.
Also, there were four variant covers. I normally don't fall into the variant cover trap, but I just had to have these two:
