I don't know how many of you are aware of this or not but Season 5 will feature the TMNT 99 years in the future. It's all part of an arc called "Fast Forward". Here are some rumors:

-NYC will be occuppied by numerous alien species
-Cody Jones, Casey's great grandson, will be their new ally
-the TMNT will be working with a group of "kids" to train them to fight
-it will last nearly the ENTIRE 5th season

I'm wondering is anyone else a little concerned that this storyline could cause the series to "Jump the Shark"?

as long as none of the turtles marry, that ugly Dino girl princess doesn't try to marry Mikey, the turtles don't become monsters and suffer..its ok with me

wait "they will train "KIds" uh oh..they had kids?

I like the Future Shark Triology lol Anyways I don't know about this. I don't see the point in it and last time the show shot into the future it got canceled O_O Oh well Future Turtles are awesome so I guess we gota wait and see.

The way you described it.....yeah, i'm afraid this isn't good for the TMNT...

IF they can pull it off, which I htink the writers will be able to do, then It should be cool...

but still.. the idea of a jump into the future doesnt' sit well with me, even if it ISN'T permanent...

still.. where did you find this info? is this even confirmed?

...He is either SERIOUSLY pulling our leg, or this show is finished, it looks like the season finale will be a rehash of "Search For Splinter Part Two" with a twist, instead of being transported through Space, there transported through time. Then, when they return to the present, Karai basiclly is running New York as The Shredder.

I wanna see one or all tmnt with some form of happiness, yes i mean a GIRL! they should be allowed to fall in love.

I'm not pulling anyone's leg. This info has been available for sometime. I've been posting here forever, I wouldn't go and pull a silly troll prank like that.

Here's the description from the official site:

Fall action figure releases:

TMNT: "Fast Forward" - The Turtles are accidentally thrust 99 years into the future where Manhattan Island is a settling point for numerous alien species from all over the galaxy. When the TMNT find themselves thrust into a "dark" future, they must team up with Cody Jones, descendant of the Turtles’ former ally.

An e-mail was sent to Dan Berger from "Cyber Cubed" over at toonzone forums. CC is a VERY reliable source. Here's what CC says that Dan had to say:

"I e-mailed Dan Berger about it, and he said it was pretty much the entire season.

Gah, I hope that doesn't mean we won't see April, Casey, Splinter or any of the other characters for an entire season. That would suck.

The idea of the TMNT stuck in the future isn't exactly thrilling either, especially since the Future TMNT won't even be in most of it. And the "kids" that the TMNT will be training isn't reassuring either. "

I just realized how stupid the name "Fast Forward" Is for a story arc about going into the future is. Shouldn't it be called something else. Fast Forward makes me think we're going back in time....Anyways I believe this is Laird's way of using the new comics in the series.

 I don't know if that will be any good.I mean a few episodes in the future is ok, but an entire season?? Besides it's kinda said to see that Karai won, that may mean our turtles died or where killed. You know Raph went first cause he looks like he would of died first.

Wasn't there an episode already where Don was zapped into a demestion where Karai had won as well and successful killed the turtles?

TheGreenMagic
12-19-2005, 09:39 AM
That was Same As It Never Was or whatever it was called. Don ended up in some cliche "Shredder conquered the world" future and pretty much everyone ended up getting killed one way or another. Ugh.

This Fast Forward stuff does not sound promising, no sir.

Now, FF could be interesting, because if we think even further into the future, there could be way more drama.

In FF, the TMNT train kids, and I bet one's called Zach, so they're obviously interacting with a sort of society, even if it's small. Basically, their "We're all on our own" thinking gets cracked. So, now they come back and need to be back on their own, no society, alone again. This could be Mikey's season.

Anyhow, I see that this could be bad, but it doesn't need to be.

Well... like I said before, I don't like hte idea of a jump into the future, but I have to say that I"m willing to wait and watch this, because I have faith in the writers... We've remarked often that they've very skilled, and that the storyline has improved with each passing season... so there may be a chance that they would be able to pull this off...

Still... when I saw that the info came from toys, I was like.. bah.. then it'll never happen in the show! cuz if i'm not misstaken, the toys sometimes doesn't match the show at all...

Then I saw that Dan confrimed this info, then I was disappointed....

DO you think that the way Zarius described it may make the new series tie in with the upcoming movie? THe movie, as far as I can tell, may be about City At War (inferring from the various speculations made on this forums) and so maybe the TMNT come back to see that Karai have taken over the city, and they have to wage a war against the city in order to make some sort of peace with her?

Turtle Dove

This season 5 might be a downer-if the turtles in the future died and their children or new kids took over in honor of the turtles.

I mean present can change future at anytime, what if it results to having to kill Karai in order to protect the turtles in the future?

I for one like time travel, I recently bought the Back to the Future Trilogy, my favorite TMNT comic arc is Future Shark. I have Future TMNT in my "Action Figure Play," but....I dunna....I like my TMNT in their own time, a couple time hoping episodes here an there, cool, but a whole season...yikes...

The whole Turtles in the future thing is intrestin'. I probably wouldn't wanna watch a whole season of the TMNT in the future. It would get really old really fast. I just hope the writers know what they're in for and they don't bore the fans. If this doesn't last a whole season, then it should be at least a five episode story arc IMHO.

I bet one's called Zach

Ok possible characters...we know there's Cody (I SOO want his action figure)..but the kids...lemme guess their names:

Zach
Dask
Kala
Shadow

Booya! :P

Since there are aliens it would be interesting to see a Protoceratops (Ceri) or even an alien fox (Ninjara!) or lizard (Mona Lisa) or a talking orange kitty or a bunch of talking orange kitties (ok I've watched WAY too much Kim Possible :P).

Either way this is all speculation over something that won't happen till fall 2006. :P

Gonna quote myself from another thread ('cuz I'm lazy & have carpal tunnel problems):

Several sci-fi and fantasy shows and series have taken the 'time leap' route in trying to bring back newness and vitality when they feel they've exhausted all the good stories. This tactic is doomed to failure because 1) you're killing off most of the fictional universe that you've built and that the fans loved, and 2) you really can't do anything in the new "reset" universe that you couldn't do in the original universe, so you're just dragging your writing problems along with you.

"Xena" was a great show... until the [25 year] time leap, which the writers deemed necessary to rid Xena of the burden of a toddler, who they thought was cramping her Warrior Princess style. By the end, they decided that the most dignified thing to do was kill off Xena, permanently, with a mess of arrows and decapitation. I guess you could write it off as a "greek tragedy," if you really wanted to, but the real tragedy is the death of a show due to shortsightedness.

"seaQuest DSV" did the time leap too, and that was pretty much the end of that.

However, TMNT is different... well I would hope anyway. The franchise has already gone in so many directions-- forward, backward, away from the home planet, etc-- that maybe they know more about what they're doing. Maybe they've got a plan. That's all they really need to keep it going; it's what those who failed in the 'time leap' were lacking. Anyway, how can you write Leo for years and not understand the value of a plan?! :P

It does sound to me like this 99-year leap spoiler is more of a thought-out plan than a desperate attempt to rescue a dying series. That, at least, is promising.

I hope that doesn't mean we won't see April, Casey, Splinter or any of the other characters for an entire season. That would suck.

A big time jump effectively destroys the collection of established characters. Any characters who are not dead will, with few exceptions, be very old, and other characters may be represented by their descendents, such as Cody. It sounds like only the TMNT wil be there. If that's true, then the writers may have to get really creative with flashbacks and other tricks (recordings, holograms, visions, whatever) if they want to include the rest of the gang we know and love.

On the other hand, maybe Mrs. Morrison's cat's offispring will worship Raphael. ;) [/obscure Red Dwarf reference]

The idea of the TMNT stuck in the future isn't exactly thrilling either, especially since the Future TMNT won't even be in most of it.
They will be in some of it? :-?

Edit: Jeepers I sound like even more of a knowitall than usual in this post. Someone please cut me down.

Oh...:o This...sounds bad. I mean it could work but I dunno it sounds like they are grasping at straws. I mean didn't we already do time travel (we had Renet and Ultimate Draco) why push that card even more? It sounds like they are going "ugh...it's getting boring let's do time travel!". I mean in some shows it worked but in others they just stuck that in there just for a boost.

I don't believe it's losing it's edge. What they have right now works. Why ruin that? :|

*shrugs* Eh. Whatever floats their boat I guess

I depends on what happens and how long it'll last for. With 'Turtles in Space', that lasted for about 5 episodes. Maybe this will be another fiver? :-? But if it's going to last for the whole series, maybe the turtles get sent back from the future, but some guys that are tailing them follow them and so on. To me this sounds a two-way possibility - one way going on the right track, the other heading for a cliff. But I'm sure they will pull it off :)

Hey, whatever works. TMNT has been good, IMO at taking whack concepts and spinning them into gold--or something worthwhile. Yes, I do not like the concept of time travel. That whole premise sounds screwy to me. Then again, I do not like the concept of magic. And yet, the show has taken so much of what I normally find irritating and makes it highly enjoyable.

I will wait until I've seen the new season. Right now, I think the series is in its prime, the writing has been great this season, and I trust the people who are making this show. It will jump the shark when it jumps the shark.

I kinda worried too.
Although pretty much everything have been working fairly well (the minuses come from the repetitiveness of Shredder's return), I really wonder how the writer will it off this time.
Children?
TMNT training them?
Hmm... I sincerely hope those kids won't be stealing the TMNT's spotlight... unless they are interesting and have enough depth to get our attention.

The possibilty of no April, no Splinter and no Casey is a real bummer, but we've lived through a few EPs without them, so I guess a story-arc (or *gulp* the whole season) without them can still be bearable. It's just that I really got attached to April. :P

Personally, I can't wait to see that season!

I think your all worried it's going to turn into the new comic book and fail....I don't think peter would totally do that and think it would move allot faster animated wouldn't it....?
I have hopes for this so for once I'm going to dissagree with you guys and say this will be allot of fun....man if anyone else is like me let's start begging peter to please bring his character Armagon into this show man that would be sooooooo awsome.
Also I like the idea of them training kids because they did in the archie series as well. I would love to see the tmnt fight zombies and stuff like they did in the acrhie series.I hope future don wears that robe peter so often draws him wearing that would be great to get a toy of that....seriously the best future turtles by far has been archie so I hope he atleast takes something from it!
btw for the person that mentioned splinter he was listed as one of the characters for that toy line so I dount they wouldn't have him in the show.

For those of you interested, I have corresponded with Dan Berger, the official Ninja Turtles media officer, who has had this to say following my critique on the potential pitfalls of time travel related story arcs with the TMNT:

It's not a rumor, most of that info is posted on our "E-mail Us" page - although I haven't heard anything about the Turtles training kids to help them fight. It will be 26 episodes long - so it's the full season.

There's no dearth of ideas, I assure you. You have valid points why the direction could be bad, but I suggest waiting to see the episodes before judging it.

The entire season has been written and is in production, so there's no going back from here - let's have faith that Lloyd, Peter and the writing crew won't be "jumping the shark" in season five - they've all done a great job thus far.

Ack, the fact that the entire season will be set in the future sounds like the TMNT is in grave danger!! In addition to the points that Iris made (which I think were very accurate and insightful), time travel introduces many plot holes because due to the fact that anyone can time travel at any point, means that history can be erased and re-written numerous times, resulting in many "alternate futures" and "alternate pasts".

For example, the Shredder could travel back in time to kill the Turtles before they mutated to prevent them from becoming the heroes they've become. Then the Splinter could go back in time, and kill Ch'rell's Utrom parents before he was born to prevent the Shredder from committing his crimes. Then Ch'rell's Utrom parents could go back and destroy the Utrom race at their conception, who could in turn go back and destroy the very first organism that evolved, making it that life never existed in the first place. Can you see where I'm coming from? Time travel is ALWAYS asking for trouble...

Just because it's interesting now doesn't mean that they can't make mistakes. And I have to agree with the general populace on this one that the time travel story arc is shaping up to be a mistake of monumental proportions.

Don't get me wrong - I love the TMNT and want it to succeed, but this is without a doubt going to be a make-or-break decision by the writers... If they screw it, that's going to be the end of TMNT as we know it...

Thanks for posting your correspondence, Allo.

Ack, the fact that the entire season will be set in the future sounds like the TMNT is in grave danger!!
I see no reason to jump to that conclusion. If, as Dan kindly informed, the entire season really has been written, there shouldn't be any huge plot holes. Moreover, there should hopefully be some kind of overarching point to changing the setting(s).

Earlier, I mentioned cases where the motive was faulty and the solution of leaping into the future did not fit, so the show sunk like a leaky boat that was painted instead of patched. I don't personally think TMNT is a leaky boat. :p So maybe in the case of TMNT the writers simply have stories they want to tell in the new setting. Done with a little care and foresight, that could work out. There could be Karai tie-ins for example, and that would be cool.

At this moment, having seen no examples of the work we're discussing, what it probably comes down to is how much you trust the Laird. The franchise does have a bit of experience with time travel and the like, so maybe he knows something about creating workable stories out of it.

In addition to the points that Iris made (which I think were very accurate and insightful), time travel introduces many plot holes because due to the fact that anyone can time travel at any point, means that history can be erased and re-written numerous times, resulting in many "alternate futures" and "alternate pasts".
Alternate universes and rewritten history can be fun to watch. :) One of my favorite things about sci-fi and fantasy is you really never know what's going to happen. You know... 'Hey, Mikey, didn't you die a few minutes ago? Oh, my bad. That was just to make Donnie go postal.' Like Schrödinger's cat, Mikey is both dead and alive. There's no need to create paradoxes or account for the butterfly effect in every story. And although it would be interesting, they might not tie in SAINW references. (Sorry if this sounds like incoherent babbling.)

It really scares me how some people could have little faith in Laird, Lloyd, and the writting team. C'mon, look at all the many many great episodes wev'e had in the past. I trust the writting team because this time traveling thing could have great possibilities, and open up great storylines. Plus, this season could have some great dark tones and gritty battles.

Besides, if any team of writters can do a time travel storyline, it's this one. It's like, one little change in direction and you people are acting as if it's the end of the turtles as we know it.

No it's not that at all. It's just that such a drastic change in series direction usually results in the phenomenon known as "jumping the shark". Whenever a show decides to take such a drastic change of direction, it's perfectly healthy to be skeptical. Especially if you care about the show itself.

iris
12-21-2005, 05:26 PM
IMO, the phrase "jumped the shark" is over-applied. The phrase really means that a good show has lost sight of its personality and perhaps done something out of line (such as having the Fonz jump over a shark on waterskis), and from then on the show goes downhill. I wonder about how they're going to pull this "Fast Forward" off, but I don't think TMNT is in danger of losing its way and "jumping the shark" based solely on this change.

ZariusTwo
12-21-2005, 05:33 PM
DO you think that the way Zarius described it may make the new series tie in with the upcoming movie? It would be a good concept, without the Turtles around, how does this dystopian future come around if the Foot have been running things? Maybe even going as far as control politics later? Influence world leaders? What if the Turtles defeating Karai ends the future they will be a part of next season?

Time travel... makes me twitch a little bit. Especially since I wish there was a little less scifi stuff in TMNT anyway. But still I enjoy the show; the writers have done good things so far. That sounds like a cool idea for TMNT series. Sounds as cool as the Alternate Future Episode set in 30 years.

I really don't like the idea of this taking place all season long. What about all the characters that have showed up over the course of three seasons. With the exception of the Utroms who else can really show up?

I'm not saying it will be bad but I would rather have a Renet arc with the Turtles going to different timelines and this future being one of them.

Allo
12-25-2005, 12:01 AM
Another thing that bothers me is that time travel inevitably means incorporation of technology into the story line. To be honest, I've always loved the ninja turtles focusing on their fighting ability, not their ability to use machines to destroy other machines.

Even the battle with Shredder in Exodus really didn't involve very much use of martial arts at all, considering Shredder wasn't fighting as himself but instead with a giant robot. I would rather watch two warriors facing of in combat armed with nothing but their fighting prowess, than see a battle between two mechanoids trying to take each other apart, seeing who has the more powerful weaponary (especially when it's combined with magic spells and time scepters, etc.)

I mean, come on, the title of the series is Teenage Mutant NINJA Turtles. Where has the Ninjitsu gone?

ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael
12-25-2005, 12:37 AM
The ninjitsu is still there, but you gotta remeber, as long as the FCC countinue their reign of terror, The turtles wont be shedding human blood, well, at least not an offensive amount. After all, to most of the public, TMNT is conisdered "for kids"

12-25-2005, 05:05 PM
I think you guys should definitly give this a chance. I love when writers have the balls to make drastic changes to shows. People need to realize that this show is more of a serial than an everyday cartoon. The show is just one continuously flowing story, and no story stays the same forever, so I think by making changes, such as with Leo's character, it shows growth in the series.I welcome the change, because it sounds like a very creative, interesting venture. If someone doesn't like it, then simply stop watching it. Easy as that.

And with the kids, maybe they are training some sort of resistance force or something. I don't know. I do know that Peter Laird (or someone up there, as I can't remember exactly who) has said in one of the letters pages or something that over the course of the next two seasons, the show is going to drastically change. To me, this could only mean that it will become alot darker, as it has already started on that path. Also, if it IS to be an entire season long, then that will be pretty cool. I mean right now there is a thread that is about if SAINW had more to it, and now, they will have more time and room to explain just about everything. Basically the story they are getting at won't feel rushed at all. So, personally, I am looking forward to this. Maybe someday, it will have to be moved off of Fox and onto Adult Swim or something. That would be pretty kickass.

If it were to move to Adult Swim would be the greatest thing in the world. Not only will it finally be able to go balls to the walls and show blood and profanity, but I can finally stop watching 4 Kids TV.

It might be great... for those of you with cable TV. :trazz:

And while I wish they could show, say... red lines for cuts, I don't want gore and blood spatter and stuff. It always looks out-of-place when animated. But even as-is... anyone who thinks this show is for kids is fooling themselves. Keep it clean and on Fox... but it definitely should be given more than the "stupid kiddy show" treatment. I turn on 4KidsTV, watch TMNT, then turn it off because the rest of their programming is trash. This show is the only thing I watch on TV anymore...

Amen, sistah. ;)

I don't got easy access to cable, and TMNT is the only show I consistently remember to watch.

TMNT is clearly one of those things made to be enjoyed as much by its creators as by the "target audience". Really I think if I were a little kid I'd think the action and aliens and samurai bunnies and jack like that were cool, but I'd be be totally lost on many subtle plot points.

Yeah, a little blood has its place for the sake of theatrics, but I'm not particularly interested in cartoon gore. IMO, it's more interesting to watch them build up a hidden body count through the episode than to actually see people die.

Having to watch 4Kids TV isn't exactly the thrill of my life, but on the plus side there's less chance of TMNT getting the ratings ax when it's 100 fold better than anything else they could put in that time slot.

Hmmmm, better to err on the side of caution, methinks. I'll e-mail him tomorrow, and see what he says about it. And I can post what I printed OUT about it here, IF anyone here would LIKE me to. I'd be MORE than happy to oblige.;)

I think that it's healthy for us to be worried. If season 5 is a mistake then we may not see a sesason 6. (I might be off...is season 5 "Fast Forward" or is it 6?) I mean look at Spider-man: Unlimited. It took Spidey out of his element, put him in some strange new world and it lasted a whole season. I just don't want it to happen to the TMNT. I like where the writers have gone and they may have the talent to actually make this jaunt into the future work, but I stil have my doubts, is that so wrong?

ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael
12-29-2005, 07:31 PM
It's perfectly logical to worry a bit, deep down I'm a little skeptical. But I know if theres any team that could pull off a storyline like this, it's the TMNT crew.

IceFlash78
12-29-2005, 07:31 PM
I actually liked Spiderman Unlimited cuz it was a different take on Spiderman. I mean, I will always love the original Spiderman: the Animated Series, but i thought Unlimited was interesting because it was so different from its usual elements

So I'm kinda looking forward to season five, seeing how different it'll be.

Also, I'm thinking that this season might be great for Donatello. Anarky, i think, mentioned how it might be a huge character development for Mikey, but I think there's also potential for Donatello as well...

Because of SAINW, Donnie may be affected the most by this future situation, and he might be able to adapt quickly to the future's technologies (if any), or if the future is a barren wasteland, Donnie could whip up some technologies to aid the kids in their fight. This might be the season we see Donnie develop some strong leadership characteristics?

I just don't really like the fact that the TMNT are going to have to train kids. why can't they train say... a group of freedom fighters, or a group of adults. when you say you're training a group of kids, it just sounds I dunno... cheesy.:ohwell:

iris
12-29-2005, 08:43 PM
"Fast Forward" really would create a bit of a Donny playground, wouldn't it? :)

We haven't seen yet what the kids will be like. The TMNT themselves qualify as a group of kids, and they often act like it.

About "worrying"... I agree with Jester and ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael. I think most people are just uncertain. The show's been great so far, and I trust the creative team to continue doing their best work, but the fact is they are taking a risk. It's kinda like watching a dad toss his baby into the air to make the her laugh and smile.

I'm actually not too worried. Throughout the seasons, I've had reservations when I've heard what's coming....and the ONLY time I have been disapointed is with The Ancient One. Everything else always blows me away completely...TMNT is the ONLY series I own on DVD because of this...it's just continually fantastic no matter what direction they take it in. So, a season or so ago...yeah, I would've been worried about this future arc... but the fact that they ARE taking an entire season with it actually is very reassuring for me. That means they're not just going to rush it with crap...they're going to take their time and seriously develop it. I love that the arcs tend to be so long and interconnected so I'm really looking forward to this. I've been missing the arc thing this current season :/ I was hoping we'd get deep into Bishop stuff but he's been kinda hanging by the wayside as the one-shots go on.

I have never supported that "dont' like, dont' watch it" bollocks, missing an episode means you can't know if its' returned to the show that person watched, and therfore wont' catch up, its' a ridiculous resort, no fan should tell another to stop watching if they dislike it, I disliked half of season two, and did'nt stop watching.

Why is anyone worried? Even if Season 5 sucks complete ass that doesn't mean the show won't be making money. It's already made a Billion you think their going to stop? The movie is there to bail it out if it sucks to bad. The Merch cash alone from the movie will keep the Turtles nice and secure.

Let's look to example, Jason movies have sucked for how long now, yet they keep making them. Why? Because it's profitable even if they only target hardcore slasher fans because the auidence is big enough still.

Let's use another example, in my opinion Simpsons has sucked for awhile now, yet they keep making it. Now this is due to two things. The fans won't stop watching just because the show isn't that good and the creator has lots of money. It's the same case for TMNT. We fans won't stop watching and Laird has money. Now I'm not saying TMNT is as big as Simpsons but jesus we don't need to worry so much. The first series ran for almost 10 years and the new one has been on for barely 3. I think TMNT is doing just fine.

Though how fast it's moving is amazing. The first series had 194 episodes and this show is almost at 100 after only 3 years. And in my opinion the new show is alot better. Oh well like I said let's sit and wait it'll be alright.

I agree that the show is safe to stay on the air. It's also unlikely that it will "suck ass." But maybe people want the show to continue to be a kick-ass show that they love, not just an OK show that gets by on merchandising. Maybe it's a matter of pride, and maybe it's a little foolish... but it's also a natural reaction. :P

Actually, I don't like carnage as an overpowering motif (one reason why I didn't like the Matrix movies as much as I should have:sweatdro: ), just a touch of realism--to help strengthen a scene. Hmm... beware of the clones. It is very tough to do them right, because most have done it wrong, simply adding clones willy-nilly to a franchise. They usually drag stories through the mud for insufferable periods of time, or become mary sue creatures... Unless they have a distinct purpose, I hope we never see clones in this series.

I'm kind of hoping they do what was done in the Archie series and actually have the Future Ninja Turtles be the ones who bring their teenaged selves into the future. That would ultimately make better sense to me because perhaps in the distant future the turtles will be far too old to take on the forces of evil by themselves.
