View Full Version : What annoyed you most on the old toon?

though we all love it, the old TMNT toon was flawed, raph was a smartass instead of a badass, don was too nerdy, and mike was overdone, but the thing that bothered me most was the episode where leo was afraid of snakes.
What bugged you the most?

I always liked that ep. It went to show our fearless leader had his own character flaws.
The only thing that ever pissed me off was the way they made the Neutrinos act like rejects from a Happy Days episode. Grantid it was a cool concept to have characters like that, but they got really annoying around the third season. I was glad when they tuned it down with the '50s lingo when they appeared in 1993.

The "Snakes Alive" episode was kinda dumb. Leo afraid?! That's such crap. He's not afraid of anything! He's Mr. Perfect! :D
I also disliked Leo's voice change. It was whiny and strange. I loved that deeper sexy voice he used to have in earlier episodes. *drool*
The animation got a little sloppier later on too. It wasn't as awesome as it was in the first seasons. They made up for it though with Red Sky's animation.
Removing Mike's Nunchakus
Fighting was removed and replaced with slap stick. ugh..
Irma, Burne & Vernon were very annoying. LOL!

The lack of Imagination in the writer department. Well to put it simple, They used same plot over and over again. Of course this didn't bother me as a kid, But now that I have watched the show again, It really does. Well there are of course the few great David Wise eps here and there, But most of the episodes were just repeating.
The goofines. The first season had a dark and cool feeling in it, And lot of action too, but that changed during the second season and forth. The action was replaced by lapstick humour, and so many writers were doing the show that there wasn't continuity.
But the Redsky is really diffrent from the rest of the series. It has good animation, lots of action and continuity.

The Ninja Turtles cartoon is my baby. I mean, that's the thing that got me started on my whole Ninja Turtles kick. So I don't think there were many flaws to it.
The only thing that I don't remember too fondly about it - and maybe this is a flaw for me - was the fact that the writers took everything that made the show and threw it out the window.
They took out the comedy.
They took out all the wonderful side characters over the years.
They took out the great music.
They took out the light-hearted good nature of the series.
The end result? Hyper-mutant turtles which dragged the cartoon into science-fiction territory. The end result? An blue alien creature with pink glowing eyes that was somehow supposed to dorph the villain that Shredder was.
Whatever.
Now I'll give Seasons 9 and 10 their due. They were okay. But that's not how the series should have ended. It should have ended with what it started with, and that was all the characters, the comedy, the music, and whatever else, intact and alive. The Turtles should have defeated Krang and Shredder - not killed them but trapped them in Dimension X, for example - and let it be.
Let the Turtles ride off into the sunset that is post-cartoon retirement and enjoy their glory days. But no. We had to spice up the show all for the sake of ratings. We had to change the look and feel of the show and pretty much get rid of everything that made it a success just so we can draw back those viewers who've grown weary of watching it.
Whatever.
If there's anything I find flawed in the show, it's the fact that the Ninja Turtles cartoon went on for two seasons too long. It should have ended with Season 8. Although, as I just said, Seasons 9 and 10 had their good moments.
But when people think back on the show, they don't remember Dregg and Mung and Hi-Tech. They remember Shredder and Krang and Bebop and Rocksteady. When people look back on the show, they don't remember the Dreggnaut. They remember the Technodrome, and the Foot Skis, and the Turtle Van, and the Turtle Blimp.
The only flaw in the show, in my opinion, were Seasons 9 and 10. Those seasons weren't the Ninja Turtles. Those seasons were like Ninja Turtles: The Next Generation, or some stupid thing like that.
I will always think highly of the first eight seasons of the show. Seasons 9 and 10, however -
Whatever.

If you haven't yet seen the last two seasons, let me just say this much.
The animation is terrible in Season 9. It was like the animators weren't even trying. It was definitely better in Season 10, however. It more resembled Season 8's animation.
The stories were darker than ever before in Season 9. Raphael acts like a jerk through the entire season. He acts like he wants to pick a fight with anything that moves. He was toned down a bit in Season 10, defintely a good move by Jeffrey Scott, who wrote all that season's episodes.
Good Lord, April looks awful in Season 9. She's hardly recognizeable.
Where did Irma, Vernon, Burne Thompson, Channel 6, and the Turtle Blimp go? Oh, yeah, they were all written out of the show. And we can't forget about Shredder, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, Dimension X, the Technodrome, and anything else that will even remotely remind us of the old cartoon. Shredder and company are brought back in Season 10, however, definitely a highlight for the season.
The sewers look different in Season 9. They are changed back into their more familiar format in Season 10.
Season 9 is okay. If you're looking for serious stories with pretty much no humor but plenty of kick-butt action, you may like this season, despite the fact that there's a whole new villain.
Season 10 is a huge improvement in just about everything. It's like everyone suddenly noticed how awful Season 9 was, and they bent over backwards to give Season 10 a makeover.
Season 9 is okay. Season 10 is better. But they were two seasons that shouldn't have come to pass. They have their bright moments, but "bright moments" aren't enough to salvage entire seasons.

Well I think they were making it darker o make it like the original TMNT. At that point, they probably couldn't have done it with shredder. But I can see how much of shock it was to those kids who had watched the cartoon for many years.

I guess we'll never really understand why everyone involved gave the series such a huge makeover. Season 8 was a good transition, but then they took it about ten steps further in Season 9.
I really hate to bash the last two seasons, since they are a part of the Ninja Turtles world. But knowing what the series was - and then what it eventually became - is kind of frustrating.
I don't really have a problem with change. I thought Season 8 was done well. But when you strip the show of everything that made it a success and try to come up with a new concept, people are naturally going to have their opinions about it.
The only things that survived the makeover were the four Turtles, old and trusty Splinter, and the Turtle Van. April barely survived; thank God her voice actor was brought back!
But the four frogs? History.
The Neutrinos? Gone.
Dimension X? Dimension what?
Pizza? Yeah, okay, sure . . .
I have grown more receptive to Seasons 9 and 10 over the years. I have been watching those seasons more so that I can appreciate what they are, as opposed to what they aren't. And it is taking time.
I will never fully embrace Seasons 9 and 10 like I have the first eight seasons of the show. But I will give them credit where it is due - for two years, those episodes satisfied my Ninja Turtles craving on Saturday morning.
And for that, I give those seasons a thumbs up.

The one thing I am keeping in mind with this new cartoon is to appreciate it for what it is. If I compare it to the old one, I'm not going to like it all that much.
But if I appreciate it for what it is, as opposed to what it isn't, I think I may like the new cartoon.

The things that annoyed me most about the Turtle's cartoon:
1. Whenever the wrong voice comes out of the wrong character. For example:
Shredder is fighting the monster in 'Killer Pizzas' and Leonardo knocks him out of the way or something. Shredder accuses the Turtle saying "I had him right where I wanted him" And then it shows Raphael but out comes Leonardo's voice "Sure you did"
2 . Any animation that made the Turtles look stupid. Case in point the episode "A thing about rats"....that is the worst animation I've ever seen for the Turtles. The Turtles look like major dorks, especially near the end. Krang looks pretty awful too.
3. Unturtle things like when the Turtle's see the evil plant tearing up the street on 'It Came From The Sewers' and they're all like "We gotta save the city" and Leonardo goes "Turtles, I'm not sure we can"
WHAZUPWTIHTHAT?!!! :-?
But I like the cartoon...ignore my stupid ramblings :D

Oh yeah... I hated it when the Turtles looked like there were pregnant, or reallly fat, cause their shells were bulging. Or that the streets of NYC hardly looked like NYC.
Or in the city destruction scenes, there were NO people anywhere! Just the Turtles, a couple cars, and their enemy. *sai*
Then. it really bigged me how the guys would always call each other by their full names. And wore letters on their belts. That seemed to take away the informal, "we're close brothers/friends" feel to the show.

What annoyed me:
Dregg: In general he was a stupid villian and bored me
Red Sky: Not the episodes, just the whole concept of making the sky red was stupid and pointless.
Plenty of the side villians: There were a lot of really bad villians on the show, my least favorite being those stupid aliens from Artless
Mikey Losing his chucks: I was especially annoyed with this. That stupid grappling hook was useless.
Baxter Stockman: Starting in Son of Return of the Fly Baxter all of a sudden is super powerful and easily beats the crap outta Shredder and company, this made no sense what so ever. He never showed this in the previous 2 episodes where he was a fly because he had no real strength and was easily pushed around by shredder. His brain also turned to mush in those episodes too, first he was a brilliant scientist and then he's some stupid idiot who has no idea what he's doing unless the alien computer helped him.

When the producers got rid of Mikey's nunchucks, that was a stupid move. Also, the later seasons were very bad...

What annoyed me the most eh...red sky of course.
The cartoon had been doing great for like 7 years, everything was fine when they decide to change LOTS of stuff, the look, the mood, even the theme...
Fine, i thought it wasn't that bad and let it slip, it wasn't the cartoon i grew up with anymore, rather some bad comic adaptation but what came later would be worst.
DREGG!
Gawd, talk about annoyance, they turned the show into some weird sci fi thing and it all started with dregg...sure the tmnt toon always had a lot of fiction here and there, but they kept some limit...red sky was like over the top with that stuff.
And for gods sake, what's wrong with the guy that colored the characters?!
Season 8 was kinda acceptable, they kept krang, shredder bebop and rocksteady...sure, they butchered their personality we'd grew up with in the toon, but they were still in it, in seasons 9 and 10 they were gone for the most part :sweatdro:
I liked the new mutation parts, but that still isn't enough for me considering all the bad stuff they've done.
I've also heard the ending was bad :ohwell:
Other than that i like the cartoon...ALIKKEITALUT!

Oh and psycrow i'm with ya, i wish they'd have kept the chucks, that was annoying that they removed it.

What annoyed me... was April constantly snooping around and getting herself in trouble and causing more problems for the turtles... She must have been in trouble in almost like every episode. It just got really funny because you know everytime April gets on the Turtlecom and reports to the turtles about some new stuff she got on the criminal... they are right behind her and they catch her... Then she always leave the the intercom with that stupid annoying sound like she's having an orgasm!! Awww!!! Then Leonardo will say... oh no .... we got to save april!!
What really annoyed me was the horrible animation in Season 9.... The Red Sky version of that made it look really unattractive & ugly.... plus this season had one of the most boring and stupid eps.. Season 8 is actually my favorite right next to Season 01.
Season 10 was ok.... I didn't understand like when the Turtles mutated to an even a bigger form like Leonardo did.... I didn't get why Leonardo never had any control over himself... Like in the "The Return Of Dregg"...When he mutated... he became like King Kong and just smashed everything in site, what was wrong with him??? They never explained that in the eps.
I liked the eps when Shredder & Krang returned to help Dregg....I wished they explained what happened to Bebop&Rocksteady..... I would have liked to know what was their fate.Another thing was the last episode!! It didn't seem like a series finale.... it just seemed like Season finale. No old faces or anything... We just have Dregg crazier than ever doing everything in his power in getting the turtles. It was kinda cool seeing Krang's old antroid body again though.
Another annoying thing. Never adding a Season 11 with old returnees & more new improvements!

Actually, I know what happened to Bebop and Rocksteady. According to an interview with Jeffrey Scott, the writer of all the Season 10 episodes, he was "told to avoid them" when writing the new season. It was okay to bring back Shredder and Krang, but for reasons we'll never know, Scott was not encouraged to bring back our favorite bumbling duo.

Yes, initially the ratings were great for Season 8. It was something different, and viewers tuned in to see all the differences in the show. But in Season 9, the ratings started to fall again. People weren't interested in a show featured around Dregg and all the other nonsense that transpired in the last two seasons. Only the most devout followers of the cartoon stuck it through to the end.
That's because CBS wanted more educational programming.
You know, I think that was the answer. Now that you mention it, I remember reading that somewhere. The cartoon didn't fit with the kind of direction CBS was taking Saturday mornings, so the show was cancelled.

Ok, I actually liked Raphs smartass mouth, Im glad he was funny, I just couldnt stand the stupid jokes he would tell (on that episode where the comedians got kidnapped).
April was a douchbag, and she never retained the same figure, well, none of the turtles did. They also had WAY to many flaws in the animation...I could understand 1 or 2....but when half of the series is filled with bandanna switches and overlapped animation, then I think they need to slow down a bit.
Shredder was funny, but he is not supposed to be. He is an evil mastermind, how did he even become head of the foot? He fails to often!

Well I've just watched first episode of season 9... people are right, the animation is not as good as in 8th seasom, David Wise isn't the writer...
What do you mean David Wise isn't the writer? He wrote all the Season 9 episodes.
"Talk about serious instant replay!" - Michaelangelo, from "The Unknown Ninja"
No he didn't. Il check the writer now, wait a sec.

Wow, I can't believe it! :o
I really thought David Wise wrote that episode. I wonder how many episodes he did write for that season then? And all this time I thought Dregg was David Wise's idea . . .

you know what annoyed me about the old toon, when ever an episode looked like they where going into something actually good or exciting but instead of making that the focus of the episode we would just get teased of it happening and then (which would have made for a better story) and the whole episode would involve Shredder trying to execute the plan and the turtles would stop him, leaving the episode kind of hollow.
When the turtles started to mutate out of control in Red Sky and they couldn't fight a battle any more unless they super mutated.
The fact that April never learned how to fight in the old toon :( I think she had potencial).
that the show didn't go into the bacl stories of characters, like the bitter rivarly that caused Saki and Yoshi to hate each other, how Shredder and Krang met, what Krang's rein was like before he was banished from demision X.
The fact that during the last seasons April was sort of phased out and replaced by Carter.
The fact the season seven wasn't longer.
That the Rat King wasn't used more.

The things that annoyed me most about the Turtle's cartoon:
1. Whenever the wrong voice comes out of the wrong character. For example:
Shredder is fighting the monster in 'Killer Pizzas' and Leonardo knocks him out of the way or something. Shredder accuses the Turtle saying "I had him right where I wanted him" And then it shows Raphael but out comes Leonardo's voice "Sure you did"
Yeah I agree with you on this, but its 80s animation, errors are common. There is another error when Michaelangelo is driving the Turtle Van in "A Thing About Rats." Donatello is the one talking and you see his mouth move, then Michaelangelo starts speaking with Donatello's voice.

They think the weapons are too dangerous to even displayed on cartoons, bah. Then Batman cartoons and others displaying villains with guns should be banned too which is completely irrational. I remember reading somewhere that after a while the animators couldn't tell one turtle from another. Whan English isn't you're first language, screwing up character lines in animation is natural. Especially, since the Japanese were not accustomed to animating a sound track. You see, they tend to work backwards, and record everything near the end.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Brits pressured them into doing that. But this brings up what bugs me, they only used their weopons to cut ropes and pizzas. Maybe fighting robots, which can't feel pain and don't "die." That's pretty much all they did. how can parents even complain about violence when it really isn't there?

- That they changed Splinter's origin. They could have had the same Hamato Yoshi betrayal story- and have Yoshi take his rat to America, live with him, and eventually just pass away of sadness and a broken heart due to having been shunned. This would make the universes more reconciliable with each other.
- Otherwise, mainly the fact that they stopped showing it where I lived.

Having Hamato Yoshi pass away in any way, shape or form would have still been too dark for the show back then, even if it was just of sadness. I don't think they had much of way to keep both Yoshi and the rat in the story unless they were turned into the same person.

They showed the ghost of Shibano-sama. It was inside a sarcophagus of some sort. It was obvious that he had lived a long time ago and was now deceased. So it would not have been so horrendously hard to handle. Even having Yoshi catch an infectious disease or have a sudden heart attack may have still been manageable. But changing Splinter's origin makes it very hard to have the stories cross over.

-Raphael is a smartass instead of being the angry turtle from every other version.
-Shredder is a whiner, making it impossible to ever take him serious as a threatening villain.

Actually, you know what annoys me about that? They don't know whether to make them amphibians or just regular reptiles. Sometimes they can Breath underwater, and sometimes they can't. Reminds me of this exchange-
One of the Turtles: So, you think you can tell us the secret of breathing underwater?
One of the Punk Frogs: Nope! That secret dies with us.
But they COULD breathe underwater. Had April said it, maybe...
All turtles in reality are reptiles though. They just hold their breath for hours like other gill-less creatures do. So, I guess it was meant to be satire, but they delivered it so matter-of-factly that I had arguments at school for years afterwards about them not being amphibians. It was sickeningly frustrating.

the disconnected continuity that occured in the show, one of my biggest beefs is the situation with Baxter the fly.
The "girly" sounding grunts that the turtles (in particular Raphael) made on occassion. It is a serious bug out! The turtles would be in the midse of a battle with the ground around them being peppered with gun shots and out of no where one of the turtles would dive for cover and you'd hear a very femimine grunt come out of one of them. And it's like WTF?! This is more prominent in season two.

Overuse of Pizza. Seriously.
You do have a point. I mean, sure it's a cartoon, and cartoon characters have their food they may be obsessed with. At least Popeye and Bugs had vegetables like spinach and carrots, things that are healthy. With a diet of all pizza, it's a wonder the turtles weren't too fat and slow to do their ninja stuff. Sure they burn it off fighting Shredder, so they wouldn't have as much of a weight problem as anyone else would eating like them, but still, a lack of balanced diet would really put them at a disadvantage.

I'm wondering what April's social life outside the turtles must have ended up being like. She probably smells like a sewer all the time, not to mention people giving her strange looks due to weird pizza toppings. I guess she never ate it in quite the same quantities as the turtles though, otherwise she would have gotten really fat. Although that would have made it harder for Shredder to kidnap her, even if April would end up needing to buy yellow jumpsuits in a much larger size:P

Back on-topic (or "OT" as it were)... Another thing I can say really bugged me about the classic 'toon is the fact that the first season was the best on average. I am basing this on the fact that Season 3 and Movie 1 both aired when I was in the 7th grade.
Since Season Three wrapped in early February, the movie came out between seasons. But, it was actually closer to the end of Three than the beginning of Four...

Just because it has so many past bad guys in it! It really should have been a major two parter that contained more good guy guests aside from whoever was in it. I think Casey Jones and... well, was that it?
I've been thinking about rewatching the series again up until the new season comes out. Just so it can be fresh in my mind. heh!!

It was Casey Jones and Zack, ad then good ol Splinter and April.... so yeah... Shredder has this major line-up of dangerous villians.... and all the Turtles had were just their regular sensei, miss damsel in distress, a nut with a hockey mask and a crazy kid that thinks he's a turtle.... whoa.... What sucks more is they that team-up helped defeat all the bad guys regardless... Well it didn't help that that particular episode's 'moral' was the turtles discovering just how useful regular humans are to them, so they were kinda forced to just use their human allies rather than calling more capable friends like the Punk Frogs, Usagi, Mondo Gecko and Bugman...
What also annoyed me of the series was how they would introduce characters that would never stick around like what Dan just said. I don't mind when they have excuses like Lotus being a drifter and the Frogs living in Florida... but when they have Mona Lisa say she's moving to New York to stay closer to Raph and that Mondo Gecko is gonna be their neighbor.. and yet they NEVER show up again.... I mean that just sucks. And like.. will Don ever re-activate Metalhead again or was he turned into a pizza oven? Why didn't they run into Lotus more often? Surely they would crossed paths since she operates in New York, being hired by several criminal figures... Did Don just plain give up on trying to send Usagi back home? I mean they sent Hokum hare back to storybook land right away, but as far as we know, Usagi is trapped in New York with Obento forever.
And why did they get rid of most of the supporting cast in Red Sky? Of all the 'guest stars' only Casey and Rat King appeared during the Red Sky eps, one episode each. Hell who knows, maybe they could have made Casey a regular instead of introducing Carter.

I agree with a lot of what you guys have said so far. But, even though a few people have mentioned Mondo Gecko, what about Mondo Gecko HIMSELF?
<rant>
Maybe he's not so bad if you haven't read the comics, but even so he kind of annoys me. His voice, mainly. But... A lot of the voices weren't wonderful. Mondo's definitely wasn't the worst, but still. But he also looks quite a bit different from the comic version, which was a lot better by comparison.
His skateboard... What was up with that thing? It has a friggin' motor on it.
And the way they changed his entire backstory... He was a baby gecko crawling around in the same ooze as the turtles. It seems like they took the easy way out. In the comics, he was this awesome HUMAN teenager who had his own rock band called Merciless Slaughter. That Mondo was my hero... The cartoon Mondo, not so much.

True, I didn't like the whole 'he was always there' kinda thing. In fact I always hate those kind 'it was always like this but we didn't see it' kind of retcons. I mean, I see the first episode and don't remember seeing no friggin gecko walking around the same Mutagen the turtles were in the flashback Splinter recalled. I mean, even Mr. X took Gecko away before Hamato Yoshi would arrive to find his turtles covered in goo... why the hell didn't he take the turtles too? hell, why the hell did he take the gecko to begin with? Does he go around looking for animals crawling around in glowing goo? How did he know the gecko would mutate into a dude he could use for his plans?? It also kinda sickens to me know that Shredder wasn't the only super villian running around at the time. Why didn't Mr. X surface until the CBS episodes then?
Well anyways... I mean it is a kid's cartoon and I guess like General Gato said, they needed a quick origin fix and all... but yeah, I liked Mondo Gecko, any way we can get him. A bad-ass skateboarding dude that could be Mike's much needed best bud. I know his story sucked in the show, but he still could have appeared in more episodes. Another Mike and Gecko episode where they team up, now that they're already friends, would have been cool. I did like how Gecko moved in with them for a while in the Archie comics and almost felt kinda bad when he had to go when he joined the Mighty Mutinamals. He's an interesting contrast to the turtles... Mutant Teenagers, but Gecko has had a human life beforehand that the Turtles could have asked about. First hand look at a real teenager's life, since April was already way past that and didn't think that much beyond her career.

That's true, I do love Mondo in general. I was so excited when I found the Mondo episode again recently... Then I remembered how much it kinda sucked. But I still loved it ^^ Not as much as the comics, though. Comic-Mondo... He just rocks my world and lights up my life.
I think I really might have cried a bit when they just killed off all the Mutanimals that one time. That was so lame >.> But Mondo still lives on, in my head, and in my heart.
Sorry, that was corny, but I couldn't resist xD

Yeah the fact that they never wrapped up the Usagi thing is probably the thing that annoys me the most. The absence of Metalhead, Mona Lisa and the Punk Frogs pisses me off too.

I would have liked to have seen at least one more Lotus episode, maybe in season 7. I liked storylines that delt with ancient Japan and Splinter and Shredder's past and since they had better stories in that season, a Lotus episode would have been killer!

Yeah, Mondo does show up again. All I remember is something about a mutant hunter and then Mondo shows up out of nowhere. It's kind of funny because the turtles say something along the lines of 'We were wondering what happened to you...' almost like it's some kind of in-joke.
It's not just TMNT that does this, but a lot of cartoons and comics will add in all kinds of new characters all the time, then they show up once and mysteriously disappear forever... What's the point?

Another thing for me were the inconsistancies. Like the appearance of portals and even how the portals worked from one episode to the next. How far the turtles could jump or how high. Sometimes it was high but that episode in early season 4, the one with the marble soldiers, they could barely jump over that grate in the sewers. Michaelangelo didn't even make it.
Sage Ninja

yeah that jump over the grate in season four in the sewers was narrow enough that I think even I could have made it across. It was pretty pitiful that four teenaged, ninja trained, naturally athletic, turtles couldn't make a jump that any one could leap over if they really had to. But I didn't get the danger of the grate any way? They where under ground in the sewers for goodness sakes, how deep could it have been? How bad of a fall would it have been if the turtles had missed the ledge? It couldn't have been deep enough to be fatal.

that was my biggest freakin' gripe with Red Sky. Finnally the show gets serious and they have a legitimate threat and the show goes and spoils that by making the turtles helpless unless the turn into the incrediable hulk :x The muation thing could have been a cool plot twist but I hated the way they executed it. Other than that, unpon a second viewing Red Sky wasn't that bad.

Oh... And I fell for it, too =(
The worst part is, I don't even have any of my old toys. I used to have probably as much as I do now (I posted my ridiculously vast collection in the collection photos thread), but one horrible day, I came home from school and my mom was like 'Oh, guess what! I cleaned out your closet.' She got rid of pretty much all of my turtles toys, as well as a lot of my other ones. I'm still mourning the loss of all those Happy Meal prizes... T_T
We'll probably never see Yaotl's stone generals from the 2007 movie ever again, but I still got the toys xD They're all kinds of pure JOY to play with (except for Serpiente and her glowing boobs), though, so I guess I'm not a total sucker. -getting off topic-
Hmmm... In general, I guess I don't have much to add that hasn't been said, but some of the things that annoyed me personally were:
-Careless mistakes, like when a turtle would speak with the wrong voice.
-The way the Donny and Mikey's personalities were amplified to the max, but they toned Raph waaay down and Leo never really had a very distinct personality (to me).
-That one episode in particular that was all about Splinter's 'kimono'. I don't remember if they ever referred to it as that in other episodes, but it just bugged me that they kept calling it that. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe the thing Splinter wears is called a 'yukata'.
-The animation in some of the later seasons. Some of those episodes were embarrassing just to watch.
There were a few other things as well, but it could mostly be forgiven because TMNT was, after all, a children's cartoons back in the 80's/90's. Really, nothing ever annoyed me when I was a kid... Partially because I didn't really know any better or I wouldn't notice the obvious careless mistakes, and partially because I was a little kid growing up in the early 90's :D

huh,I really liked Mondo Geko in the cartoon and I didn't find his origin all that bad eighther. I have never read the archie comics so he is the only version I have to go on, but I really liked the way his character was represented in the toon with him being a street wise criminal. Well, I'm a comic purist... an extreme one. So anything that deviates too much just makes my brain go 'WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!'
And I don't think you understand. Donny was super-nerdy and Mikey was super-bad-surfer-stereotype. If you think they got sort of pushed into the background in the new movie, I agree, but for example, in the 2003 cartoon, the turtles personalities were a bit more accurate all around and they all had pretty equal screen time.

Actually those 'surfer-lines' still crack me up today including the unavoidable 'dude' behind every sentence (it may be a fine line between funny and emberassing though hehe).
What really annoyed me was the increasing amount of 'fillers' in the later seasons which featured mobsters and scientists who looked pretty much the same and had nearly the same boring plots.
That, and the absence of anything ninja-ish.
Then again i allways saw the ot more as a sitcom. °_^

I kinda agree. The surfer lingo was representative of the time. Annoying surfer guys and stoner teens really talked like that. So it does have a certain charm to it. Even if it can get pretty annoying after a few episodes back to back.
I'm sure this has been talked about already, but one thing that really annoyed me was Casey Jones only showing up for one episode. It's strange to think about how big of a part he is in Turtle lore, yet he only made one appearance in the old toon. (he did only appear once, am I correct?)
I think a common gripe amongst us Turtle fans is that we are pissed off about how cool characters like Usagi and Casey and Mona Lisa and Lotus and Mondo Gecko had very few appearances in such a long running show. Oh well. All we can do is look back and say "what the sh!t?"

Casey Jones was in 2 episodes of the Season 3 run.. I think 2 of the CBS episodes and 1 of the Red Sky eps.
Usagi was only in 2 eps, but then again they have to ask Stan Sakai permission I guess.
Mondo Gecko was in 2 episodes and Mona Lisa was only in one. To be fair, characters like Mona Lisa (and Merdude, Scumbug, Antrax and such) were introduced fairly late in the toyline and the show.... and then Red Sky got rid of all the 'extras', so it sorta stands to reason that some of them only had 1 appearance.

No, he did appear in four episodes. First time, of course, in Casey Jones: Outlaw Hero, second time in Corporate Raiders From Dimension X, third time in Night of the Rogues and the fourth and last time in Cyber Turtles.
So it was more than one time, but in my opinion still nowhere near enough, considering what an important character Casey was in the original comic and how many episodes they had.
