View Full Version : Peter David on Dreamwave TMNT

Yes. It's true. I've been approached by Dreamwave about doing a new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" series tying in with the new animated TV show. And I said I would do it because, frankly, my kids wouldn't have it any other way. My three elder daughters are huge TMNT fans (Caroline hasn't weighed in with an opinion) and made it clear there would be dire--DIRE--consequences if I passed up the opportunity.
Further details will be forthcoming as soon as Dreamwave irons out the final kinks with the Turtles folks.
The article can be found here: http://peterdavid.malibulist.com/gmlog/00000248.html
Unfortunately, It doesn't tell much, But I still fear it will be a children's comic...

Posted at Newsarama (http://www.newsarama.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000200), when someone complained that the now show probably would be as "kiddified" as the old cartoon:
Peter David:Well, I'm in a slightly better position to judge, having read the bible and the first four scripts. Based on that, I would strongly disagree with your assessment. In terms of how it will differ, I leave to the Turtle guys to be specific (saying as much or as little as they wish), but the tone is *much* more evocative of the original comic series than the previous animated show was.And then:
LeSean Thomas:
I'll have to agree with Pete myself, i was originally to be hired in the layout department for this series back home in NYC (its a first for it to be produced "in House" here in NYC) and i know the stories of only the first 2 episodes and have seen the model sheets and its gonna be pretty cool. if you're a fan of the turtles that is.
i can only imagine ol' Pete will put quite a spin on them, the same way he did with another "green mutation" back in the early 90's
should be fun........

Well yeah we know that the new cartoon is more mature than the old one, But it still kiddiefied version of Mirage. And if the Comic will be heavily based on the show, Then it will be that way too. Personally Im waiting for something like Ultimate Spider-man or Gotham Knights...
Any idea when the comic is coming out?

Well I must give props to Beaker for breaking this story first. I'm hoping with all of you that it is a good serious comic. I really think that the days of "kiddified" TMNT are over. I'm hoping (and judging from the episode descriptions we are going to get) a show that is "suitable for kids" but not "written for kids". There is a tremendous difference between those two phrases. From what I can gather from Peter Laird he wants to bury the "kiddified" image more than anyone else. I can't say I blame him.

I know what you mean. Like Batman TAS, Bot adults and kids loved the show. I have high expetations for this show, and new comic too. I hope it will turn out as a serious comic.
"Kiddified Mirage"?
Well, it kinda has to be, doesn't it? This is a show mainly intended for kids and preteens. Not exactly the best demographic for ninjas being impaled on swords and having their heads lopped off, now is it? :P
The tone is what matters. The old cartoon took the TMNT and made them goofy. The new one won't. 'Nuff said? :)

Yeah we know that show is kiddiefied Mirage, but we are hoping that the comic would be more like "Ultimate Spider-man" and such.
Well, the new comic is supposed to be based on the cartoon, right? So it stands to reason they'll be extremely similar.
I'd like to see an "Ultimate TMNT" too, though. I've actually had a whole bunch of ideas for a title like that in the past month...

Agreed. The days of the goofy Archie image TMNT(which unfortunately still adorns every darn page of the sorry official site) are long gone. The new cartoon, and Im hoping the new comic...has a definate more edge, anime look than ever before. I am so glad they decided to go with this modern look, and not down that Transformers Pokemon route. Do you know how easy it would have been for them to Pokemon TMNT up like they did with TF?

Yes, but the diffrence is, Peter Laird is now the "creative Director" of the show, won't allow it to turn like the old cartoon did after first season. But still we don't know waht the new comic will be like. Direct adaption of the show or something like "Ultimate Spider-man". I think the latter would be great, I like how the Ultimate Spider-man brough the story to todays world, and is diffrent version of the Amazing Spider-man. I love both.
If something like that happened to the TMNT, that would be a dream. But as it is show based, it might rule out the possibility of death, and so it would be impossibel for it to become "Ultimate-TMNT".

The days of the goofy Archie image TMNT
Question: have you even READ the archie series at all??
They were most certainly NOT 'goofy', particularly the later issues.
Karpo_007
01-21-2003, 12:15 PM
Well they weren't as goofy as cartoon, no by far, but they had much more humor than Mirage series. Still It is a good children's comic, I really liked it.

The Archie were great... still had the humor that I expected with the TMNT but with an overall more adult tone...

Defintely more mature than the cartoon. If mirage was from ages of 12-... Archie could have been like 8-12.

Unfortunately. I remember when I was 11 getting it for a few issues, than realizes it wasnt even close to the Mirage series I had just discovered in the back issue racks.

If you were reading Mirage at the time, I can understand your lack of intrest In the archie. But as for me, Mirage never came here in any form. There was the cartoon and archie. Not that I would have been intrested in it when I was 5. I had read something about it from newpspaper, But When I saw the first scans of The mirage comic early last summer(Thanks H00ter_bill), I was sold. And now, about 8 months later, I own pretty much every TMNT thing Mirage has ever published.

the Archie series, starting sometime in the issue 40's, became MUCH more mature and continuous. it most definitely was NOT immature. read about Mike's 'blindside' story or the 'future wars' or the 'black hole trilogy'. it was hardly a child's series as the Mutanimals were rather blatantly and violently killed. it was not as violent or really as epic as Mirage, but it was an excellent series and I was sad to see it go.

I have read some of those, The last issues I remember reading were The ones with the cyber turtles and walking Hitler Brains.... Those stories were very diffrent from the early archie, But still targeted at younger audience than Mirage.

Yeah... Well it was pretty heavy stuff for kid's comic.

Hmm, not sure what archie series were talking about. Im talking about the painfully goofy, round bubble headed TMNT(the kind that adorns the official site, and the look of those comic strips they pu ton there) with the bad art and worse gags. Last issue I bought had the TMNT in some intergalactic wrestling match. Youch. I may have been young, but I new garbage when I saw it.

Those were the earlier ones. It did change to better direction. Still no where near the glory of Mirage.

(STILL does not see the big deal about Mirage, although perhaps only reading the first issue and watching Shredder dying uber-pathetically may have something to do with it...)

Yes if you have read only first issue, you can't really say anything about Mirage.

Bottom line, Mirage is where it all began...before the cartoon, before Archie, before the Next Mutation.
Though, I have to say after thumbing through each of the post Dec 2001 Mirage TMNT issues I have to say the mantle definately is being passed to greener pasture(new cartoon, upcoming Dreamwave comic, etc)

You think his death in Issue 1 was pathetic? The TMNT threw ninja stars and shrapnel into his body, he was between brutally with all four of their weapons, he was stabbed through the stomach by Leonardo, Donatello threw his Staff into Shredder's face, he was blown to bits by a thermite grenade, then finally he fell off a roof to his death.
What more do you want the Turtles to bang his corpse?

i remember the issue where the future tmnt fooled hitler into shooting his own brains out. pretty freaky stuff. if archie was for kids, it sure was damn heavy stuff.

It's not so much the fact that he died that bothers me, it's the fact that he died in the FIRST ISSUE.
I mean, sure, the way the story was flowing, it couldn't have gone to anything else, but c'mon. Even CARTOON Shredder lasted longer than that. (whether because the Turtles abide by the 80s Law of Bad Guy Retreat or no) The fact that it left the series without any real villian for what, 15, 20 issues? I don't like it.

01-22-2003, 01:23 PM
Well, when they wrote the first comic, I doubt they had any plans on doing more issues...

You should have understaood by now, That when they made the issue, They had now idea it would become so popular, or that they would be doing Issue #2 some day.
But I agree, Shredder is a good enemy, And Im happy that they will do "return to New york" near end of the season.

Yeah.. I first didn't like the Archies, cause the the first issues I got were just the comic version of the cartoon. But after I really got into the TMNT fandom, and the other fans showed me just how intense the latter Archies were, my views were suddenly changed.
Sure, the art wasn't very raw and ragged like the Mirages, but the story lines were amazing. War, drama, conflict, relationships, and a wide selection of believable characters (like mutamals, werewolves, mad power mongers, and more human friends of the TMNT).
So yah... it's best to be much more specific when you refer to the Archies. It'll cause a lot of drama and dispute if you flame the entire series and refuse it's existance just cause you are only judging it by issue #10 or some early issue like that.
