Half of the time Michelagnelo's name is spelled MICHELANGELO, an half of the time it's MICHAELANGELO. If he truly is named after the Renaissance artist, there should be only one A in his name. However, all of the new posters have his name spelled incorrectly like it's Michael... angelo. I guess that's what we get for mispronouncing Italian names.

Originally Eastman and Laird (mis)spelled it Michaelangelo, and it suck until the 2k3 series where Laird thought a new start meant a correcting of the spelling of Michelangelo. Guess I've missed the typos in the new movie posters.

Roseangelo

Yeah, it was originally spelled "wrong," but IMO it shouldn't have been changed after nearly 20 years. Michaelangelo can spell his name with an extra "a" if he wants to. I refuse to spell it without it.

So I'm always excited to see the original spelling on new stuff (like the mini promo posters from Comic-Con last year). You can be sure that they are slips that were not intended.

His is the only one that is different from the Renaissance version. I prefer it with the added A. :)

Personally, I prefer it "Michelangelo." And while it's misspelled on the Comic-Con movie posters, a lot of other new movie stuff has it spelled correctly. (toys, game trailers, etc.)

I think the fact that they took the opportunity to fix the spelling during the current revamp says something. *shrug*

Jo Dawn

I just automatically spell it with the 'a'... but I don't really care either way. Though, whoever said about the mispronounciation was right... The Renaissance man was pronounced 'Mick-elangelo' not 'MIKE-elangelo'.

For the turtle, I prefer the MIKE pronounciation... but for historical accuracy in real life ya gotta go with the mick.

...Anyhow... Yeah. It was a mistake, they fixed it, who cares. Heh.

EDIT - Upon further thinking on this subject, can you imagine if it WAS the true pronunciation of Michelangelo? He could be called 'Mickey'... Thus, I'm sure, invoking the great Toni Basil hit 'Hey Mickey'. I guarantee he'd love it.

When Peter Laird changed the spelling for the Mirage Volume 4 comics, I was very happy. Knowing that the turtles are supposed to have names based off the Renaissance artists, it always bothered me (even when I was a little kid) that it was spelled "Michaelangelo." The new movie poster that misspells it bothers me, too. "Michelangelo" just seems more crisp and clean and accurate.

But I can't imagine Mikey being called Mickey. ;)

I kind of like that Michaelangelo was spelled with the "a" that made him diffrent from the artist. It kind of fits with his character that he is diffrent and doesn;t fit the mold and is "out of the Box".

oh and about the whole "Mike" pronoucment as opposed to the whole "Mick" pronouncement that is diffrent from the artist. If you ever see th japanese dub of the classic toon the pronounce Michaelangelo's name with the "Mick" rather than the "Mike" sound, so his name sounds like "Mickaelangelo" when they say his name.

I never even noticed the extra "a" while it was there, lol. Still, I'm all for the correction, because if it was spelled with the extra "a", then that would mean Splinter somehow botched it up when he named them, which is hard to do as he was supposedly looking at the actual artist's name in a book right in front of him, right? Even if he was illiterate he still would not have been able to somehow add an extra letter to the name he was looking at, and he wasn't.

I like the "a" for the reasons Roseangelo and Sage Ninja said, but I'm not picky about it. 'Cause if we're talking about Italian accuracy, then should Raphael be Raffael or Raffaelo or something? I personally think "ph" suits him better than an "f" or two anyway. "F" seems to flowery a letter for him. "Ph" unbalanced seems more like Raph to me.:) I like how you can get the more normal "Michael" nickname out of Michaelangelo. I don't know any kids who spell it Michel, but there are two Michaels in my kung fu class alone.

When I was in Italy, my pastor and his family got this for me for my birthday or Christmas, it's from an Italian TMNT stationary set. I love how Raphael has a bo staff. This really kills Mikey's joke, "All the good ones end in O." from TMNT 2.

That reminds me. Recently, IGN kept misspelling Raphael as Rafael in their new game preview (found here (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/766/766659p1.html)). It just looks bad more than anything else.

Also, anyone noticed how Michelangelo's shortened name is now Mike instead of Mikey for most official things? I assume it's because the movie will use Mike more than Mikey, just think that's interesting.

I'm honestly expecting more Mikey than Mike in the movie, as they seem to really be playing him as the little brother.

I've seen no particular favoritism for either, though. Just depends on the mood at the time, really. Just as Don is sometimes Donnie (but not as often as Mike is Mikey).

Time Mistress

I prefer Mike over Mikey too. Again, no big deal. But I think it makes Mike sound more "grown up" and less the baby of the family that way. For some reason calling Don, Donny doesn't have the same conotation of "non maturity" for me. It's like the 50 year old guy you still call Jimmy instead of Jim or James, just because it suits him better, kinda like the late great actor, Jimmy Doohan.

Jester
02-27-2007, 09:55 PM
Hasn't Mirage canon always had Michaelangelo's abbreviated name be Mike? Wasn't it the movies and new toon that called him Mikey. I could be wrong though, cause I usually am.

My brother's name is Jim, but I think I'm the only person left who calls him Jimmy, as that's what he grew up as. He's 25 now.

I actually don't see Mike vs. Mikey as a maturity thing, but rather as an indication of famililarity. The better you know Mike, the more likely you'd call him Mikey.

Heh, if Michelangelo has a good time milking his "baby brother" status for all it's worth, he can stay Mikey, as far as I'm concerned. Mikey suits him. In the old comics he was always Mike, but it looks like in the movies and new cartoons, it's Mikey.

Donny as a nickname bothers me slightly more than Mikey, because I think it makes Donny seem younger (and, as has been said in other threads, Don is officially "second-oldest"). If we were going by the true Renaissance artists' names, though, I've read that he would be called Donato, and Raph would be Raffaello.

But no nickname is worse than Raphie. ;)

That's one of the things I liked better in the old toon: where they always call each other by their full names. And that's why whenever I post here I always do the same, except when quoting.

I agree. I don't think 'Donnie' makes him seem younger. I'm not sure why, really (though I love 'Donnie', but probably because I've always loved that name.) Of course, you have to look at the personalities, too. Mikey acts young. Donnie does not. Unless they're, ya know, 3. :)

It's all in the person, I think. Both are nicknames of familiarity, not immaturity.

EDIT - And as for 'Raphie'... I kinda liked it... if only because it's SO doesn't suit him. It's cute. Like, only a brother could get away with calling him that...

Odd preference for me... I don't mind "Donny" if it's used more sparingly than "Mikey", but for some reason I dislike when it's spelled "Donnie." I have no clue why... maybe 'cos that spelling looks a little less masculine to me. Or... more "cutesy?" Bleh. And "Raphie" is only OK if Michelangelo is using it to tick his brother off. :D

I actually find the old toon standard of using the full name all the time to be a bit awkward, actually. Heck, my real name has only TWO syllables and my family shortens it... these guys? Raphael has three, Donatello and Leonardo have four, and Michelangelo has five! Of course, they seemed a lot less like a family in the OT... that could be one of the reasons why. It was always so formal.

I wouldn't say that. Just because they're formal, doesn't mean they're not emotionally attached. I don't know why people make that assumption. Splinter always refering to them as "students", not "sons", may cut him off a little, but he and they still show they care for each other and everything, like a family.

I feel the same way. I LOVE the TMNT's full names, but it seems awkward for anyone but Splinter to use them all the time. I like how they all have unusual full names, but more common nicknames. My own name is the same way. I like how it allows for uniqueness so you are the only one with your name in your class, but you classmates can still call you something "normal" and you still have a chance of at least finding your nickname on a sticker set, pen, or bicycle license plate.

And I think only Mike or Casey could get away with calling Raph, Raphie. Though there is that "Mr. Raphie Neighborhood" quote that Raph makes himself during the Invasion arc in season 3.

Actually I've never been fully on board with the whole turtles haveing their nick name being used all the time. Yes I understand that the turtles have long unsuall names that might sound awkward to say. But really that is what makes them unique and special, since they are so unuasual. And seriesly the boys have such elequant and strong names chopping them up and shortening them just seems like there being cheapened.

I guess I feel kind of strongly about this but I've never been into nick names, I always call some one by their full name, and I generally want people to call me by my full name. I think a name shouldni't be messed with especially if it is a very nice name. Like my little sister's name is Patricia. Its a very pretty name so my family and I (as well as most of her friends) call her Patricia not "Pat" or "Patty" which is just as crappy shortened version of her name and takes all the wealth from it. And seriously is it really so impersonal to call people by their full name?

And to be completely honest I really don't like the use of the nick name "Mikey" at all. And I find it interesting that it has been said that in mirage canon they don't call Michaelangelo "Mikey" but Mike . If the turtles have to be call by nick names I think prefere Mike to Mikey. Mike just seems more teenage like where is "Mikey" sounds well...kind of bratty:ohwell: .

ANd I don't know why but anytime one of the turtles call each other by their full name it makes me pay attention more. I notice that Leonardo calls Mikey "Michaelangelo" every once in while, and for some reason I find it special. like he is showing a bit of respect for his brother when he does that. Actually Leo is probaly the only turtle to call his brothers by their full names on occasion.

Roseangelo

My name gets shortened to Rose by many of my friends and virtually all of my family, which I'm used to. But I never use that nickname myself, so I sign everything with my full name and only use my full name in places like work where I really don't know anyone on a close, personal level. One of my friends from high school even says that you have to earn the right to call me Rose. So that the Turtles would use nicknames amongst each other has always seemed like a natural thing to me.

Well, Casey's called him that once (tales of leo) and didnt say anything.

I have never heard any of the turtles call Raphael "Raphie" before. :-? When exactly has this ever occured? And some how I don't see Raphael putting up with Michaelangelo calling him by such a wussified name, since he seems to get smacked for far lesser insults. But if he does it was probably because he was distracted by something to really react to it. Either that or Mikey said it as kidding and just let it off that one time. Has Mikey said it often?

Also in Tales of Leo I think maybe Raph let the "Raphie" thing pass because of the severity of the situation with Leonardo.
