Does this bother anyone else?

Half of the time Michelagnelo's name is spelled MICHELANGELO, an half of the time it's MICHAELANGELO. If he truly is named after the Renaissance artist, there should be only one A in his name. However, all of the new posters have his name spelled incorrectly like it's Michael... angelo. I guess that's what we get for mispronouncing Italian names.

Originally Eastman and Laird (mis)spelled it Michaelangelo, and it suck until the 2k3 series where Laird thought a new start meant a correcting of the spelling of Michelangelo. Guess I've missed the typos in the new movie posters.

Yeah, it was originally spelled "wrong," but IMO it shouldn't have been changed after nearly 20 years. Michaelangelo can spell his name with an extra "a" if he wants to. I refuse to spell it without it.

So I'm always excited to see the original spelling on new stuff (like the mini promo posters from Comic-Con last year). You can be sure that they are slips that were not intended.

His is the only one that is different from the Renaissance version. I prefer it with the added A.

Thanks! I did not know that little piece of trivia. I guess I do prefer it mispelled now.

Personally, I prefer it "Michelangelo." And while it's misspelled on the Comic-Con movie posters, a lot of other new movie stuff has it spelled correctly. (toys, game trailers, etc.)

I think the fact that they took the opportunity to fix the spelling during the current revamp says something. *shrug*

I'm more of a Michaelangelo man myself.

I don't care, really. It's just an "A" to me.

I just automatically spell it with the 'a'... but I don't really care either way. Though, whoever said about the mispronounciation was right... The Renaissance man was pronounced 'Mick-elangelo' not 'MIKE-elangelo'.

For the turtle, I prefer the MIKE pronounciation... but for historical accuracy in real life ya gotta go with the mick.

...Anyhow... Yeah. It was a mistake, they fixed it, who cares. Heh.

EDIT - Upon further thinking on this subject, can you imagine if it WAS the true pronunciation of Michelangelo? He could be called 'Mickey'... Thus, I'm sure, invoking the great Toni Basil hit 'Hey Mickey'. I guarantee he'd love it.

When Peter Laird changed the spelling for the Mirage Volume 4 comics, I was very happy. Knowing that the turtles are supposed to have names based off the Renaissance artists, it always bothered me (even when I was a little kid) that it was spelled "Michaelangelo." The new movie poster that misspells it bothers me, too. "Michelangelo" just seems more crisp and clean and accurate.

But I can't imagine Mikey being called Mickey.

Well... they just suck at spelling, lol. That drives me insane. I'm sure they don't really know the history of the names, or the actual names. They just... suck, I dunno, lol.

I kind of like that Michaelangelo was spelled with the "a" that made him diffrent from the artist. It kind of fits with his character that he is diffrent and doesn;t fit the mold and is "out of the Box".

oh and about the whole "Mike" pronoucment as opposed to the whole "Mick" pronouncement that is diffrent from the artist. If you ever see th japanese dub of the classic toon the pronounce Michaelangelo's name with the "Mick" rather than the "Mike" sound, so his name sounds like "Mickaelangelo" when they say his name.

I never even noticed the extra "a" while it was there, lol. Still, I'm all for the correction, because if it was spelled with the extra "a", then that would mean Splinter somehow botched it up when he named them, which is hard to do as he was supposedly looking at the actual artist's name in a book right in front of him, right? Even if he was illiterate he still would not have been able to somehow add an extra letter to the name he was looking at, and he wasn't.

I like the "a" for the reasons Roseangelo and Sage Ninja said, but I'm not picky about it. 'Cause if we're talking about Italian accuracy, then should Raphael be Raffael or Raffaelo or something? I personally think "ph" suits him better than an "f" or two anyway. "F" seems to flowery a letter for him. "Ph" unbalanced seems more like Raph to me. I like how you can get the more normal "Michael" nickname out of Michaelangelo. I don't know any kids who spell it Michel, but there are two Michaels in my kung fu class alone.

Want Italian spellings...here you go.

When I was in Italy, my pastor and his family got this for me for my birthday or Christmas, it's from an Italian TMNT stationary set. I love how Raphael has a bo staff. This really kills Mikey's joke, "All the good ones end in O." from TMNT 2.

That reminds me. Recently, IGN kept misspelling Raphael as Rafael in their new game preview (found here). It just looks bad more than anything else.

Also, anyone noticed how Michelangelo's shortened name is now Mike instead of Mikey for most official things? I assume it's because the movie will use Mike more than Mikey, just think that's interesting.

I'm honestly expecting more Mikey than Mike in the movie, as they seem to really be playing him as the little brother.

I've seen no particular favoritism for either, though. Just depends on the mood at the time, really. Just as Don is sometimes Donnie (but not as often as Mike is Mikey).

I prefer Mike over Mikey too. Again, no big deal. But I think it makes Mike sound more "grown up" and less the baby of the family that way. For some reason calling Don, Donny doesn't have the same conotation of "non maturity" for me. It's like the 50 year old guy you still call Jimmy instead of Jim or James, just because it suits him better, kinda like the late great actor, Jimmy Doohan.
