But is it Donny, or Donnie? When they are talking to him and abbreviate his name. I'm trying to write fanfic so this is relevant. I can't seem to find any info, and I see both versions almost equally all over the net. At least it's easy with Raph, Leo and Mikey. *rolls eyes* Any offical info?

I know that Jon, but when Mikey talks to him, more often than not he uses Donny or Donnie. "Don" is more formal.

Anyway, that's why I'm asking. :)

the ie suffix has traditionally been feminine while the y usually takes the masculine

I spell it "Donny." However, I can't remember if anyone else has spelled it that way, except in the Image comics (which aren't considered official). On the official TMNT website, in his profile, it's spelled "Donny" though. But I think tons of people spell it "Donnie."

Masked Ninja

I spell it "Donny" because I have never heard of a man named Donald spelling his nickname "Donnie" ... always "Donny." Well, most often it's just "Don," but I understand you want a more familiar Mikey-type nickname. At any rate, I assume it would be spelled the way I've seen most fellow humans do it. ;)

And I agree that the "ie" suffix has feminine connotations for me. So I've never spelled it that way.

Though almost every Donatello fangirl I've seen spells it "Donnie." It does look more cutesy that way, I suppose...

Dan Berger spells it "Donny." And Michelangelo ;) spelled it "Donny" in one of his recent ninjaturtles.com letters.

Where is it in canon? I haven't read many of the comics yet, though I aim to fix that. Is it in Volume 1 or 2 or perhaps Tales? I'm assuming it isn't 4 since she's married by then.

Jo Dawn

Well... hm. It's just supposed to have been in there, even if it's not blatently obvious. I know for SURE it's in the 2K3 series... I talked to the guys at the official site a few times... Don's always supposed to have had a crush on her. In the cartoon, however, it's played down a bit.

Really, not to get off topic, I think it's something they really should have explored a tad more. Though it's quite obvious the disdain between Casey and Don sometimes. Casey's even made some comments, hah.

Um... But... back to your regularly scheduled thread.

FWIW, I also think "Donnie" looks better for some reason.

Not to derail, but always as in Vol 1, or always as in what the 2K3 series is based on? My access to the comics has been sketchy, but I've never noticed that.

Well, as per the Mirage comics, I can't much say as I haven't read in a loooong time, lol. I may have worded it badly, but I'll do research. Maybe someone can help (or correct me, if the case should be) on this.

And, ok, fine. They should have gone way, way further with it in the cartoon... Such character-building! All for naught.

I thought it'd have such possibilities, even past any romantic things... Just... character growth and all that.

Upon further research:

Mirage: Don...didn't see any Donnie/y, but then again I only have 4 Mirage issues, 2 "City at War" books, Flaming Carrot crossover part 2 (I think) and Vol 4, ish 1 a gift from Mirage.

Archie: Didn't see any Donnie/ys either, only Don.

Dreamwave: Donnie is the spelling.

TMNT 2: "Sounds pretty persistant, says his name's Donny."

So it's un in the air. Next stop TMNT 2k3 DVDs. The OT never called them by nicknames.

You're going to have headaches if you try to include the non-canon comics: both nicknames are used at one point or another. Use Volume 1 (the issues done by the regulars), Volume 2, Volume 4, and Tales Vols. 1 and (some of?) 2.

EDIT: Just checked Collected Tales Volume 1...neither nickname is used, no Mikey either. It's all Leo, Don, Mike, and Raph. Fun fact: Leo actually refers to them as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in #7.

Also, I think someone may have mentioned this, but the official Mirage site has it as "Donny".

Well, I definitely think it shows in Volume 4, and there were a couple parts in Volume 1 (like, when Don kicked Casey's butt, and some of the convos he had with April) that may have hinted at it. I wish it was played up more in the new cartoon, too.

I love the part in "Adventures in Turtle Sitting." Well, actually a couple parts. When Casey's like, "You're totally cramping my style, bro." And then when he says, "Dude, she's my girlfriend! You can't have her!"

Oh, the subtlety.

Also, I'm not sure because there are several people on here that I'm not sure if they're guys or girls, but am I noticing a pattern? Do the guys generally call him Donny and the girls call him Donnie? I said generally, I know there are exceptions.

The -ie doesn't work for Mike cause the e is already there.

That's why I try sticking to Don or Raph when I call them by name.

Seems like the writers/creators feel the same way...they turtles are overwhelmingly referred to in the comics as Don, Raph, Mike, and Leo over the other nicknames. When the official sources do use the longer nicknames though, it seems to consistently be "Donny". Non-canon sources such as Volume 3 or guest writers from Volume 1 have used "Donnie", but they've also mistaken Donatello for the one that uses katanas, so we know their stuff isn't exactly held to the highest quality assurance by Mirage.

What does this mean? Not a thing. If you want to spell it canonically, it's Donny. If you've been spelling it Donny, pat yourself on the back. If you've been spelling it Donnie, I don't think anyone's twisting your arm to stop now (they still know who you mean).

I've been spelling it "Donnie" ever since I saw it spelled that way in the TMNT II comic book adaptation back in '92. I actually think the live-action movies were the first incarnation to use the "Donnie" nickname, possibly inspired by the New Kids on the Block member Donnie Wahlberg, who was popular at the time.

In fanfiction, I've seen the spellings "Donnie" and "Donny" used fairly interchangeably, though "Don" is apparently the nickname Donatello prefers. I personally like to think of "Donnie" as a nickname someone else (like Mikey) would give him, while he wouldn't necessarily call himself that. But I doubt it really matters too much to him one way or another. I mean, I bet he'd let April call him whatever she wants. :)
